İyi akşamlar!
turshu (host) 8:08:45 PM

TAndy 8:10:22 PM
Hey! I heard there was Anatolian rock in here, I'm all in.
turshu (host) 8:12:16 PM
tandy :) welcome in, we have cem karaca's and mogollar all lined up for ya
Matt Sabbath 8:16:39 PM
We learned about Erkin Koray from the CapDoc Ahab! Good stuff!
TAndy 8:17:33 PM
Big love to the CapDoc
turshu (host) 8:17:59 PM
erkin koray is amazing, his mesafeler album was very shifting for me
Matt Sabbath 8:18:02 PM
Always enjoy some good anatolian psychedelia
turshu (host) 8:18:04 PM
ayyy capdoc
Matt Sabbath 8:18:48 PM
Shifting. Good description. A good piece o' music will definitely shift ya.
turshu (host) 8:20:27 PM
very true, one of those albums you come back to every once in a while and find a different 'you' in
Matt Sabbath 8:21:06 PM
Edip! When I dip you dip Edip
turshu (host) 8:22:47 PM
edip with a very dip baseline
turshu (host) 8:24:45 PM
there's this documentary from 2000s I don't know if any of you saw it but it goes through all different stages of growing Turkish music from rock to underground rap, also featuring Erkin Koray
Matt Sabbath 8:25:29 PM
that sounds dope!
turshu (host) 8:25:42 PM
hah yes it's called Crossing the Bridge The Sound of Istanbul
turshu (host) 8:26:06 PM
yesss matt, I would recommend
Rob from Maryland 8:26:29 PM
We've enjoyed the show so far, but sadly, we must leave for a Zoom call with a group of friends. I may bow out of that early to come back to WPRB
Matt Sabbath 8:27:21 PM
take care Rob
turshu (host) 8:27:32 PM
bring our WPRB greetings to the friends hehe, see ya rob
Richard Mitnick 8:33:40 PM
I have been clicked in all day. Happy to have you in my digiteria. I hope you are having a great show
michael gudgeon 8:34:39 PM
TURSHUUUU!
turshu (host) 8:37:50 PM
hey Richard! happy to see ya!!
turshu (host) 8:37:55 PM
MIKEEEEE
turshu (host) 8:38:06 PM
what upp
Matt Sabbath 8:47:41 PM
Fikret is a cool name
turshu (host) 8:49:35 PM
yea, I had never thought about really but it literally means 'thought'
Matt Sabbath 8:50:02 PM
that's awesome
Matt Sabbath 8:50:37 PM
great spelling of Demokrasi !
turshu (host) 8:53:47 PM
haha yeah
turshu (host) 8:54:26 PM
acil demokrasi: demokrasi... immediately needed...
Matt Sabbath 8:56:03 PM
Ah
Richard of Rocky Hill 8:59:19 PM
@ turshu (host) Certainly enjoying tonight's show, as always!
Matt Sabbath 8:59:49 PM
the mighty Mogollar!
Matt Sabbath 9:01:23 PM
love how Turkish musicians embraced the fearsome Farfisa organ
Richard of Rocky Hill 9:08:59 PM
Yes! YES!! When I heard the opening of Ayten Alpman's "Ve Tanrı Aşkı Yarattı" I totally thought it was a Turkish language cover of Peggy Lee's 1958 pop hit "Fever"!
turshu (host) 9:12:39 PM
I wanna play so much more mogollar around here, hehe the farfisa and baglama are trademarks
Matt Sabbath 9:13:00 PM
sounds like we need a mashup of the two songs
turshu (host) 9:13:32 PM
I know Richard!! they are very similar but also have their unique vibes
turshu (host) 9:13:37 PM
I like that idea Matt
Matt Sabbath 9:14:24 PM
DJ Turshu if you wanna get really nutty, High On Fire has a straight up Turkish song https://highonfire.bandcamp.com/track/karanl-k-yol-instrumental ...which is cool for a CA stoner metal band
michael gudgeon 9:17:42 PM
oh i know that sample from something
Matt Sabbath 9:18:56 PM
on the Rana Alagoz cover it looks like the dude is a little puppet LOL
turshu (host) 9:19:07 PM
wait matt this is awesome I don't know how they thought about combining doom metal with dance-y Turkish folk like that, like who inspired that...
Matt Sabbath 9:20:09 PM
DJ, the HOF bassist is very into Turkish music and I believe he sells baglamas in the off-time
turshu (host) 9:20:17 PM
puhashhashdsah yes, they used to make strange choices for cover art in the 70s...
michael gudgeon 9:20:19 PM
action bronson samples it on his first real album drop i think that chorus like flute or /we
michael gudgeon 9:20:47 PM
off mr. wonderful ill have to look into it more thats just off top
turshu (host) 9:22:52 PM
hehehee matt I'll be keeping up with hof from now on
turshu (host) 9:23:13 PM
whaaat, wait mike which song
Matt Sabbath 9:24:42 PM
DJ, that reminds me, High On Fire also pull the Turkish move on the album's opening song, Lambsbread, it's pretty smooth too https://highonfire.bandcamp.com/track/lambsbread
Matt Sabbath 9:27:38 PM
and now for some suicidal depressive black metal from DJ Jagannath! JK! DJ Jagannath rules
turshu (host) 9:33:13 PM
I am so intrigued by this band
Matt Sabbath 9:33:45 PM
oooo I like that spelling of Orijinal from Ayla D. The one-man band Muslimgauze did a lot of wordplay with his song titles along these lines
turshu (host) 9:33:52 PM
ahhasdh sending our love to dj Jagannath & his love for John zorn
Matt Sabbath 9:34:22 PM
haaaaaaaaa!! good ol' John Zorn & good ol' DJ Jagannath
turshu (host) 9:36:09 PM
hehehee exactly
Matt Sabbath 9:39:56 PM
Ossi Muzik! We have to summon wprb's resident poet, Ossy
Rob from Maryland 9:41:57 PM
I'm back, I left the Zoom call a little early. Now for more Anatolian rock
turshu (host) 9:43:29 PM
ossy hasn't been caught often in the Uncountable Measures chat... which is sad... or does that say we are not poetic enough maybe
turshu (host) 9:43:37 PM
rob!! welcome backkk
Matt Sabbath 9:44:15 PM
Ossy is an unpredictable one, ya never know when the poetry will flow
turshu (host) 9:45:05 PM
they are an artist
Rob from Maryland 9:55:02 PM
This Nilüfer is reminding me of the 1973/74 song by Anne Marie David "Wonderful Dream". I could easily be wrong as I haven't heard the latter in decades
Rob from Maryland 9:57:54 PM
I just listened to both on YouTube, I think the tune/melody is the same
turshu (host) 9:59:04 PM
Rob you just opened a door that won't ever close, wow they are exactly the same
Rob from Maryland 10:00:00 PM
They are. I think the English version's words and certainly title are different from the original French version's title
turshu (host) 10:00:34 PM
not unexpected tho... many Turkish hits of the era had their melodies borrowed from western artists and I just pretend that they are different for my mind's sanity
Rob from Maryland 10:00:44 PM
"Tu te reconnaîtras" is the French version ("You'll recognize yourself")
turshu (host) 10:01:13 PM
ah so the original is French
Rob from Maryland 10:01:38 PM
The French original was the Eurovision winner in 1973, for Luxembourg
turshu (host) 10:10:10 PM
I see I see
Rob from Maryland 10:10:20 PM
I've noticed a few English-language songs had their melodies incorporated/appropriated into Spanish-language songs, but the lyrics/subject matters are sometimes rather different
turshu (host) 10:10:54 PM
ah wait I think the lyrics are kind of a translation too Goreceksin Kendini means "You'll recognize yourself"
Rob from Maryland 10:11:23 PM
I hope my talking about the Nilüfer song didn't bring you down
turshu (host) 10:12:42 PM
Ah Rob nooo ofc not :)
turshu (host) 10:13:12 PM
It is such a strange feeling each time to see that the songs I've only listened to Turkish renditions of exist outside of that sphere hehe
Rob from Maryland 10:16:33 PM
I can see that it would be a strange feeling
turshu (host) 10:19:02 PM
hehehe yep :)
Rob from Maryland 10:19:46 PM
It looks like the English-language version (Wonderful Dream), which Anne Marie David recorded, and was a hit in Britain, has very different lyrics from the French-language song that won the 1973 Eurovision contest
Richard of Rocky Hill 10:20:17 PM
Re: "Gel Desen Gelemem Ki (Sensiz Saadet Neymiş)" by Yaşar Güvenir ... I understand nary a word of Turkish, but I know that great sad love songs are the same the world over and speak their own readily comprehended language ...
turshu (host) 10:25:22 PM
hah! maybe Nilufer saw the British hit and took a look at the original for the lyrics, her version came out in 74 - a fast rendition
turshu (host) 10:26:18 PM
Richard, very very true - you really don't have to know Turkish to understand
Rob from Maryland 10:28:18 PM
@turshu, she probably did. I think that is kind of common, or was in the 70s
turshu (host) 10:32:51 PM
absolutely absolutely, even more contemporary stuff like the Turkish rock band Duman takes melodies from those years - I tend to forget they are not originals because of how famous the people sampling it are
TAndy 10:36:30 PM
Kinda out aimlessly driving now, coffee now in hand. Thanks for the show in advance, in case I'm not able to say so in 20 minutes!
TAndy 10:37:31 PM
It's been a lovely show, oddly felt like I'm at grandma's house even though I have no blood or cultural relations with Turkey.
Matt Sabbath 10:39:42 PM
me and TAndy hittin' Grandma's hookah
TAndy 10:40:04 PM
LOL we got into her cobweb hash stash
Matt Sabbath 10:40:40 PM
punk band name: Grandma's Hookah
Matt Sabbath 10:41:02 PM
cobweb hash stash!!
turshu (host) 10:41:36 PM
tandy you bring joy to every show
turshu (host) 10:41:50 PM
puhasdhahsd I support Grandma's Hookah
Matt Sabbath 10:45:27 PM
Grandma's Hookah went OFF! at John & Peter's the other night LOL
Rob from Maryland 10:47:07 PM
Great show, turshu, I'm sad that I couldn't catch all of it. Good night to everyone
turshu (host) 10:49:15 PM
Rob see you!! thanks for tuning in also after the zoom call hehe
Matt Sabbath 10:49:17 PM
indeed a really cool show, thank you for the curation and deep dives, DJ
turshu (host) 10:49:40 PM
thanks matt for allll the contribution, always a vibe chatting with ya
turshu (host) 10:49:59 PM
also we keep grandma's hookah alive
Alan Parsec 10:50:41 PM
Thank you turshu for the Beautiful music. Your show is one of the reasons I listen to WPRB. Have a nice night!
turshu (host) 10:51:35 PM
Alan ah that makes me so so happy :) thanks for listening and good good night!
TAndy 10:56:26 PM
MISTER WOODS
TAndy 10:56:49 PM
Looks like I got home in time for one more goodbye!
Richard of Rocky Hill 10:58:12 PM
@ turshu (host) You may have said this and I missed it, but ... "Üzüntüyü Bırak Yaşamaya Bak" ("Live Your Life, Don't Be Sad") was a big English language hit in 1968 recorded by Mary Hopkin (producer, Paul McCartney) under the title "Those Were the Days"; written by American songwriter Gene Raskin and based on a Russian song "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" (The Long Road) by Boris Fomin. The English language version was about not-quite-lost youthful idealism.
turshu (host) 10:59:12 PM
ayy tandy you did :) thanks for tuning in good night!!
Richard of Rocky Hill 10:59:19 PM
Speaking of youthful idealism ... why can't WPRB run the world? Internationalism and peace ...
turshu (host) 11:00:00 PM
Richard yes! so true forgot to mention that yes!
turshu (host) 11:00:21 PM
why can't WPRB run the world.... wprb commune?
