John from MYCHOTR is coming up on 50 years as a WPRB. I believe that anniversary is later this year?

I recently learned who the second-longest-tenured WPRB DJ was and the answer did surprise me.

I loved Kikagaku Moyo so I had to press play, Teresa.

That honour goes to Dave The Obscure, who apparently first hosted Sangeet in the mid-1980s. I didn't make my initial WPRB appearance until 1988 (basically tied with Wilbo).

Dave is such a modest dude this came up basically by accident...

So John Weingart began hosting his show in our bicentennial year '76! And still as engaged and relevant as ever.

He could confirm but I believe so.

From John's radio bio:

"I did my first show on WPRB from 6:00-9:00 AM on a Monday morning in February 1974. After turning on the station, I opened with Pete Seeger singing, "Oh, Had I A Golden Thread." My other memory of that show was that a woman called to say, "Young man, do you realize you are not in Nashville but rather in Princeton, New Jersey. I hope you will soon switch to music more consenent with this area."

"About 15 months later, I left New Jersey and, I thought, radio, but returned to both and started a 3-hour Sunday night show in February 1976 shortly after Paul Robeson died. I am so grateful that the radio gods at WPRB have let me stay and I have spent the vast majority of Sunday nights since trying to create radio that takes wonderful, interesting, sometimes funny, often political, more often reasonably obscure songs and tunes, and weaves them together to be more than the sum of their parts."

So there ya have it!

I was not. My parents would drop me off well before my show and pick me up after. My first time slot was 4-7 am ET. I'd go to Wawa, buy a newspaper and sleep most of Sunday.

I'd listen to records from like 11 pm on, or watch the slow jam R&B program The Quiet Storm do their thing before me...

DJ Tenderloin, I think my parents were extremely concerned about "the rock and roll lifestyle" based on what newspapers and TV showed them. Until they met a band from England who needed a place to stay that we housed despite their objections. That group was made up of accountants and solicitors and they all got along smashingly.

I just bought my ticket for Gogol Bordello at Union Transfer later this month. No snoozing & losing this time.

That should be FUN.

The guy who ran the band's label at the time was a former WPRB DJ and he was in a bind to find them housing.

The Dwarves crashed at a group house I lived in in Baltimore years ago. It was f'ing pandamonium for 3 solid days.

I saw Matt from the fairly famous in the scheme of things band Hum last fall for the first time in 30 years and he clearly remembered many details about my parents' home. I was like "you have stayed a lot of places, good sir." But he wasn't fudging he described their living room accurately.

Never understood Sun Ra's music. Saw him at the Bottom Line with the Arkestra in the mid 80s. Understood maybe 15 minutes of the performance. Around the same time I saw a Sun Ra doc on PBS. In that doc I recall an accomnplished musician from the band saying he didnt understand what he was playing for 5 years. So I felt like I was in good company. But I still dont understand 40 years later.

They definitely stayed / slept for an entire overnight or two. It was nice to have a live body in the back of the room.

My first concert was Men At Work with INXS opening at the Mann Music Center in 1983. My parents and my sister also went. I purchased a bootleg shirt in the parking lot that turned pink on the first wash.

In 1988 I wanted to go to a punk show at City Gardens in Trenton and my parents were (rightfully) concerned so they did their own drive to City Gardens prior. It was a very chill $0.99 Dance Night so it passed their test.

You came from a land down under. New Jersey.

So I would guess they drove me to see GBH, Dag Nasty, Verbal Abuse (not Assault) and The Accused the day before I started high school. How we coordinated how they picked me up again a few hours later without cell phones I do not know. But it worked!
