Rob from snow-crete-blanketed Maryland 🦀 3:11:43 PM
Earlier I was crying when the studio version of Straight To Hell started up and I wasn't certain if it was The Clash, or M.I.A.'s Paper Planes which I also love.

donutage 4:01:00 PM
Hello, WPRBians! I was driving around & listening to WPRB (as you do) & was elated by today's Clash Day show!
Marcus Haupt 4:01:00 PM
Mustapha Dance, the dub version, was a big club hit back in the day as was "The Magnificent Dance" which they played on WBLS (Black Liberation Sound, NYC)
Liz Bot 4:01:01 PM
Love this Rachid Taha! So good
Mats Sabbath 4:01:21 PM
Marcus excellent
Jen Redlights (host) 4:01:24 PM

Mats Sabbath 4:03:11 PM
Jen I wuz tellin Jon about This House and WuW from yer show
donutage 4:03:22 PM
I was surprised though because I have tomorrow on my calendar as Int'l Clash Day. Is this one of those "first Friday of February" deals?
Carlos Ramone 4:04:22 PM
We’re they ever the Washington bullets or did they change to the wizards after moving from Baltimore?
Marcus Haupt 4:05:12 PM
Carlos, the owner changed the name after the assassination of an Israeli politician
Carlos Ramone 4:05:14 PM
@donutage…tomorrow is national ice cream for breakfast day..indulge
Marcus Haupt 4:05:46 PM
Who was friends with the Bullets owner
donutage 4:05:57 PM
@CArlos: there's a holiday I can get behind!
Liz Bot 4:05:59 PM
Went to many punk shows that were $10 suggested cover 25+ years ago. Not so much anymore, though there are still orgs in Philly putting on suggested donation shows, like Fire Museum, Chilladelphia, Germantown Kitchen Garden, etc, and of course there’s still West Philly basement punk shows. I don’t want to live in a world where those don’t exist! But yeah, for most shows these days, including many I go to, $12 doesn’t even cover the various transaction fees!
Jen Redlights (host) 4:06:08 PM
@donutage, I think it's maybe yesterday but observed on the Friday? I followed KEXP's lead, candidly. And my show is on Fridays. ;)
Jen Redlights (host) 4:06:24 PM
@mats oh nice! Those were both so great.
donutage 4:06:41 PM
Well, KEXP invented it, so I guess they are the authorities!
Jen Redlights (host) 4:06:44 PM
Ah, what @rob said!
Mats Sabbath 4:06:45 PM
Liz Bot does the Philly Unitarian Church still welcome punk shows?
Rob from snow-crete-blanketed Maryland 🦀 4:06:59 PM
@donutage, International Clash Day is on Feb. 7 unless the 7th falls on a weekend
Mats Sabbath 4:07:45 PM
I saw Ween for $12 exactly in 1993. I agree with LB that affordability is key to punky scenes. Economic justice.
Carlos Ramone 4:07:48 PM
Love the Nutley Brass….both kids have instructions to play their Ramones CD at my going away party
donutage 4:08:10 PM
thx, Rob!
Jen Redlights (host) 4:08:15 PM
@carlos hahahahahhaaha
Jen Redlights (host) 4:08:19 PM
that is awesome
Carlos Ramone 4:08:24 PM
@Matt. ..yes to the FU shows
Rob from snow-crete-blanketed Maryland 🦀 4:08:47 PM
Woo Weddos!!!
Mats Sabbath 4:09:08 PM
most punk shows in norCal back in the day were NOTAFLOF, which was nice if times was tight
Mats Sabbath 4:10:00 PM
I've seen people pay with coins to see bands Lol
Jen Redlights (host) 4:10:40 PM
Definitely at Fugazi shows
Marcus Haupt 4:11:05 PM
CBGB All Ages Shows were like $2.50
Mats Sabbath 4:11:07 PM
Carlos that Unitarian Church had crazy stuff, like Leftover Crack! At a church! That's openmindedness!
Carlos Ramone 4:11:55 PM
Matts….daycare during the day, punks at night
Liz Bot 4:11:55 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Definitely, but R5 tickets are not as cheap as they used to be!
Mats Sabbath 4:12:49 PM
Carlos wild!
aiffrig 4:13:12 PM
what did other punk bands have to say about fugazi , poor little rich boyz
Mats Sabbath 4:13:21 PM
Liz Bot I heard about those Rush ticket prices. Lordy.
Rob from snow-crete-blanketed Maryland 🦀 4:13:46 PM
I love this Hinds cover!!!
Liz Bot 4:13:57 PM
@Mats Sabbath - First Unitarian Church shows were all ages and $10 / sliding scale back in the day - and including when R5 booked The Rotunda and 4040 Locust, which was the old UPenn Video Library
Jen Redlights (host) 4:14:08 PM
kind of perfect, Spanish gals singing about Spanish bombs
Carlos Ramone 4:14:20 PM
How big of a cut is the Rush drummer getting ?
Mats Sabbath 4:14:20 PM
think I saw Soul Asylum in their punkier days for $12. It's a magic number!
Mats Sabbath 4:14:52 PM
Liz Bot ah, gotcha
Mats Sabbath 4:16:23 PM
Rush is so wealthy they should play for free. But big bands become big machines with big payrolls.
Carlos Ramone 4:16:49 PM
@Liz. One of best shows I ever saw was at rotunda..rocket/ crypt…..international noise conspiracy and explosion
Liz Bot 4:17:13 PM
My workaround was tabling for Food Not Bombs. Sean A always let us set up a table. I remember once though Ian MacKaye grumbled that he didn’t want anything merch sold at his shows, when all we had weresuggested donation pins and FNB patches and shirts, 100% of it being donations for Food Not Bombs operation, and then he was selling merch on stage after the show, so whatever!
Liz Bot 4:18:43 PM
@Carlos Ramone - I love The Rotunda. Fire Museum / Steven Tobin books a lot of the shows there. Gina Renzi has kept that place operational for over 25 years running on spit and tears! Penn gives her a pittance to keep it running. She is awesome.
Mats Sabbath 4:21:01 PM
Jen THAT'S PEP
Liz Bot 4:21:38 PM
My favorite The Fall show was at the First Unitarian Church. Predictably, Mark freaked out at the rest of the band and ended the show early. I went with my friend after to see her boyfriend, who was tending bar at a dive on Spring Garden St. The place was empty, save The Fall, all of them drinking at one table except for Mark, who was off by himself at a different table across the room! We ended up drinking with the rest of the band for the rest of the night!
Mats Sabbath 4:22:44 PM
Liz Bot LOLOLOL!
Andrea Pier 4:23:25 PM
Asbury Park, New Jersey was the first place that the clash ever played in the United States
Jen Redlights (host) 4:23:37 PM
@andrea !!!
aiffrig 4:23:53 PM
dive bars are the best
Mats Sabbath 4:23:55 PM
Jen Pierre Poutine! You got this.

Mats Sabbath 4:24:41 PM

Mats Sabbath 4:26:18 PM
Andrea P, Paramus was first place the mighty Black Sabbath played in the US! NJ has it going on.
Jen Redlights (host) 4:27:17 PM
@carlos hahaha pretty sure I don't have anything from that one, actually
Rob from snow-crete-blanketed Maryland 🦀 4:27:33 PM
@Carlos, I think once KEXP played something from Cut The Cr*P on International Clash Day. Once.
Liz Bot 4:27:51 PM
Just read that Rachid Taha’s parents immigrated from Algiers to Lyon for work. Visited Lyon last August - It’s got an impressive punk scene and long history of Labor Rights activism. Big industrial town for textiles especially
Jen Redlights (host) 4:28:20 PM
@liz bot wow, right on! sets that in more context - thanks for sharing!
Rob from snow-crete-blanketed Maryland 🦀 4:29:54 PM
I found out a few years ago that there really was a Janie Jones https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janie_Jones#The_Clash. I think KEXP played the song mentioned at the link and if so that's how I found out. I always thought that she was fictional
Mats Sabbath 4:30:21 PM
Liz Bot nice!
Liz Bot 4:30:29 PM
@Jen Redlights - Very cool city. I want to go back. Band leader and activist Catherine Ribeiro, of whom I’m a huge fan, was from Lyon. Did a tribute to her on PRB when she died a couple years ago.
Carlos Ramone 4:30:46 PM
@Rob…never heard KEXP before but downloaded their app…will be straying after this show…Muchas gracias
Jen Redlights (host) 4:31:10 PM
And this is one more reason why Liz Bot's show is required listening.
Mats Sabbath 4:31:29 PM
some great doom coming outta France lately: WuW; Hadewijch
John Coffey 4:31:39 PM
@Carlos I still think This Is England from Cut the Crap is a great Clash song.
Rob from snow-crete-blanketed Maryland 🦀 4:32:00 PM

John Coffey 4:33:46 PM
@Carlos Reserve the rest of the knight and check out the live performances on KEXP on Youtube.
Liz Bot 4:33:47 PM
@Jen Redlights - It’s quite literally the end of The Silk Road. Silk were the big industry there. The Jacquard loom was invented in Lyon! My sister-in-law married a French guy whose mom grew up in Algeria. Learned a bunch about that war from her while visiting this summer.
Jen Redlights (host) 4:34:21 PM
wild stuff!! I love learning history like that - thanks!
Mats Sabbath 4:34:25 PM
Rob you fell into wprb's Megaton orbit, as Sleaford Mods say
Mats Sabbath 4:35:44 PM
Liz Bot, Jacques Derrida was one of those algerian french. Interesting subpop.
Rob from snow-crete-blanketed Maryland 🦀 4:35:46 PM
@Carlos, I second John Coffey. The live performances on Youtube were what sucked me into KEXP over a decade ago
Jen Redlights (host) 4:36:36 PM
@john coffey may I put up the Clash photo you sent me last year?
Rob from snow-crete-blanketed Maryland 🦀 4:36:40 PM

Jen Redlights (host) 4:52:53 PM
