Ralph Towner was born in 1940 in Chehalis Washington into a musical family. His mother was a piano teacher and his father was a trumpet player. He began his career a a conservatory-trained classical pianist, attending the University of Oregon from 1958-1963. He also studied classical guitar at the Vienna Academy of Music. He joined Paul Winter's "Consort" ensemble in the late 1960's, Members of that group left in 1970 to form "Oregon". He recorded mostly for ECM. | |
