Good morning, Dave and Richard. Thanks in advance for the show this morning, I always appreciate having Sangeet to help calm my thoughts before sleeping.
TAndy 9:27:59 AM
Thoughts such as: coffee before work, or after clocking in? The answer will come in 12 hours from now :)
Sangeet Team (host) 9:28:19 AM
Welcome. This dhrupad ought to lull you right to sleep, TAndy
TAndy 9:31:03 AM
Much appreciated, Dave. The sitar is always the correct answer
Sangeet Team (host) 9:31:33 AM
this is rudra vine, similar to sitar
TAndy 9:35:09 AM
Aside from the physical differences, what are the musical/tonal differences? My untrained ear has yet to discern them apart.
TAndy 9:35:19 AM
(My trained ear is busy today)
Sangeet Team (host) 9:38:54 AM
the rudra vina, like the surbahar, is larger and tuned lower, sort of the bass version.
TAndy 9:50:59 AM
Bass versions of other instruments💙
TAndy 9:51:09 AM
Thanks, Dave. Have a good one :)

Saket is another name for Ayodhya from where King Rama is believed to have ruled. Saketharaman is singing right now on "Saketharaman" or "Lord of Saketa, Lord Rama"
Karen Swaine 10:02:18 AM
good morning. I thought it was a surbahar - but h said - no it's a rudra vina... he was looking at the screen. I love low register musical instruments - any genre.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:03:18 AM
good morning, Karen S.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:06:21 AM
rudra vina and surbahar sound similar. Surbahar has the raised frets like sitar, to accommodate the sympathetic strings running underneath
Karen Swaine 10:15:34 AM
ok just googles to see rudra vina comp to others.. and only 4 strings. what a sound. probaby already posted that I first heard subbahar at a performance by imrat Khan and one of his sons in A'dam in the 70s. At a second performance a few yrs later I managed to get a copy (cassette tape) of a live performance of him with both his sons. still have my cassette tapes but not easy to listen to them lol.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:19:16 AM
Yes, 4 main playing strings. But also the 4 "chikari" strings, unfretted, for the occasional flash of sound. Just like sitar.
