Matt Sabbath 9:11:01 AM
we got ice unda da snow
Sangeet Team (host) 9:11:33 AM
the slipperiest
Hibernal Roffle 9:15:04 AM
I can only imagine, and I am speculating for whatever reason, but I imagine Indian music underwent a bit of a sea change with British Colonization that has a rather apparent demarcation. Just extrapolating, and I probably could not tell the difference, but for someone who has the ears for it, I guess it's obvious.
Matt Sabbath 9:16:09 AM
good point HR
Sangeet Team (host) 9:16:47 AM
For sure. The violin, for example, has become an almost essential element of Carnatic music. And the harmonium almost completely replaced the sarangi in Hindustani music.
Hibernal Roffle 9:18:45 AM
Ah yes! The instruments! Perfect, that joins it up nicely thank you.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:18:54 AM
But the classical music itself has not really incorporated much of the western styles. Bollywood, however, fully absorbed western musical structures
Sangeet Team (host) 9:20:00 AM
Note that "harmony" is alien to Indian classical music. They do not have "chords" as such.
Hibernal Roffle 9:21:10 AM
With all those semitones! lol Good luck with chords.
Matt Sabbath 9:22:01 AM
HR I just get the root drone ID'd and improvise around scales and intuition.
Matt Sabbath 9:22:48 AM
Carnatic music is "nonEuclidian" in a musical sense.
Hibernal Roffle 9:24:55 AM
Yeah, best I can hope for is to run the vibe and hope I land some notes. Which is fun when no one is watching.
Matt Sabbath 9:25:36 AM
HR exactly. I get doom fuzz going along wit the root drone.
Matt Sabbath 9:27:05 AM
(when inspired by the ganj and cawfee and mood)
Hibernal Roffle 9:27:49 AM
Fuzzy drone be good. I that would sure help with the overtones.
Matt Sabbath 9:29:28 AM
nice buttery tones
Hibernal Roffle 9:30:31 AM
A synth with a nice envelope filter is boss.
Matt Sabbath 9:31:02 AM
now we're tawkin HR
Hibernal Roffle 9:34:05 AM
But a sitar is so primal. I've always loved the sound. It just exudes exotic.
Hibernal Roffle 9:42:53 AM
Speaking of primal, this show has been on for as long as I've been listening to WPRB. This music has been around for a thousand years or so and ain't goin' anywhere. lol

Sangeet Team (host) 10:03:55 AM
🎻 🎹
Sangeet Team (host) 10:04:37 AM
you'll note that even though harmonium has the capacity for chords - they aren't played in Indian classical music
Hibernal Roffle 10:05:46 AM
I knew a lot of Polish kids who took accordion lessons, and this is taking me back. :)
Sangeet Team (host) 10:06:56 AM
🪗 very similar instruments
Hibernal Roffle 10:07:20 AM
Oh, so they don't so much mix and match in a traditional setting?
Sangeet Team (host) 10:08:48 AM
accordions are more complex than necessary for Indian classical

Yeah, those 5th buttons.

Hibernal Roffle 10:27:30 AM

Hibernal Roffle 10:28:16 AM
I would fucking go there. lol
Hibernal Roffle 10:32:04 AM
If those were the options, sure... arg
Hibernal Roffle 10:36:38 AM
Is there an "earliest" example of Indian music? I don't know what the framework is to determine that, but I love when Marvin goes serious old school, be it monks or whatever, so I assume there is an equivalent.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:37:23 AM
Yes, the Sanskrit chanting is an equivalent.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:38:31 AM
Vedic chanting dates to about 800 BC, and used 4 tones
Hibernal Roffle 10:38:38 AM
Like from the Vedas, as in prayers?

Hello! Thank you for the music this morning.. we appreciate hearing lots of the instrumental cuts! Have a splendid holiday season everyone!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:29:02 AM
Thanks, Karen. Good to have you in the chat
Karen Swaine 11:33:43 AM
Harvey and I esp love hearing the saxophone. the accordion was a bit strange.. but I think it sounded like a harmonium. oh my.. now i'm going to get all nostalgic & weepy...we saw Banerjee play at Columbia U theater way back in the 80s! it was glorious!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:35:06 AM
@Karen, that was harmonium. I have never heard ICM on accordion
Karen Swaine 11:35:29 AM
oh hahaha... fooled me!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:35:37 AM
I sadly never got the chance to see Nikhil Banerjee perform live.
Karen Swaine 11:42:25 AM
I often regret having missed opportunities to see artists performing... thank heavens for radio, videos, YouTube, LPs, CDs and yes, even cassette tapes, lol. Have got rid of every tape deck we ever had as they stopped working one after another, including 2 different Nakamichi players.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:43:40 AM
I have a cheap but rugged Kenwood. But I rarely bother to put cassettes on
Sangeet Team (host) 11:49:11 AM
I guess the cassette player will last longer if you never use it...
Karen Swaine 11:52:34 AM
oh actually I still have my mother's Sony ghetto blaster, haha. I know there are probably businesses that will put the contents of a cassette tape onto a (?) CD - and I have some tapes that were recorded surreptitiously (?) from live performances, and some great stuff taped from radio. also family recordings of folks talking & singing - little treasures. that are worth saving. might actually investigate it.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:54:41 AM
I have a couple commercial CDs that were made from inferior tape masters, and they sound awful. The tambura drone has a sine-wave fluctuation
