Welcome to Monday Jazz!
Patrick White (1) 12:05:58 PM
Greetings to Dan and his listeners . Thanks for playing my request. Richie Kamuca Pride of Mastbaum High
Patrick White (1) 12:06:14 PM
Along with Lee Morgan of course
Patrick White (1) 12:11:51 PM
A Happy Birthday to PRB institution John Weingart. One of the few PRB DJS who refers to Dan as young Buskirk
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:12:25 PM
Hey Patrick! Kamuca backatcha!
Marcus Watt 12:13:58 PM
Hi, Dan, Patrick. I remember Muse Records. Sadly I had to return a few bad pressings to Jerry. Never a problem with Jerry, of course. Pat Martino records.
Patrick White (1) 12:15:29 PM
Greetings Marcus. Good thing you didn’t have to return any Morris Levy related recordings
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:15:34 PM
Hey Mark! They've been reissuing all the obvious blue Note stuff for years, glad they've finally got around to unearthing all those gems on Muse! We've got Roy Brooks, Carlos Garnett adn Kenny Barron in the wings. Beatiful pressings too!
Richard Mitnick 12:17:31 PM
Good day, Dan
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:18:38 PM
Hey Richard!
Marcus Watt 12:30:09 PM
Sad that all big time rock shows are scheduled 8 or 9 months in advance. I remember a time (1971) when Larry Magid said we have an opening at the Spectrum in three weeks. Who's available. Turns out it was Black Sabbath, J. Geils and King Crimson. Still have the stub. $5.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:32:59 PM
Love the part in the FILLMORE doc where Bill Graham says every band the signed on to play the Fillmore's closing had some stipulations, except the Dead who just asked the date and time.....
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:33:17 PM
Request for Marcus!
Richard Mitnick 12:41:05 PM
I am back to WPRB after a long absence. I am sad to see the Jazz programming at WPRB has been reduced from four editions to just two. I especially miss Will Constantine JR and his alter ego Rico Calamari.
Marcus Watt 12:42:00 PM
Stevie really killed it in the '70's. Sadly I've lost the seven inch that came with Songs....
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:42:26 PM
I'm standing firm, as Willie said, "After taking several readings, I'm surprised to find my mind still fairly sound".......
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:43:20 PM
Marcus, you didn't say that was going to be a sad story....😢
Marcus Watt 12:55:25 PM
I bought a tshirt with an image of Abdullah Ibrahim. Dan was the only person I know who recognized him. I need better friends.
Patrick White (1) 12:58:17 PM
Dan I read a CCR book and it said Bill Graham loved them because they showed up sober , on time , did their show and left. He gave them huge bonuses. John always refused encores..
Patrick White (1) 12:59:29 PM
I grew up during that era but have no memory of Charlie Brown pumpkin special. Always uplifting to hear Vince
Marcus Watt 1:03:29 PM
Only time I went to the Village Vanguard, I saw Stanley Cowell and Larry Coryell.
Richard Mitnick 1:05:54 PM
Recommending for your consideration the Bad Plus Trio with Ethan Iverson, the best left hand in Jazz. Ethan is no longer with the trio which has become a quartet without Ethan and it is just not the same. Please consider future airing of the original trio.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:08:44 PM
Ethan Iverson was caught in a bit of an ugly jazz scandal a couple years back, perhaps the definition of a tempest in a teapot....
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:16:04 PM
Sara Serpa and Matt Mitchell on the way....
Richard Mitnick 1:29:18 PM
I do not know of the scandal, but the same way Wagner is played is spite of the Nazi mess, the music of the trio is still worth it.
Marcus Watt 1:30:17 PM
Unlike you, I've met very few great talents in my life. But I briefly met Dave Burrell. Could not be a nicer man.
Russell Woessner 1:31:51 PM
Sara Serpa and Matt Mitchell are performing at Solar Myth in Philly on December 4: https://www.arsnovaworkshop.org/programs/matt-mitchell-sara-serpa/
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:35:41 PM
Thanks Russell! glad to know you're out there!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:36:56 PM
Had a memorable day 20 years ago or so, driving Dave Burrell up to Princeton for an interview. I rememeber he told me he had a property in Sweden (where his wife was from) that he could escape to if things in the U.S. got too hot!
Marcus Watt 1:44:46 PM
Easily the best pianist I've ever seen.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:44:51 PM
RIP Klaus Doldinger, composer of the DAS BOOT soundtrack....
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:23:25 PM
Rest in Space Ace...
Marcus Watt 2:29:39 PM
I forgot about U.S. Maple, so thanks.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:30:11 PM
Yeah, aco-worker used to play 'em all the time at the record store, i slowly fell..
Marcus Watt 2:33:58 PM
What's an aco-worker? Sorry, cheap shot.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:34:28 PM
I predicted your confusion...
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:36:45 PM
Surprise ending!
