4th studio album; The song seems to reference Bowie's half-brother Terry Burns, who suffered from schizophrenia. Bowie himself confirmed this in an interview in 1977, saying it was "very much based on myself and my brother" and in 2000 he elaborated that it was "another vaguely anecdotal piece about my feelings about myself and my brother, or my other doppelganger. I was never quite sure what real position Terry had in my life, whether Terry was a real person or whether I was actually referencing another part of me, and I think 'Bewlay Brothers' was really about that."

Hello Hello!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:06:41 PM
Hello Lizbot and future chatters
Lizbot (host) 5:07:13 PM
Hello Rob from Maryland 🦀! How's Crabland?
Fran Blanche 5:07:50 PM
Interesting how Flowers became Icehouse...
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:09:20 PM
Crabland was rainy earlier today, Lizbot. How is Jersey?
Lizbot (host) 5:09:51 PM
Hi Fran Blanche! yes! I first played them on a themed Doubleplusgood episode where I was looking for flower-related songs!
Lizbot (host) 5:10:45 PM
@Fran Blanche - Unsurprisingly, there were already other bands named "Flowers" before them!
Lizbot (host) 5:11:05 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - It's dank here in Philly/Jersey. I
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:11:34 PM
@Lizbot, that Family Fodder song had me thinking that it was Stereo Total
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:11:48 PM
@Lizbot, bummer to hear about the dankness
Lizbot (host) 5:12:45 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - I was so tired last night, I blamed the rain for making me so sleepy, I missed the Stereolab show I was really looking forward to at Union Transfer! I think that was the first time I've missed them when they've come to Philly since the mid-90s!
Lizbot (host) 5:13:31 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Hrmmm, maybe some overlap in that Family Fodder "Love Song" with Stereolab, but more like Stereo Total!
Lizbot (host) 5:14:24 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Unfortunately, even more tired today! Worried I'm fighting off a cold, hopefully successfully!
Fran Blanche 5:15:20 PM
Oh, now there's a theme - Bands that were forced to change their name! The London Suede... Charlatans UK... Green Jelly... Flowers... etc.
Lizbot (host) 5:16:50 PM
@Fran Blanche - Good idea! Manitoba turned to Caribou
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:29:17 PM
@Lizbot and other bird types: there has been a Red Phalarope in the small pool to the west of the Capitol in DC. It's the 5th ever for DC, it's pretty rare away from the Atlantic Ocean in Maryland (and New Jersey), and it is so absurdly tame/not bothered by people that you can (as I did) get really really close to it: https://ebird.org/checklist/S275378037
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:30:21 PM
It's a small sandpiper that swims even tho it doesn't have webbed feet (and as always, not my photo)
Lizbot (host) 5:31:28 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Nice photos! Is that a male? or female of non-breeding plumage?
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:38:15 PM
@Lizbot, it's a bird that hatched this year, so in juvenile/immature plumage. I don't think that males and females can be distinguished outside of the breeding season. In breeding plumage the female is stunning https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Red_Phalarope/id
Lizbot (host) 5:39:01 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - oooh, very pretty red rust color!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:56:33 PM
Songs called Mosquitoes and Diatoms ... :-))
Lizbot (host) 5:57:42 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - It's the stagnant pond segment of the program!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:58:05 PM
That's bog standard!
Lizbot (host) 5:59:32 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - My Irish is showing! Just watch out for the peat moss segment of the program!
Lizbot (host) 6:00:43 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - A pond field recording behind my voice in that live station ID just a moment ago
Lizbot (host) 6:01:11 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Now I'm thinking about what a peat bog themed program would sound like...
Lizbot (host) 6:05:12 PM
I'm a peat seeker with Pete Seeger and his "My Dirty Old Stream"!
Bud Burroughs 6:08:11 PM
Hello, Lizbot - so many great tunes tonight!

addie 🐍🐍🐍 plum 6:16:35 PM
Hello all! Taking a break from packing to join the chat!
Lizbot (host) 6:17:48 PM
@𓀠 ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 𓀡 / @George Korein - Did you hear about how apparently someone sent that Zs album I just played from to the Howard Stern show when it was released in 2007 and he played it and made fun of it on air!
Lizbot (host) 6:17:58 PM
Hello addie 🐍🐍🐍 plum!
George Korein 6:18:09 PM
Shalashay away!
Lizbot (host) 6:18:41 PM
@addie 🐍🐍🐍 plum - I hope you'll be done soon! Sounds rough! Reward yrself with some Evergreen frozen custard when you make it to the tristate area!
𓀠 ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 𓀡 6:18:41 PM
@Lizbot, that sounds about right
addie 🐍🐍🐍 plum 6:18:51 PM
I’ll be listening from Philly next time you’re on the air, Lizbot!
Lizbot (host) 6:19:13 PM
@George Korein - Sashay away; Shalash, you stay!
Lizbot (host) 6:19:41 PM
@𓀠 ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 𓀡 - I'm sure Zs was thrilled! It would have only increased their visibility!
Lizbot (host) 6:19:58 PM
@George Korein - This song is serving triumph
addie 🐍🐍🐍 plum 6:20:23 PM
Oh man, my list of local food and treats I need to have again ASAP grows ever longer!
George Korein 6:21:10 PM
Hm if I heard that story I forgot it. Reminds me of Jimmy Fallon ragging on some free jazz by I think Peter Brotzmann
Lizbot (host) 6:22:16 PM
@addie 🐍🐍🐍 plum - Oh wow! Not to derail that plan, but this coming Monday I'll be subbing for DJ Mackerel from 3-5 pm! Don't know if you'll be here yet, but regular Doubleplusgood will return on Thursday, October 9th, so it's still technically true that the next time you listen to this program you'll be in Philly!
addie 🐍🐍🐍 plum 6:22:16 PM
It’s a toss up right now for breakfast the day after the move: Famous 4th Street, or Honey’s Sit ‘n Eat?
Lizbot (host) 6:23:06 PM
@George Korein - haha, really? Did Fallon do that on his show? If so, I'm sure Brotzmann got a crapton of streams after that!
Lizbot (host) 6:23:36 PM
@addie 🐍🐍🐍 plum - I'd always pick Honey’s Sit ‘n Eat!
addie 🐍🐍🐍 plum 6:23:45 PM
We will still be loading the truck on Monday, alas!
Lizbot (host) 6:24:31 PM
@addie 🐍🐍🐍 plum - Music to load trucks to?
Lizbot (host) 6:24:58 PM
@addie 🐍🐍🐍 plum - I can't say no to Honey's brisket! The trick is getting there before it runs out, though

Lizbot (host) 6:35:36 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - I love a good pond recording!
Lizbot (host) 6:37:01 PM
I just realized that the way Bowie sings in "Bewlay Brothers" is like a guideline for the sound of 90s Brit-pop band Suede/The London Suede/Brett Anderson's vocal style
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:37:19 PM

addie 🐍🐍🐍 plum 6:37:23 PM
I’m more of a breakfast person at honeys, though they used to have an incredible seitan Reuben that they were always sold out of.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:37:58 PM
@Lizbot, we can see that about Bewlay Brothers
Lizbot (host) 6:45:49 PM
@addie 🐍🐍🐍 plum - mmm, god, I love the seitan there. I'm not even a vegetarian any more after 20 years of being one, but I still love their seitan.
George Korein 6:46:34 PM
Scrabbling hard
Lizbot (host) 6:47:27 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Yeah, re: Bewlay, just something that occurred to me today while playing it on air after hearing it many times. But then I was inspired to look up what Bowie was going for with the lyrics, though at first in the first 6 years after Hunky Dory's release, he was evasive about the meaning
michael gudgeon 6:47:47 PM
@lizbot friend got me on to them a couple years ago, and i did their discography a couple times so always love hearin em pop up now!
Lizbot (host) 6:48:36 PM
@George Korein - scrambling to scrabble the lock of The Scrambler cuz I'm a boardwalk rambler
Lizbot (host) 6:50:17 PM
@Michael gudgeon - Black Moth Super Rainbow? Yeah, I find their instrumental stuff always works well as a nice interlude and I like their vocal stuff as well!

Trumpeting the jawn
Lizbot (host) 6:55:42 PM
@George Korein - It sounds at one point like he says "Trying to get over like a gopher," which makes me think of this song as a soundtrack to Nuala's face-offs with the groundhogs who live under the porch
michael gudgeon 6:55:49 PM
@lizbot yes! i had the intentions of doing bmsr then tobacco, but never got too far in and just redid bmsr, intend to do someday though

@Christopher thacher - After all, most non-car-radio WPRB listening I do is in the kitchen
christopher thacher 7:04:55 PM
Most of mine is done while working. But this show is among the must listen variety.
christopher thacher 7:05:20 PM
