Bonjour! Bienvenue dans un autre spectacle entièrement français !

Lizbot (host) 5:02:02 PM
Hi Number 6!
Number 6 5:03:15 PM
@Lizbot- You've got mail!
Lizbot (host) 5:03:23 PM
Bonjour michael gudgeon!
Jen Redlights 5:03:51 PM
"Fran Prix" already made my afternoon.
Lizbot (host) 5:04:26 PM
Bonjour Jen Redlights! haha, I'm glad you appreciate it!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:04:27 PM
Hi Lizbot and everyone! Stepping out to get a hot food bar dinner, will be back soon
Lizbot (host) 5:04:43 PM
Bonjour, Rob from Maryland 🦀!
Lizbot (host) 5:04:53 PM
@Number 6 - OOoh, merci!
Space Cowboy 5:04:55 PM
This is really good
Lizbot (host) 5:05:31 PM
Bonjour Space Cowboy! Moi aussi j'aime ça !
Lizbot (host) 5:06:02 PM
[Heavily relying on Google Translate!]
Lizbot (host) 5:06:47 PM
@Space Cowboy - I first heard that Nicolas Godin "Orca" track in a documentary about volcanoes narrated by Miranda July called "Fire of Love"!
Jen Redlights 5:07:27 PM
soirée dansante française!
Lizbot (host) 5:07:34 PM
@Space Cowboy - (which is a doc I recommend, by the way!)
Number 6 5:07:40 PM
When it lites up some kind of liquid and sparkles inside. The plug in back turns to adjust the position.
Lizbot (host) 5:08:39 PM
@Jen Redlights - Oui! Tout le monde danse !
Number 6 5:08:53 PM
* The liquid starts boiling when it is on.
Marcus Haupt 5:09:06 PM
Hello y’all!
Lizbot (host) 5:10:26 PM
@Number 6 - Nice bord! I think it sort of doubles as a Xmas decoration too!
Number 6 5:12:08 PM
Probably, I got it for a song.
Lizbot (host) 5:14:08 PM
Bonjour Marcus Haupt!
Lizbot (host) 5:15:50 PM
@Number 6 - The light have liquid that heats up and causes the sparkles to move really reminds me of some old 40s/50s tree lights my grandmom had that were similarly filled with liquid
Number 6 5:17:42 PM
Sort of like those bubble lights, I still have some.
John Coffey 5:18:15 PM
Welcome back Liz, glad you're doing Part Deux! I missed last weeks show.
Marcus Haupt 5:18:33 PM
Lisbot, did you also iron your tin foil do you could use it next year?
Lizbot (host) 5:19:02 PM
Bonjour John Coffey!
Lizbot (host) 5:19:24 PM
@John Coffey - I'm glad you can tune in this week!
Lizbot (host) 5:21:11 PM
@Marcus Haupt - ha, I had one of those rotating electric 50s floor lights that points up at the tree and uses a bulb with three cellophane wedges forming a circle that rotates in front of the bulb...Just SO many options for starting fires in mid-century xmas tree decor!
Number 6 5:30:12 PM
A lot of things didn't have fuses back then, and exposed 120 v all over the place.
Marcus Haupt 5:30:57 PM
Hardcore Germans put actual flaming candles on the tree
Lizbot (host) 5:32:16 PM
@Number 6 - Yeah, if I am to believe "A Christmas Story," Christmas trees were just tangles of exposed ungrounded wiring and overloaded outlets with dry flammable needles everywhere!
Lizbot (host) 5:32:50 PM
@Marcus Haupt - I both admire and fear that German tradition.
G Jax 5:32:51 PM
Dug The Beach Boys sample on the last one
Lizbot (host) 5:33:04 PM
Bonjour G Jax!
Lizbot (host) 5:34:16 PM
@Marcus Haupt - I have family in and around Stuttgart and Hamburg, and they are pretty dedicated to their handmade straw tree ornaments, extra flammable! Also little guys made of prune with faces, for extra mouse visitors
G Jax 5:34:35 PM
Bonjour Liz
Marcus Haupt 5:39:05 PM
Lizbot I have relatives in Hamburg too! Das it gut!
G Jax 5:39:11 PM
Had a good friend named Marcus (RIP) whose family was from Stuttgart. All somebodies over there. Half brother was a soccer star and half sister some kind if dance pop star
G Jax 5:40:12 PM
His dad was a singer too. Knew Elvis
Marcus Haupt 5:42:07 PM
Stuttgart is a great city.
Marcus Haupt 5:43:42 PM
This song was a #1 in the U.S.
Lizbot (host) 5:44:05 PM
@Marcus Haupt - Oh wow! Yeah, most of my German family (my mom's side) is in an around Stuttgart in the south, but my cousin Mathias moved to Hamburg to work for AirBus, which has their German headquarters there. Hamburg was soooo windy, esp. down on the waterfront!
Marcus Haupt 5:44:56 PM
Lizbot did you check out the grosse Freiheit or the Reperbahn? Used to be where the punks hung out
Number 6 5:45:30 PM
The instrumental version of Love Is Blue was very popular back in the day.
Jen Redlights 5:46:22 PM
I have to step away from the chat, but the Fran Prix has been amazing - thanks, Lizbot!
Lizbot (host) 5:46:59 PM
@G Jax - I spent a large portion of my visit to Germany in 2024 in a cottage in Grunbach, a few S bahn stops outside of Stuttgart. My aunt lives in Korb, also near there.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:47:17 PM
@Number 6, it sure was! Paul Mauriat

SV In Like Flynn 5:47:33 PM
Claudine Longet, a name that definitely deserves a Google or Wiki search.
Lizbot (host) 5:48:20 PM
@Marcus Haupt / @G Jax - My trip to visit relatives in Germany last summer happened to coincide with the European Cup Finals, being hosted by Germany for the first time in I think 20 years?, and I had no idea until I arrived there and found international soccer fans EVERYWHERE!
Lizbot (host) 5:48:29 PM
Bonjour SV In Like Flynn!
Lizbot (host) 5:49:41 PM
@SV In Like Flynn - Oh yeah, I know about the whole sordid business with her and Spider Sabich! Crazy story!
John Coffey 5:49:48 PM
Opps, Wrong sign in again Mr Flynn.
G Jax 5:50:17 PM
Never been. But my wife was in Germany at Christmastime late 80's. I don't remember what townbut she says it was magical.
Lizbot (host) 5:50:18 PM
@Jen Redlights - THanks for stopping by and listening, Jen!
John Coffey 5:51:03 PM
Old memories of watching Andy Williams on TV and seeing Claudine.
Lizbot (host) 5:51:04 PM
@Number 6 - Yeah, I've heard a few good versions of Love Is Blue, but I love the Claudine Longet one the most, despite her crazy past!
Lizbot (host) 5:52:25 PM
@Marcus Haupt - Stuttgart is also the birthplace of Friedrich Schiller, who wrote "Ode to Joy"! There's a big statue of him in the center platz
Ted 5:52:57 PM
Pas de Sparks ce soir?
Lizbot (host) 5:53:34 PM
@John Coffey - I know they were a celebrity couple, but I don't think I've seen much footage of them performing together. I'm sure I can find a ton of it on YouTube
HTID11 5:54:28 PM
Love is blue is scarred into my brain like a bad trip... Late 90s... "Millennium" ... "Lucy Butler" ... Anyone else?
Lizbot (host) 5:54:51 PM
@G Jax - I've always wanted to go to Germany's many Weihnachtsmarkts during Christmastime, but it's so hard to fit in a trip over the winter holidays. My mom has been at Christmastime many times, though
Lizbot (host) 5:55:00 PM
Bonjour HTID11!
HTID11 5:55:54 PM
Salutations!!
Lizbot (host) 5:56:10 PM
@HTID11 - Was that from the TV show "Millennium"? Never saw it, but vaguely recall its existence!
Lizbot (host) 5:56:43 PM
Bonjour Ted!
HTID11 5:57:44 PM
Yes indeed, Chris Carter's next show during/after x-files..
HTID11 5:58:14 PM
I swear that song plays throughout an entire episode
Lizbot (host) 5:58:17 PM
@Ted - Non, Pas ce soir!
Lizbot (host) 5:59:15 PM
@Ted - I expected I might see you or Christine at Sparks this past Monday night at The Keswick, but if you were there, I didn't spot you! I DID run into WPRB's Pethie, as well as a handful of other listeners
HTID11 6:00:19 PM
Thanks for knowing @lizbot, even if only kinda sorta...
Lizbot (host) 6:00:55 PM
@HTID11 - All I know is they named a character after Black Francis from the Pixies in that show!
Lizbot (host) 6:01:48 PM
@HTID11 - That aired during a period in college when I didn't own a TV! So the late 90s is pretty much a black hole for me WRT TV!
ResidentFrenchie 6:01:57 PM
Bonsoir Lizbot! C'est magnifique, Franprix Grand Prix: Part Deux! How was your time en France? Did you make it all around the country?
HTID11 6:02:18 PM
Oh wow! I did not know that... Definitely checks out though, main character was named Frank Black.
Lizbot (host) 6:02:51 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - ha, I should dig up something from Le Grand Orchestre de Paul Mauriat, but I probably won't be getting it in this week!
Space Cowboy 6:04:33 PM
Good no that's what I'm talking about
Space Cowboy 6:04:49 PM
Yes!
Lizbot (host) 6:06:41 PM
@Marcus Haupt - DIdn't see yr question before re: grosse Freiheit or the Reperbahn, I think I was on mic then, but we basically hung with our my cousin and his two little kids the whole time we were in Hamburg, so not a lot of exploring the Reeperbahn, but we DID see a LOT of drunken bachelor and bachelorette parties. I never realized before that trip that Hamburg is a major destination for those!
Lizbot (host) 6:07:00 PM
Bonjour ResidentFrenchie!
Ted 6:08:30 PM
I was in the mostly empty row H. There were quite a few empty seats. I guess Sparks were riding the buzz of the documentary last time. This makes 50 years of Mael shows for me
Lizbot (host) 6:09:05 PM
@ResidentFrenchie - I loved my three weeks in France! Spent 10 days in Paris, 3 in Lyon, and then the rest in the Côte d'Azur, specifically Les Lecques for a few days, then Antibes/Juan Les Pins, and finally, Nice
Lizbot (host) 6:10:24 PM
@Ted - I noticed a lotta empty seats in the middle! Not as well-attended as two years ago for The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte tour!
Lizbot (host) 6:11:33 PM
@Ted - Wow, 50 is impressive! I came to their music nearly 30 years ago
Lizbot (host) 6:13:07 PM
@Ted - This time I sprang for front row left, AAA. Russell was RIGHT in my face all night. It was almost too much! The set-list was directly in front of me, so no surprises there. I was tempted to grab it at the end, but I know a woman who was also in the front row who collects them, so I waited for her to grab it
Space Cowboy 6:16:49 PM
I don't understand it but it sounds great
Lizbot (host) 6:17:16 PM
That last song is for whoever requested Michel Polnareff last week! I think it was Dale Hazelton, who isn't here today, but oh well, I am glad he suggested it!
Lizbot (host) 6:17:27 PM
@Space Cowboy - How I feel about most French!
ResidentFrenchie 6:20:45 PM
Waow, c'est génial! Sounds idyllic. Merci for sharing. We were in Toulouse in July. Hopefully you got to tap into French radio while getting around; it's always fun (in whichever country one is traveling). I always discover some new songs, like Sam Sauvage's Les Gens Qui Dansent (J'adore). Right up your alley tonight - tout le monde danse!!!
Lizbot (host) 6:22:52 PM
@ResidentFrenchie - Oh yes! A MAJOR highlight of traveling in other countries for me is listening for new-to-me music on radio in the rental car, in taxis and shops! I found a great station of Francophone African music too! Listened to that a LOT while driving around the south of France!
Lizbot (host) 6:23:32 PM
@ResidentFrenchie - I will have to check out Sam Sauvage's Les Gens Qui Dansent ! Thanks for the recommendation!
Lizbot (host) 6:25:18 PM
@ResidentFrenchie - I neglected to mention: We also got to Giverny, Rouen, and Monaco!
Ted 6:25:59 PM
My baptism was the Indiscreet tour in Chicago. I wish they’d premiered Porcupine for us. I did notice a long line at the merch table post concert.

Lizbot (host) 6:38:41 PM
@michael gudgeon - White wolves deserve to be praised in song!
Lizbot (host) 6:39:06 PM
@Ted - I was very happy they played Whippings and Apologies
dan Cochrane 6:39:09 PM
Jane Birkin is in film, “Blow Up”, talk about a hipster touchstone. Just rewatched it.

dan Cochrane 6:43:27 PM
Very Wes Anderson soundtrack sounding. Credits perhaps.
Lizbot (host) 6:43:58 PM
@Dan Cochrane - Saw Blow Up in my late teens! SO pop! Photographic intrigue! I always thought the shark eye in the photo in Jaws 2 was sorta a plot point lifted from Blow Up
dan Cochrane 6:44:10 PM

dan Cochrane 6:44:39 PM

Andrew G' 6:45:17 PM
@lizbot - i saw you after the sparks show as my family was rushing me out the door.
Lizbot (host) 6:45:25 PM
Bonjour Richard of Rocky Hill!
dan Cochrane 6:46:05 PM
Jeff Beck didn’t want to smash, even a cheap guitar. 28 takes, and they didn’t use one of the. Antonioni himself stomped on it in the film.
Lizbot (host) 6:46:56 PM
@michael gudgeon - I wouldn't be surprised if a few people have samped Historie de Melody Nelson!
Lizbot (host) 6:47:12 PM
@𓀠 ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 𓀡 - Magma is coming, as long as I don't run outta time!
Lizbot (host) 6:48:31 PM
@Andrew G - Oh, belated Hello! I ran into so many ppl at that show! Always a great crowd at Sparks, even if it wasnt as well-attended as in 2023! Saw a lot of listeners, and Pethie from Powerclashing, a couple of friends from other stations too!
dan Cochrane 6:50:00 PM
Time to rewatch Umbrellas Of Cherbourg
Lizbot (host) 6:54:18 PM
@dan Cochrane - I was just thinking about the Umbrellas Of Cherbourg and the music from it earlier today! I saw that once, 25 years ago, borrowed on VHS from the Philadelphia Public Library 19th & Vine original branch!
dan Cochrane 6:55:43 PM
Visually stunning on the big screen! Eye popping color in the umbrella shop. You should see it restored.
Lizbot (host) 6:56:31 PM
@Richard of Rocky Hill - haha, I owe a lot to Google Translate! It got me out of a lot of binds during my travels, especially when my rental car broke down in Antibes!
Ted 6:57:03 PM
I complimented the sound guy for Whippings. It was really powerful.
Lizbot (host) 6:57:51 PM
I love this song, but it is almost TOO much, but also TOO French!
Lizbot (host) 6:58:33 PM
@Ted - One of my favorite Sparks songs and not one they've played much the times I've seen them!
Lizbot (host) 6:59:18 PM
@dan Cochrane - I should! And to think I've only seen Umbrellas of Cherbourg on a well-worn library VHS! It was still gorgeous though!
dan Cochrane 7:00:21 PM
Jane Berkin credited as… “the blonde” in Blow Up.
Lizbot (host) 7:00:49 PM
@dan Cochrane - haha, I didn't know that about Jeff Beck being precious about his guitar! He was the anti-Pete Townshend!
Lizbot (host) 7:01:21 PM
@dan Cochrane - When I read "The Blonde," I hear the words in a Hitchcock voice!
George Korein 7:01:35 PM
The Kobaiaphone is powered by the Vander Graaf generator
Ted 7:02:34 PM
ICYMI : Cardiacs YouTube channel (abcglobus) posted a restored 1984 concert a few weeks back. Oh and a couple of new songs from LSD. Good times in the Pond!
dan Cochrane 7:03:02 PM
They brought in a orgasmatron for that last track
Lizbot (host) 7:03:34 PM
@George Korein - ha! Is Telex powered by the Tesla coil?
dan Cochrane 7:03:58 PM
Orgasma Trone, sorry
Dale Hazelton 7:04:35 PM
i arrived before the arrivederci. hey now.
Lizbot (host) 7:05:32 PM
@dan Cochrane - ha! Yes, even Allen's "Sleeper" refrained from getting that graphic! The orgasmatron was a parody of Wilhelm Reich's orgonw accumulator, which Kate Bush sings about in Cloudbusting!
Lizbot (host) 7:06:23 PM
Bonjour Dale Hazelton! I believe it was you last week who requested Polnareff, which, as you can hear, I've acquired!
Dale Hazelton 7:06:52 PM
yes! sorry i missed the first part of the shoe.
dan Cochrane 7:06:59 PM
Funny! I love the old couple on the street in Annie Hall, “we use a large, vibrating egg”.

Lizbot (host) 7:07:35 PM
@Ted - Oh nice! Have you found a streaming service that has that Cardiacs documentary yet? I keep checking for region free DVDs of it, but no luck
dan Cochrane 7:08:28 PM
Cardiacs, Mr. Bungle equally bonkers/brilliant

@dan Cochrane - ha! I still love Annie Hall, despite everything. So many great lines in that mobie
Dale Hazelton 7:10:40 PM
catherine ribeiro is so haunting.
Lizbot (host) 7:11:29 PM
@Marcus Haupt - Searching for San-Tropez! Breakin' a stick with a brick on the sand, Ridin' a wave in the wake of an old sedan
Lizbot (host) 7:11:43 PM
@Dale Hazelton - I love her so much. Lyon's finest! RIP
dan Cochrane 7:13:12 PM
The Hermes “Birkin Bag” is named after Jane. Who knew?
Lizbot (host) 7:14:44 PM
@dan Cochrane - I love Cardiacs, and Mr. Bungle was more my husband's thing, at least he had a Mr. Bungle phase in his teen years
dan Cochrane 7:15:44 PM
Both bands are new to me. Inexplicably.
Lizbot (host) 7:16:50 PM
@dan Cochrane - I know! It's crazy! I only just recently learned that earlier this year! It wasn't the fabulous Ms. B's fault, but those bags became a real ridiculous status symbol! I rode in a van past their suburban Paris factory on the way to Rouen! It's bonkers one has to buy all this other crud from Hermes to even be put on a waiting list to maybe get an opportunity to blow a fortune on ones of those bags!
Lizbot (host) 7:17:29 PM
@dan Cochrane - Apparently Jane Birkin simply asked Hermes for a bag that could fit more stuff as she was a mom with young Charlotte in tow at the time
dan Cochrane 7:17:29 PM
Have you seen the doc on Ennius Moriconne? Very cool
ResidentFrenchie 7:18:33 PM
Pardon! Had to run an errand, and I felt like I was driving in some foreign country! Radio discoveries in foreign lands are the best...just like on WPRB tout le temps!
ResidentFrenchie 7:18:57 PM
Got any Françafricaine songs? I remember going to a French camp in the northern hills of Minnesota (y'all read that right) and hearing Alane by Wes. That and C'est une belle journée by Mylène Farmer. And we learned line dances to them to boot. Those def fit the vibes tonight!
dan Cochrane 7:18:58 PM
Omg! I love this!
dan Cochrane 7:19:44 PM
Warhol inspired no doubt
Lizbot (host) 7:20:41 PM

dan Cochrane 7:28:11 PM
Criterion Collection has a Varda boxed set.
Lizbot (host) 7:31:33 PM
@dan Cochrane - Yes! I bought that during one of Criterion's sales! I am so glad I have it because these days you never know which films will be pulled, never to return, from streaming platforms! Although, for now, Criterion has an excellent streamer where they rotate their films
Lizbot (host) 7:33:10 PM
@ResidentFrenchie - Bonne nuit! Thank you for tuning in!
Marcus Haupt 7:36:52 PM
That beat is Leo Sayer - "You make me feel like dancing"

@Marcus Haupt - THanks for reminding me of it! Adding it to the list! I just rewatched Godard's "Breathless" this past week. Saw it in my teens and then again last year on original film stock at Ambler Theater!

@dan Cochrane - I love Agnes Varda so much. Have you ever seen her Mur Murs, a doc about the Los Angeles mural arts scene in the late 70s/early 80s? Philly's own "Mural Arts Project" founder Jane Golden is one of the featured artists! I never realized she began in L.A.!

By Cardiacs documentary, do you mean Tales From The Rotten Shed? It’s more rehearsal session than doc but it’s bizarrely fascinating. I’ll do some research for next week.
