RIP Brent Hinds

Ugh. Last few days have been rough. I lived in Atlanta for 2 years and hung out with Brent twice, once in ATL and once in Boston. The news hit hard. I appreciate the tribute, DJ.

I changed my profile pic to me & Brent but it was too sad to look at. ATL has insane drivers; I had many close calls. Folks, watch out for kids, animals, bicyclists, and motorcyclists when you drive!

The Hunter is named after Brent's brother who died in a hunting accident. Mama Hinds has lost two boys.

Hi Matt! ugh! I thought of you when I heard of his passing. I thought of your story you shared about him. :(

I just feel for Brent's lovely wife, his dog Dingus (if Dingus is still alive), and also Matt Pike, since Matt & Brent were quite close.

I was almost run over by an impatient driver in Atlanta when I was walking in a crosswalk to see Fu Manchu. Car accidents are so senseless & tragic.

Yes! I feel so bad for his fam, friends, and all his bandmates 3 I saw a lot of touching tributes from so many people.

My God! Geez! ATL drivers, chill. PLZ and TY!

The outpouring of love has been tremendous. Really reminds us that humans are not so dehumanized yet; we still care.

When I hung out with him before Mastodon/Primus in Boston in 2018, I had an arm brace on for an elbow problem. Brent asked me about, concerned; he wasn't an "all about me" rockstar. Just a regular dude.

I had drinks at the Star Bar in Atlanta where the Blood & Thunder song was filmed. Total, total, southern dive. The bartender got wasted in like 20 minutes. I lived in Avondale Estates, outside downtown Atlanta, where Puddles the Pity Party Clown is from. He's the clown in the Blood & Thunder video.

DJ, Brent's fave bar is called Elmyr, in Atlanta. You can still smoke in there. I visited and some dude got waaaasted and went outside in the rain, facing the front glass of the bar, singing along with the jukebox playing *inside*. It was hilarious. The dude was normal but then just kinda turned into a drunken troubadour. Atlanta is pretty wild.

There's a video of a Mastodon show where Brann does his customary post-show address to the crowd. He asked Brent if Brent had anything to say. Brent says: "Poop lip." It kinda threw Brann off. Brent, I suspect, liked to speak more through his music than doing press interviews. He was kinda surly in a Gen X way, but a good soul down deep.

DJ DW, I also went to Blood Mountain in Georgia with my then-gf. She was like "why are we going to all these bars and Blood Mountain and places?" and I was like "It's a Mastodon thing." She was a good sport.

Blood Mountain in the north Georgia mountains is beautiful. Southern end of the mighty Appalachians.

You could tell from his tone he really cared and appreciated the fans. All the dudes are southern gentlemen. Imperfect people, flawed, but well-meaning.

I always chuckle at the well-known story about Brent auditioning for Mastodon. First practice, he was so wasted he couldn't play, guitar was outta tune. But the next day they tried again and he blew them all away with how good he was.

There it is! Sea monsters. LOL. Mastodon growing up in the 1970s got a lot of the 1970s cryptozoology influence. Matt Pike is huge on that stuff, too. Aliens, ancient civilizations, dogmen, etc. Nerd metal!

Brann Dailor got the inspo for Leviathan from reading Moby Dick on the way back from Australia. I've taken that flight once, it's fucking grueling. Like 15 hours, you get 3 meals and have time to sleep. I always found it cool Brann was reading arguably the greatest american novel ever written (as Captain Ahab will argue).

That's a cool fact. I have not visited the Aussies yet...... not yet.

Also I don't think I ever read that book. I don't remember reading it in school. Have you?

Australia is a lot like America. But the interior is really wild, harsh, desert. Australia has a wonderful punk scene. So many good bands.

I tried reading Moby Dick but gave up. LOL. High schoolers used to read it in entirety!

Last Brent true story: when I met him & Raisa at the dive bar, Brent stuck his big tattooed head through the little window the servers used to get drinks from the bar for the outside patio. It happened too fast to get a pic, but was hilarious. All I saw was Brent's head in this tiny window asking for more drinks. I'll always remember that.

I love how Brent used a one-way server window as his own private tunnel to the bar. His speaking voice is very different than his singing voice. He is kinda nerdy just talking. LOL!
