hey PRB people
DJ Bohr (host) 6:03:37 PM
hey gang. im aware that we have funky drummer of doom again.... im working on getting it resolved now!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:07:48 PM
Funky drummer is gone rn
DJ Bohr (host) 6:08:40 PM
suh weet
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:08:56 PM
(but mostly I am listening to local all-news radio b/c of the storms and flooding in my area)
DJ Bohr (host) 6:11:22 PM
best of luck dealing with the storms....
DJ Bohr (host) 6:11:31 PM
rob do you get FM signal or just online streaming?
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:21:10 PM
Online streaming! We're almost in DC!!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:22:31 PM
and thanks DJ Bohr. The rainfall rate has diminished substantially but streams are still rising and roads are still flooding
DJ Bohr (host) 6:23:38 PM
ahh, well hopefully the worst has passed you by and its smooth sailing from here
DJ Bohr (host) 6:23:51 PM
how did you come to hear about/find WPRB??
Chris Mohr 6:47:32 PM
Iggy!!
Chris Mohr 6:47:54 PM
Hey, DJ Bohr 👋
DJ Bohr (host) 6:48:06 PM
hey there!
Chris Mohr 6:51:51 PM
Fripp's guitar playing on Heroes is so evocative
DJ Bohr (host) 6:53:02 PM
agreed!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:56:37 PM
DJ Bohr, I (re)learned about WPRB from an indiepop email list in the mid 90s. A couple of years later my partner and I were driving from the DC area to New England a few times a year for a few years. So I made sure that we got WPRB in southern Jersey as soon as it was possible in our car, and listened to it until we got into WFMU territory
DJ Bohr (host) 7:00:24 PM
thats so sick! what an awesome story
Chris Mohr 7:00:33 PM
@Rob, This is the way!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:00:37 PM
That said, I was driving back from Maine in 1978, after sundown in March. I was twirling the dial in my car and came across an FM station playing David Bowie's "Heroes", with the successive verses in English French and German. I later realized that I could have been listening to WPRB ...
DJ Bohr (host) 7:02:24 PM
feels like a PRB esque way to play music
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:04:10 PM
WPRB rules!
Chris Mohr 7:04:39 PM
Speaking of Yes, they had some semi-EDM remixes of their songs in the lare 2000s. I have the idea that Steve Howe's son did the remixing, but that could be looked up
Chris Mohr 7:04:53 PM
*late
DJ Bohr (host) 7:07:48 PM
oh really? ill need to look into that... i always appreciate a funky EDM song
michael gudgeon 7:19:35 PM
y0y0 folks
DJ Bohr (host) 7:19:53 PM
hey MG!
Chris Mohr 7:21:42 PM
Kurt Vile is almost my neighbor! (Well, I live in the next neighborhood over from him...)
DJ Bohr (host) 7:21:56 PM
that's basically neighbors
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:24:20 PM
To the best of my recollection, the person on the indiepop list posting in the mid 90s about WPRB and how wonderful it was, lived in Philadelphia and wrote something like 'if I orient my stereo antenna just so I can pick up WPRB'.
Chris Mohr 7:24:43 PM
Tim Buckley + Kurt Vile together = reminds me of Richard Dawkins a bit
DJ Bohr (host) 7:25:43 PM
thats an awesome story... i love all of the tales and stories PRB has generated and created over the decades....
DJ Bohr (host) 7:25:51 PM
ill check dawkins out @chris
Chris Mohr 7:25:55 PM
Rob, I can get WPRB most places in Philly from my car, but my house is in a dead zone for the terrestrial signal, alas
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:26:40 PM
I remember their name being River. Imagine my surprise when, years later, I started streaming WPRB and other stations on my laptop in early 2011, to find a dj named River with a show on WPRB. To the best of my recollection Ishe said that she had a Philly connection, so it could have been the very same person from 15+ years before
Chris Mohr 7:26:54 PM
Dana K said she saw him on his last US tour (last year?) and he was great
DJ Bohr (host) 7:27:47 PM
wow thats sick rob, what a crazy coincidence....
DJ Bohr (host) 7:28:00 PM
and yeah i need to branch out a bit more in terms of seeing live bands.....
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:28:09 PM
Chris, bummer about your house being a dead zone. In two places I lived in during the 80s & 90s, I had to orient my stereo antenna exactly right in order to pick up the local college radio station WMUC
DJ Bohr (host) 7:28:13 PM
i tend to only see bands I already know i like....
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:30:47 PM
@DJ Bohr, that's what I remember, hopefully it was accurate
DJ Bohr (host) 7:31:58 PM
yeah still really really cool... i think my favorite PRB story involved a noob show introduction, one of the noobs played a song, and one of the guys in the band popped into the chat to say that we had played his bands song while he was driving home from work
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:34:43 PM
@DJ Bohr, that is an amusing story! (and I am 125% sure that my David Bowie Heroes story is accurate)
Chris Mohr 7:35:01 PM
@DJ Bohr, let's hear it for community-supported, independent radio!
DJ Bohr (host) 7:35:13 PM
woot woot
DJ Bohr (host) 7:35:17 PM
i love PRB!
DJ Bohr (host) 7:35:26 PM
@rob did you ever see bowie in concert??
Chris Mohr 7:37:06 PM
I like Dire Straits AND they were overplayed in my Youth.... Mark Knopfler's soundtrack for the movie "Local Hero" and his album of duets with Emmylou Harris remain faves for me, in any case
DJ Bohr (host) 7:37:42 PM
ill need to check 'em out.... i always hesitate to play bands of dire straits ilk, because in my mind they are overplayed (but maybe not anymore??)
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:40:48 PM
@DJ Bohr, I did see Bowie, 3 times, all at the Capital Centre in Largo Maryland. In 1976 (home from college) with my sister, in 1978 driving from the Richmond VA area *and back* with a college friend (no booze, only coffee), and in 1983 with local friends. I was over Bowie by 1983 (it was the Let's Dance tour, and I was getting into hardcore punk).
DJ Bohr (host) 7:41:21 PM
right on.... im so jealous!
Chris Mohr 7:41:44 PM
Dire Straits is not as overplayed as they used to be, that's for sure
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:43:08 PM
While my favorite Bowie was 1970s Bowie, I was quite disconsolate when he died in 2016. Fortunately KEXP radio in Seattle devoted that day to Bowie and his legacy. That helped a lot.
DJ Bohr (host) 7:43:46 PM
i think 70s bowie is likely my favorite too
DJ Bohr (host) 7:44:19 PM
the rise and fall of ziggy stardust is in my top 5 albums of all time
Richard of Rocky Hill 7:47:39 PM
@ DJ Bohr (host) I'm greatly enjoying your show (as always). Thanks so very much for including outstanding ~ but woefully underplayed ~ tracks by Zeppelin, America, Dire Straits and especially the marvelous Tim Buckley.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:48:39 PM
My fave Bowie albums are Low and Heroes. Ziggy Stardust is great too
DJ Bohr (host) 7:50:42 PM
@RoRH glad to hear it! always happy to lend some airtime to some underappreciated tracks!
DJ Bohr (host) 7:51:09 PM
@rob yes, those are great as well! i actually wrote a paper about the rise and fall of ziggy stardust so im a bit biased in that regard
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:56:10 PM
@DJ Bohr, how cool!
michael gudgeon 7:56:35 PM
LOVE THIS SONG!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:57:22 PM
This has been a great show, DJ Bohr (what I caught of it). Hopefully there won't be any horrid weather the next time I listen!
DJ Bohr (host) 7:58:18 PM
cheers! thanks for tuning in all!!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:59:17 PM
Final weather update: the rain stopped maybe 15 minutes ago and there is blue sky
DJ Bohr (host) 8:00:09 PM
yay!
