Lizbot (host) 5:00:45 PM
Hi Number 6!
Number 6 5:03:06 PM
I'm home bound till Monday due to medical issues.:(
Lizbot (host) 5:04:04 PM
@Number 6 - Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that!
Number 6 5:04:55 PM
I should live, though.:)
Lizbot (host) 5:05:25 PM
@Number 6 - Fingers crossed! Float back into the barge as soon as you're well!

Thanks for the show, Lucy Catemoji!
Lizbot (host) 5:12:13 PM
Hi Rob from Maryland 🦀!
Lizbot (host) 5:12:38 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Thanks! Technically tomorrow, but this show functions as my indulgent birthday episode!
Number 6 5:14:00 PM
@Rob- Thanks!
David Shortell 5:15:37 PM
I saw the Monks at the Westbeth Theatre in 1999.
Lizbot (host) 5:16:14 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - The catbirds had better tamp down their possessive antics in the backyard this weekend! Or else leave me offerings of bits of dog fur and millet
Lizbot (host) 5:16:24 PM
Hi David Shortell!
Lizbot (host) 5:17:51 PM
@David Shortell - Nice! I know a couple ppl who made it to that show. I really wish I had gone. I'd heard about it beforehand and spent a lot of time in NYC crashing at my friend's place at the time. I could've made it happen!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:18:54 PM
@Lizbot, I will have a talking to with the catbirds on catbird dot net so they don't spoil your birthday and weekend
Lizbot (host) 5:19:40 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Excellent. That's why I'm glad I have listeners with bird knowledge!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:24:44 PM
Gosh, I love this song so much!!

@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - More twee to come!
Lizbot (host) 5:26:50 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - I was a bit starstuck with I interviewed these guys!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:27:06 PM
Aw, this song was written by Mathew Fletcher 😢😢 RIP
Lizbot (host) 5:28:41 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Yeah, after Mathew's passing, Heavenly, their post-Talulah Gosh band, as I'm sure you know, broke up, but I'm glad they reformed as Marine Science and then Tender Trap! Rob Pursey and Amelia Fletcher are so nice and generous with their time!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:28:44 PM
@Lizbot, I bet you were! I would be too. I think I heard that interview.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:29:36 PM
The vibes of all those bands was/were nice and caring
Lizbot (host) 5:30:13 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Yeah, I agree. They had a DIY punk ethos with a twee attitude and friendliness

Hello Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly)!
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 5:46:42 PM
How's it cookin', y'all? I'm late to the party. I'll have to leave again in an hour for a doctor's appointment, but I thought I'd hang out here for a bit. :D

@michael gudgeon - Happy 4th/Holiday Weekend!
michael gudgeon 5:49:21 PM
was revisiting some old shins last night love this album
Lizbot (host) 5:49:38 PM
@Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) - Glad you could join us, if only briefly pre-appointment! Having a pre-birthday party kind of a show!
michael gudgeon 5:50:18 PM
oh yes birthday bot !?
Lizbot (host) 5:51:35 PM
@michael gudgeon - Shins' Oh, Inverted World album is a modern classic! I guess not that modern anymore, but ageless! I remember the week it came out, I bought it at Space Boy on South Street, popped it in my discman while walking to Penn's Landing on a gorgeous day, and was totally blown away. Listened to it over and over
Lizbot (host) 5:53:33 PM
@F Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) - Any plans for the holiday weekend? It looks like it might actually remain rain-free!
Lizbot (host) 5:54:21 PM
@michael gudgeon - I'm a Fourth of July baby, which at least guarantees lots of fireworks and cookouts.
Danosaur🦖 5:54:26 PM
Hello, Lizbot and fellow chatters
Lizbot (host) 5:56:33 PM
Hello Danosaur🦖!
Danosaur🦖 5:56:34 PM
Always like the naive style of Jonathan Richmond
Danosaur🦖 5:57:03 PM
Kinda reminds me of Wes Anderson only music
michael gudgeon 5:58:01 PM
siiiick lizbot in regards to bday, even cooler picture painted!
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 5:58:40 PM
Heyyy, Dan!
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 5:59:53 PM
@Liz, I don't have any plans for the holiday weekend. Dead as usual here. Definitely not as fun as last year.
Danosaur🦖 5:59:54 PM
Hey, FME!
Danosaur🦖 6:00:23 PM
Don't be a stranger and don't be a strangler either
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 6:01:23 PM
ROFL!!!
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 6:01:33 PM
It's party day today and tomorrow, so no strangulation! :D
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:01:57 PM
Hi FME and Danosaur and michael and Jim
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 6:02:36 PM
Heyyyy, Rob!
Lizbot (host) 6:03:23 PM
This song is such a warm weather anthem!
Danosaur🦖 6:03:23 PM
Hi Rob!
Danosaur🦖 6:03:56 PM
Are the Go Betweens from Australia?
Lizbot (host) 6:04:37 PM
@michael gudgeon - yeah, I can't complain! Always got a party vibe throughout the nation on my bday, and my mom lied when I was kid and told me the fireworks were for me! ha!
Danosaur🦖 6:05:07 PM
@Lizbot - Happy birthday!
Lizbot (host) 6:05:32 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - I can see the Wes Anderson comparison, except I'd say Jonathan Richman is a lot looser. His music might be precious, but he's not precious about it and plays with it. Wes Anderson is so meticulous
Lizbot (host) 6:05:53 PM
@Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) - I hope you find somehting good to do!
Lizbot (host) 6:06:27 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Yes, the Go-Betweens are Aussies
Danosaur🦖 6:07:38 PM
@Lizbot - very true. Jonathan Richmond has a bit of a DIY looseness that I like. Wes Andersen does not.
Lizbot (host) 6:07:42 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Thanks! Heading to a couple BBQs and hoping to catch the fireworks in South Jersey on my way back to Philly tomorrow.
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 6:08:09 PM
@Liz Other than walking my dog, which is every day. Every day is a holiday to him! :D
Danosaur🦖 6:08:51 PM
I've been watching Your Friends and Neighbors on Apple+ and they took a trip to Princeton and it made me think of the station
David Shortell 6:09:02 PM
Jonathan Richman chose to appear in films by the Farrelly Brothers rather than Wes Anderson.
Danosaur🦖 6:09:59 PM
@David Shortell - that choice says a lot
Lizbot (host) 6:10:56 PM
@David Shortell - True! That was the main draw for me to seeing There's Something About MAry in the theater when it came out, though I want justice for Jonathan WRT to his end in that movie...No, I laughed, I was glad he got exposed to a wider audience
Lizbot (host) 6:12:07 PM
@Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) - ha, my dog DEMANDED a visit to the dog park today. It's bumping with many hounds there after so many rainy days! Dogs having pent up socialization energy and more people are gonna be off for the holiday weekend!
Lizbot (host) 6:13:08 PM
More Go-Betweens! This one is the stay inside, mopey opposite of Bye Bye Pride!
Danosaur🦖 6:13:20 PM
Boy, if you get a good owner, a dog's life can be pretty sweet
Lizbot (host) 6:14:49 PM
General Chat: I am shocked I have heard almost NO amateur firecrackers in my neighborhood! I live in Philly and usually I start hearing firecrackers going off beginning a couple weeks before the 4th! Haven't heard anything other than the offical firework displays
Danosaur🦖 6:15:30 PM
Hmm, that's weird, Lizbot
Lizbot (host) 6:15:36 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Our dog, Nuala, is spoiled with loads of attention but if you met her, you'd want to spoil her too. She is a very good-natured floof
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:15:42 PM
Should I have ice cream after dinner?
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 6:16:02 PM
A few neighbors have been setting off fireworks here and there for about a couple of weeks. Sheesh.
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 6:16:10 PM
I scream for ice cream!
Danosaur🦖 6:16:10 PM
@Rob the answer to that question is always yes
Lizbot (host) 6:17:01 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Re: ice cream: I endorse this activity
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:17:03 PM
Alright! Ty Danosaur & FME
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:17:12 PM
And Lizbot
Danosaur🦖 6:17:39 PM
Haven't heard any near me the San Gabriel Valley but I also saw signs saying that fireworks are illegal and getting caught could mean fines or jail time or both.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:17:43 PM
I've always loved the group name Downy Mildew
George Korein 6:17:56 PM
there's something about Mt Airy
Lizbot (host) 6:18:03 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - I saw some interesting flavors recently and I want them: sour watermelon taffy by Jeni's ice cream. Had oil olive softserve at Picnic in the East Kensington neighborhood of Philly a few weeks ago and am still dreaming about getting that again!
George Korein 6:18:05 PM
Happy Bot Day!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:18:11 PM
Nobody set off fireworks in my neighborhood for Canada Day, eh
Lizbot (host) 6:18:21 PM
Hi George Korein! Thanks a bot!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:18:54 PM
@Lizbot, I'll look for that Jeni's flavor the next time we go to the places that carry that brand
Danosaur🦖 6:18:56 PM
We've had too many fires here so I hope nobody lights the foothills on fire again.
Lizbot (host) 6:19:00 PM
@Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) - Is Cali beating out Philly for fireworks??
Danosaur🦖 6:19:38 PM
Hey, George!
Lizbot (host) 6:19:57 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Downy Mildew is such a sensory-centric name! Makes me think of lying in the woods near my house as a kid
Danosaur🦖 6:20:18 PM
Ooh, this is a good cover
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:20:37 PM
@Danosaur, yikes, I hope not. I saw a weather model map that has surface and elevated fire smoke and it looked like SoCal was on fire :-(
Lizbot (host) 6:20:44 PM
@George Korein - "there's something about Mt Airy" - har har. I wouldn't mind Jonathan Richman popping up with his guitar in and around Mt. Airy serenading passersby
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:21:00 PM
Hi George
Danosaur🦖 6:21:20 PM
@Rob yes, there is a big fire called the Madre fire but I don't know where it is
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:21:35 PM
@Lizbot, Downy Mildew makes me think of laundry that's been wet/damp for a couple of days
Lizbot (host) 6:22:34 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - the home-set-off firecrackers WERE illegal in PA for a long time, but that was never enforced and very common all summer in Philly. Then in 2020, when everyone was bored during lockdown, they made them legal in PA and suddenly there were going off every night! It's died down a lot since then! I guess everyone got it outta their system, or burned off a finger!
Danosaur🦖 6:22:47 PM
Downy Mildew sounds like you'd need to take antibiotics to get rid of it
Danosaur🦖 6:23:45 PM
Ooh, yeah! Dream Police
Lizbot (host) 6:24:07 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - ha! I never thought of that, but now I'm probably gonna think of those powder blue/white/pink bottles of Downy when I hear that song!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:24:16 PM
@Danosaur, it's in SLO https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2025/7/2/madre-fire and it was started yesterday and it's not contained and it's already burned 35k+ acres (50+ sq. miles)!!
Danosaur🦖 6:24:16 PM
@Lizbot - yeah, losing a finger will slow you down for sure
Lizbot (host) 6:24:59 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Excellent Chicago band Cheer-Accident's cover of Cheap Trick's Dream Police! THey're coming to The Rotunda in Philly on July 24th!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:25:11 PM
these last two covers are excellent!
Danosaur🦖 6:25:34 PM
@Rob Ah, that's north of LA but I have seen the air quality warnings. Hope they get a handle on it soon.
Lizbot (host) 6:25:48 PM
This bridge is BONKERS
Lizbot (host) 6:26:20 PM
Like I am in awe of this bridge. Cheer-Accident takes the already bonkers original bridge of this song and stretches it out with more preposterousness!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:26:21 PM
@Lizbot, it's my biology and biomedical indexing background that makes me think of that when I see the name Downy Mildew
Danosaur🦖 6:26:54 PM
They really took it to the bridge
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:26:59 PM
@Danosaur bingo! antibiotics will definitely get rid of downy mildew
Lizbot (host) 6:27:01 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 / @Danosaur🦖- Yikes, yeah I hope California avoids yet more fires, fireworks-caused or otherwise
Lizbot (host) 6:27:11 PM
this BRIDGE
Randy Marthins 6:27:19 PM
That's a hell of a bridge!!!
Lizbot (host) 6:27:28 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - haha, yeah, makes sense. Now I'm picturing petri dishes of mildew
Lizbot (host) 6:27:43 PM
Hi Randy Marthins! For real!
Danosaur🦖 6:27:51 PM
This is epic!
Lizbot (host) 6:28:09 PM
@Randy Marthins - They're coming to The Rotunda at 40th & Walnut in Philly on July 24th!
Randy Marthins 6:28:16 PM
It's more like a roller coaster
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:28:46 PM
this bridge is really something!!!
Danosaur🦖 6:28:49 PM
They're teasing us with this musical foreplay
Lizbot (host) 6:29:03 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - I love when covers aren't just straight covers and instead the band playing the cover brings something new to it!
Lizbot (host) 6:29:19 PM
Now here's an original song by Cheer-Accident, same band
Lizbot (host) 6:29:40 PM
@Randy Marthins - Apt comparison! Dizzying!
Randy Marthins 6:30:00 PM
Its the kinda bridge that when you're over it you are SO taking the EZ-Pass lane
Danosaur🦖 6:30:26 PM
@Randy Marthins Haha!
Randy Marthins 6:31:04 PM
@liz - I WAS an English Major before I went to Art school #iknowwords
Lizbot (host) 6:31:48 PM
@Randy Marthins - haha, it's the kinda bridge that you've gotta turn up your stereo upon approach and hit the pinnacle of right when the sun-drenched horizon comes into view!
Danosaur🦖 6:32:04 PM
That was the Mackinac Bridge of musical bridges
Lizbot (host) 6:32:08 PM
@Randy Marthins - haha! Me Talk Pretty One Day!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:32:35 PM
@Danosaur, yup!
Lizbot (host) 6:33:17 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Yes! I actually drove on that during my Michigan road-trip a couple summers ago! Went to Macinac Island!
Randy Marthins 6:33:59 PM
I hate driving over bridges - I stare at the road abt 20' in front on Mr car and say 'it's just a hill-it's just a hill'
Danosaur🦖 6:34:03 PM
@Lizbot - I hope you got some fudge while you were there. It's a beautiful spot
Randy Marthins 6:34:43 PM
*my car - not Mr car; it's a She
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:36:44 PM
@Randy Marthins there's a 7-mile-long bridge in the Florida Keys, I guess you won't be driving over that? ;-)
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:37:02 PM
(and hi)
Randy Marthins 6:38:32 PM
I have, long time ago - but it's more of a causeway, if I remember?
Randy Marthins 6:38:52 PM
CROWS WOODS!!!
George Korein 6:39:39 PM
Nuala met up with a keeshond at the park
Randy Marthins 6:40:12 PM
David Byrne wrote "and she was" about a girl he knew from HS who would take LSD and lay in a field by the Yoo-hoo factory in Baltimore
Danosaur🦖 6:40:59 PM
That sounds like quite a was to spend an afternoon, Randy
Lizbot (host) 6:41:41 PM
@George Korein - Excellent! We just saw a keeshond trotting jauntily in Center City yesterday!
Danosaur🦖 6:42:04 PM
I feel like I should be smoking a cigarette when listening to this song
Lizbot (host) 6:42:53 PM
@Randy Marthins - ACK! I forgot you are familiar with Crows Woods! Yes! And I also had "End of Peyton Creek" near me as a kid, but I think no one else called it that except the kids on my block. It was near Elizabeth Haddon school and had LOTS of skunk cabbage and vines, but I spent many summer afternoons there!
Randy Marthins 6:43:01 PM
My cousin & I smoked weed on the grassy hill next to The Met; that was cool
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:43:04 PM
@Randy, it is more of a causeway. Have you driven over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge between Annapolis MD on the west and Stevensville on the other side of the bay on the east?
Zach 6:43:27 PM
Happy birthday, LizBot!
Danosaur🦖 6:43:56 PM
Is this the song Tim Roth's character was referencing in Pulp Fiction?
Lizbot (host) 6:44:12 PM
Hi Zach! Thank you!
Randy Marthins 6:45:25 PM
I went over it once and I avoid it since; although when we sailed out of BAL to the Bahamas in May we went UNDER it and I thought 'that's not so bad'
Lizbot (host) 6:45:38 PM
@Randy Marthins - Re: "And She Was" - WHOA, really?! That's some choice trivia about one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands!
Lizbot (host) 6:46:03 PM
@Randy Marthins - Baltimore - Home of both Yoo-Hoo AND Domino Sugar...and Natty Bo
Randy Marthins 6:46:39 PM
I heard it in ShopRite once WHILE I was in the soda aisle; I had to get my phone out to document it
Lizbot (host) 6:47:33 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Re: Relax Baby Be Cool - Yeah, definitely the vibe in that song! There is a utterly BONKERS video from France in the 60s or 70s of young French children dressed as Serge Gainsbourg serenading him while smoking cigs!
Randy Marthins 6:48:37 PM
And Frank Zappa, and John Waters (Poe was born in Richmond, but he liven in Baltimore long enough they named a football team after him, sort of)
Danosaur🦖 6:49:56 PM
I'm getting crossplay on the internet feed
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:50:43 PM
@Randy, it's THE way to get from DC to good birding sites on the Eastern Shore/Delmarva Peninsula. The first few times I drove over it (solo) I made sure to do it in the dark b/c I was a little freaked out. But then it was 2 pm on July 2 and I was by myself and I wasn't going to wait until 9:30 p.m. to drive over it. So I took a deep breath ... and survived.
Lizbot (host) 6:50:44 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - oh no. Huh! I'll let our tech guy know! thanks for letting me know. Also. did you try reloading the feed?
Danosaur🦖 6:51:02 PM
Hmm, refreshed the page and it seems like it cleared up. I'll let you know if it returns
Danosaur🦖 6:51:34 PM
Yay! B52s!
Randy Marthins 6:51:38 PM
REM opened for The Police @ JFK; REM/Madness/Joan Jett/The Police

"I'm a Cancer from New Jersey" - Same, Fred. Same. AND Fred Schneidner's 74th birthday was just two days ago!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:52:35 PM
@Lizbot, no probs here
Danosaur🦖 6:52:43 PM
Happy birthday, Fred!
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 6:52:44 PM
We should play "Shiny Happy People" next. REM and B52s! :D
Lizbot (host) 6:52:49 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Good to know! Phew
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 6:53:06 PM
Er, B-52s.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:53:42 PM
@Randy, long ago I was on a ship and sailed under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. I looked up at it and hoped I would never drive on it.
Lizbot (host) 6:54:01 PM
@Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) - haha, poor REM was so maligned for that one, but it was cool seeing Kate Pierson with REM. I think they were trying to do a follow-up to tge Green album's "Stand" in some ways, making it a fun irreverent dance song
Randy Marthins 6:54:31 PM
Fred Schneider & Debbie Harry share July 1 birthday
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 6:54:56 PM
@Liz, I personally thought it was a really cool thing too!
Lizbot (host) 6:55:03 PM
@Randy Marthins - Ooh, I'm in good birthday week company!
Danosaur🦖 6:55:04 PM
@Randy now that's an auspicious birthday
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 6:55:12 PM
All the July babies! My dad is one of them too.
Lizbot (host) 6:55:20 PM
@Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) - Yes! A refreshing lack of cynicism!
Randy Marthins 6:55:32 PM
@rob - the NYC don't frighten me as they're not so steep: GW IS pretty much flat
Danosaur🦖 6:56:00 PM
Yeah, it wasn't cool to actually have fun in the 90's
Lizbot (host) 6:56:27 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - yikes! I maybe don't wanna know what goes on under those bridges! But...but they're designed to shake intentionally for shock-absorption purposes, right??!
Randy Marthins 6:56:52 PM
BEST birthday is 10/31 - Larry Mullen (u2) Peter Jackson (LOTL) and I born same day/same year
Danosaur🦖 6:56:58 PM
I like the 80's with all the fun, dance music and nonsense
Lizbot (host) 6:57:03 PM
@Randy Marthins - Were you at that REM/Madness/Joan Jett/The Police show? Crazy line-up
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 6:57:22 PM
'80s ALWAYS rule! :D
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:58:09 PM
@Lizbot: REM/Madness/Joan Jett/The Police show?! When Was That?
Randy Marthins 6:58:50 PM
Oh yeah!!! There's a recording of it available on the UPenn radio station (we won't say the name) but sting stated the show saying "it's 98 degrees today --- the same temperature as BLOOD!!!"
Randy Marthins 6:59:02 PM
1983
Lizbot (host) 6:59:05 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Ask Randy, who mentioned it earlier!
Randy Marthins 6:59:38 PM
LiveAid was 1985
Lizbot (host) 6:59:55 PM
@Randy Marthins - As I suspected, I was too young for that show! I would've had to been brought there by my parents and they weren't fans of any of those bands! Not their generation's music!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:00:19 PM
@Randy, GW never bothered me but Verr. Narrows looked so freaking high from underneath
Lizbot (host) 7:00:34 PM
@Randy Marthins - Oh Sting, being so dramatic!
Lizbot (host) 7:01:02 PM
@Randy Marthins - I watched LiveAid on TV with my family. THAT I remember!
Randy Marthins 7:01:14 PM
@rob - That's the one the guy falls from in Saturday Night Fever
Randy Marthins 7:01:56 PM
@liz - yeah, his hair was still orange from Dune
Danosaur🦖 7:03:17 PM
When I was getting crosstalk on the feed I thought I heard the start of a Richard Cheese song. Was that you Lizbot?
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:03:33 PM
@Lizbot & @Randy, I found out the year. That would have been a phenomenal show
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:03:39 PM
*concert
Lizbot (host) 7:03:52 PM
Speaking of Live Aid, does anyone remember those Farm Aid concerts? I remember footage of the first one. I was just reminded of that this morning. I was thinking about the somewhat kooky Field of Dreams movie and wondering if that screenwriter thought about making the main character a farmer partly because the death of the small family-owned farm was in the news a lot in the mid-late 80s. And also he needed a cornfield to build "it"
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:04:18 PM
@Randy, I never saw Saturday Night Fever
Danosaur🦖 7:05:29 PM
@Lizbot - I do remember when FarmAid was a thing
Lizbot (host) 7:07:10 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Yeah, I had completely forgotten about Farm Aid - The debut of the Sammy Hagar era of Van Halen!
Randy Marthins 7:07:22 PM
The funny thing about that was it was developed from an article in The New Yorker or New York magazine about disco "culture" which was kind of underground, but EXPLODED after the movie came out. Years later, the author of the article admitted "I made the whole thing up!!!"
Danosaur🦖 7:07:38 PM
Never a fan of Van Hagar
Lizbot (host) 7:07:59 PM
@Randy Marthins - oh god, that weird Dune movie my brother made me see!! I WISH Jodorowsky got to finish his version!
Randy Marthins 7:08:12 PM
Farm aid to me is just Willie, Neil Young & John Mellencamp
Lizbot (host) 7:08:17 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Yes! Whoa! Weird
Randy Marthins 7:09:14 PM
Hey, there is a time & place for Van Hagar, trust me - sometimes "When it's love" just *fits*
Danosaur🦖 7:09:22 PM
@Randy Mathins - Wow! That's crazy. But if you repeat a lie often enough it can become real
Randy Marthins 7:11:54 PM
I saw a doc about Jodorwsky, and the Art direction/ design is INSANE
Danosaur🦖 7:12:08 PM
The Cave of the Unknown sounds like a euphemism
Francis 7:16:03 PM
It's France, so of course it was real wine and cigs
Danosaur🦖 7:16:04 PM
French children smoking cigarettes sounds very on point
Lizbot (host) 7:16:05 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - ha!
Lizbot (host) 7:16:29 PM
Hi Francis! Good point! The French don't mess around!
Randy Marthins 7:17:33 PM
@danosaur - "The Cave of the Unknown sounds like a euphemism" or after hours club in Philly, mid 80s
Francis 7:18:13 PM
Iwas there visiting my brother, and I loved seeing the trade workers ordering beer with their breakfast at 7AM
Lizbot (host) 7:19:51 PM
@Francis - yeah, I am going to France for a family wedding this August - My sister-in-law is marrying a Parisian. I remember French children drinking red wine with their dinners in French movies!
Danosaur🦖 7:20:27 PM
When I visited France in 1978 even the pigeons were smoking
Lizbot (host) 7:20:38 PM
@Randy Marthins - I'd happily time-travel back to an 80s club version of The Cave of the Unknown! All the better if the club is actually cave-themed!
Lizbot (host) 7:21:34 PM
@Randy Marthins - I love the maximalist visionary style of Jodorowsky! I prefer The Holy Mountain to El Topo, but all his scenes look like surrealist painting in THM!
Randy Marthins 7:22:12 PM
The East Side Club was quite cave-like
Ted 7:23:14 PM
My first date with my future wife was Jodorowsky’s Santa Sangre.
Lizbot (host) 7:23:43 PM
@Randy Marthins - True! Did you see Jay Schwartz's student documentary about East Side Club and the late 70s/early 80s Philly post-punk/new wave/no wave scene?? He screened it at The Bok this spring! What a punk reunion that was!
Randy Marthins 7:23:54 PM
Saw Duran Duran there, most notably - also black flag, billy idol, and stray cats
Lizbot (host) 7:25:30 PM
Hi Ted! Oh wow, what a date night! And Claudio Argento collaborated with him on that one, too, so Italo-horror influence!
Lizbot (host) 7:26:13 PM
@Randy Marthins - I'm sure we talked about him before on here, but do you remember Lee Paris? He turned up in Jay's doc talking about that scene
Randy Marthins 7:26:34 PM
No I missed that!!! The closet we got to a reunion was Nancy Barilles book tour
Lizbot (host) 7:26:51 PM
@Danosaur🦖 -ha! I hope those pigeons were reading Foucault
Francis 7:26:52 PM
LOL - one of the wildest first dates was a friend of mine who took his date to the the Dwarves in the early 90's when they were still really chaotic. She didn't work out
Randy Marthins 7:27:34 PM
Yeah, Lee Paris, Nick Diesel, Mel Toxic, Joey Bruno!!!
Lizbot (host) 7:28:10 PM
@Francis - haha, amazing! Well that was trial by fire!
Randy Marthins 7:29:43 PM
@liz - there's a Sigma Kids one out there with Patti from Doobies and her friends w/david bowie
Lizbot (host) 7:31:03 PM
@Randy Marthins - Mel Toxic! DRE!
Lizbot (host) 7:34:11 PM
@Randy Marthins / @Danosaur🦖- Was literally just having a Diamond Dave vs. Sammy Hagar convo with my husband yesterday. He was defending Hagar. I have no beef with Hagar, he seems like a nice enough fellow. But what I want from a Van Halen is a chaotic wired up Diamond Dave screaming like a wildcat! He is a crucial element. And his autobiography is insane. Good beach reading!
Randy Marthins 7:36:35 PM
I really LOVE what Dave is doing now - his dance videos; he is truly living a line from one of his songs "I'd rather be an art project, baby, than a weasel wishing I was wearing one"
Lizbot (host) 7:37:42 PM
@Randy Marthins - ha, you gotta admire his energy if nothing else! He demands attention!
Lizbot (host) 7:39:31 PM
@Randy Marthins / @Danosaur - WHen I think of my mid-80s Van Halen experiences, it was mostly jumping around to the "1984" album with my brother, and watching that INSANE claymation burger singing "Everybody Wants Some" in "One Crazy Summer".
Danosaur🦖 7:39:58 PM
I met Dave and guitarist Steve Vai while rock climbing in Chatsworth back in the mid 80's. He was very much what you'd think he'd be. He did not disappoint
Ted 7:40:12 PM
We’re still together. The second date was Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. (She’s also a Sparks fan)
Randy Marthins 7:40:27 PM
I think "demands attention" is not his thing anymore - he has the time and means to do what he wants, he puts it out, and if no one is into he besides him, he's ok w/that too
Lizbot (host) 7:42:17 PM
@Ted - Oh man! Was Henry for real your second date movie?! AMazing!
Danosaur🦖 7:42:52 PM
@Ted - bold move for a second date
Lizbot (host) 7:43:08 PM
@Randy Marthins - yeah, I respect that. I've caught glimpes of his recent work, but I still think of him as the leopard-print skin-tight pants Diamond Dave
Lizbot (host) 7:43:57 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Oh what? THat's crazy!
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 7:44:08 PM
I'm back. Sort of. I missed all the SMOKIN' conversation earlier! :D
Lizbot (host) 7:44:34 PM
@Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) - Welcome back! haha, still time to catch up!
Ted 7:44:34 PM
BTW Lez Zeppelin put on a kickass show in Lititz PA on Saturday. Beautiful intimate venue but not that many fans. Maybe just too remote.
Randy Marthins 7:44:51 PM
@lizbot - he's channeling the vaudeville song&dance man that he always wanted to be
Fried Monkey Eggs (Monkey Jelly) 7:45:10 PM
Trying to read the whole thread again. LOL.
Danosaur🦖 7:45:34 PM
@Lizbot - Yeah, we were out there climbing at Stoney Point and Dave came walking around the corner wearing the outfit from the Jump video. We talked about the climb we were doing
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:45:37 PM
@FME me too and yup
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:45:56 PM
@Danosaur, that is so true about French pigeons
Danosaur🦖 7:46:16 PM
Nice garage rock vibe with this one
Lizbot (host) 7:46:45 PM
@Ted - I still gotta catch Lez Zeppelin! My friend who went to the Todd Rundgren show said he had to cut the set short due to the rain.
Francis 7:47:15 PM
Concur - love the raw garage rock
Number 6 7:47:31 PM
Thanks for a nice uplifting show, BCNU!
Ted 7:48:23 PM
Glad to know I made the right choice between Todd and Zep!
Lizbot (host) 7:49:12 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Love Thee Midniters! First time I stumbled upon that one, I was in my early 20s and visiting a friend in NYC and played it over and over all weekend! probably drove her nuts!
Lizbot (host) 7:49:37 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - You mean he wasn't standing there beside the "record machine"!?
Danosaur🦖 7:50:14 PM
@Lizbot - Ha! Nope just standing there in the dirt chatting with me.
Lizbot (host) 7:50:44 PM
@Ted - Yeah, it was a rough night, weather-wise! I LOVE the name Lez Zeppelin!
Danosaur🦖 7:51:09 PM
Lez Zepplin is a great band name
Danosaur🦖 7:51:34 PM
Wasn't this in The Fantastic Mr Fox?
Mary Jones 7:51:48 PM
Happy birthday Lizbot! (Which is l I can do right now, I just got home and am about to eat dinner—but Den and I want to wish you happy birthday.)
Lizbot (host) 7:53:03 PM
Hi Mary Jones! Thanks!
Randy Marthins 7:53:17 PM
@danosaur - last month there was a vid going around when Bill Hader was on stern and he told "a story a friend of mine told me about a time Henry Rollins met David Lee Roth" being the Rollins fan I am, I found HIS telling of it --- there WERE differences. believe it or not, some people liked/believed the Hader version vs Rollins
Lizbot (host) 7:54:23 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Yes!! And I LOVE the use of Let Her Dance in that final scene with all the animals rejoicing in the grocery store in the middle of the night! One of my favorite scenes in any Wes Anderson movie
Danosaur🦖 7:54:37 PM
@Randy Marthins - David was very nice to me. He was very enthusiastic but nice and polite
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:54:54 PM
