Great to be back on the air!
TAndy 10:20:57 AM
Hey there, welcome back!
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 10:21:10 AM
:)
Richard of Rocky Hill 10:22:45 AM
@ Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) How fine to have you and "Blues Off the Record" here, back on the 'PRB waves.
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 10:24:00 AM
Richard -- thanks as always for listening!
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 10:24:13 AM
What did you make of Sinners by the way?
Richard of Rocky Hill 10:26:19 AM
Bukka White's "When Can I Change My Clothes?" is truly powerful. I do believe this is the first time I've heard it. Is it over analyzing to think that this cry from the heart is asking, When can I start anew, leave behind old troubles and miseries?
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 10:27:23 AM
Not at all Richard! I agree with the reading.
Brian D 10:29:46 AM
Great sound on that latter era Willie McTell
Richard of Rocky Hill 10:34:00 AM
I thought the movie Sinners was tremendous. As an enthusiast of the classic horror movies, I relished its take on the vampire mythos. Its reconstruction of everyday life in the Deep South of the 1930s and empathetic depiction of the main characters powerfully set up the supernatural terrors and made us care about those characters' fates. And the music is a huge part of that.
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 10:37:39 AM
I also enjoyed it a lot -- great music in the film as you say
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 10:38:21 AM
I'm happy that it connected with a broad audience
Richard of Rocky Hill 10:43:19 AM
Two small and construction critiques: A useful protocol of the classic vampire movies has been an explanation in early dialogue re: the creatures' powers and weaknesses. Here, spelling out more clearly the ancient legend that vampires must be invited in by a home's dweller before they can cross the threshold would have made a major plot element a bit clearer. Also, I wasn't too sure about the back-to-back shootout double climaxes. But, yes, its broad-audience success is awesome.
Richard of Rocky Hill 10:45:15 AM
Louis Prima RULES!!!

@ Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) That's a tremendous ~ really landmark ~ New York Times article, bringing long overdue recognition to some woefully undercelebrated figures in American roots music. Thanks for the reminder and the link.
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 11:21:27 AM
More on Sister Terrell: https://www.npr.org/2006/09/29/6168153/sister-terrell-a-crooner-on-the-amen-corner
Brian D 11:39:02 AM
Familiar melody on the Blind Blake "Georgia Bound" song. Used on others (R Johnson "From Four Until Late" for one)
Brian D 11:40:25 AM
Jimmy Rodgers loved that melody too
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 11:40:28 AM
Was thinking that, Brian. I've played that rendition before on my show but Blake never ceases to impress me with the intricacy and rhythmic inventiveness of those guitar fills.
Brian D 11:40:46 AM
Yeah Blake had such great little phrases
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 11:41:39 AM
Unlike Iggy Pop, it seems, Blind Boy Fuller does NOT want to be your dog
Brian D 11:42:33 AM
Blind Boy Fuller and the bass note "responses" and then those higher string bends. Great use of the guitar as a full instrument. Important in the one person band approach. Or duos etc
Brian D 11:43:08 AM
Yeah Iggy and the Stooges! A classic.
Brian D 11:43:58 AM
Tell 'em Minnie!
Richard of Rocky Hill 11:45:05 AM
@ Brian D Great comments on Blind Boy Fuller's guitar stylings, thanks for the insights (in-hears?)
Brian D 11:46:21 AM
I love the fingerpickers that have those interesting interplays between the bass notes and higher strings yep
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 11:47:28 AM
Very unique dissonance in the bass on this one. Presumably meant to sound like a bullfrog.
Brian D 11:47:35 AM
Just about to say that!
Brian D 11:48:17 AM
The buzzing thumping low dissonance.
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 11:49:54 AM
Nice harmonics on the finish there. They definitely went for something different.
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 11:51:06 AM
By the way, Minnie's sometime husband Kansas Joe McCoy was guitar on Junk Outta You
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 11:52:19 AM
Joe McCoy was guitar and vocals on the Harlem Hamfats number played near the top of the program
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 11:53:33 AM
This is another melody that was used widely. Skip James recorded it as "Crow Jane"
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 11:54:38 AM
Matter of fact -- let's hear that next
David Shortell 11:59:28 AM
Zap #11 was my introduction to Charlie Patton: https://www.reddit.com/r/blues/comments/1hemquz/charley_patton_comic_by_robert_crumb/#lightbox
Brian D 11:59:59 AM
Thought that was Jump in the Line
Richard of Rocky Hill 12:00:07 PM
I love these tracks from the 1960s sessions on the album Skip James Today! Produced by blues, bluegrass & folk enthusiast/scholar Richard K. "Dick" Spottswood, bless him.
Richard of Rocky Hill 12:00:29 PM
And Blues Off the Record for playing all these!
