Read "How Music Got Free ...." by Stephen Witt. Great book w/alternating chapters on 1) the crafty workers at the CD factory in North Carolina who smuggled out CDs before the official release, ripped them and uploaded them to the net via the primitive slow... chat room methods of the day; 2) the history of the sound audiologists teams that created the mp3 codec and finally 3) the music industry and their pathetic dropping the many many balls misunderstanding of what was going on.

Brian, that book sounds super fascinating. I've read some about the origin of the MP3 (there's a great, maybe a bit academic, book by Jonathan Sterne called "MP3: The Meaning of a Format" that talks about all things MP3)

I also remember all the industry lawsuits against undergrads for file sharing. It was a little disconcerting and totally misguided being an undergrad in those days

Yes! All the interwoven chapter subjects are fascinating. And I now see that there is a documentary series (from last year) same title based on the book (How Music Got Free)

The secret to getting the CDs past the metal detectors at the factory was so cool.... heh I will leave that spoiler out of the chat

I am maybe on my 3rd or 4th re-read of that book. That and the great small little book on MTV "I Want My MTV" are 2 that I can go back to again and again.

Another good one that I need to re-read is "Narconomics: How To Run a Drug Cartel". Super informative. As was Dopesick.

And for my other must re-reads list I am 2-3 re-reads into all of Peter Hook's books ( aka Hooky - bass man for Joy Division / New Order). He has one on J.D., one on N.O. and one on the Hacienda club in Madchester. He weaves some great yarns. Highly recommend all 3.
