Read "How Music Got Free ...." by Stephen Witt. Great book w/alternating chapters on 1) the crafty workers at the CD factory in North Carolina who smuggled out CDs before the official release, ripped them and uploaded them to the net via the primitive slow... chat room methods of the day; 2) the history of the sound audiologists teams that created the mp3 codec and finally 3) the music industry and their pathetic dropping the many many balls misunderstanding of what was going on.

Brian, that book sounds super fascinating. I've read some about the origin of the MP3 (there's a great, maybe a bit academic, book by Jonathan Sterne called "MP3: The Meaning of a Format" that talks about all things MP3)

And for my other must re-reads list I am 2-3 re-reads into all of Peter Hook's books ( aka Hooky - bass man for Joy Division / New Order). He has one on J.D., one on N.O. and one on the Hacienda club in Madchester. He weaves some great yarns. Highly recommend all 3.
