Are big, framed pictures that are stitched yarn referred to as needle point? Stupid question I know. Sort of a stitched version of paint by numbers I guess.

Excellent question! Needlepoint is typically done on what is called mono canvas. It can be tent stitch or can be decorative embroidery stitches. The key thing is the canvas used.

Currently the trend in needlepoint is to do it on painted canvases basically making it paint-by-numbers with thread. Generally the whole canvas is covered as opposed to cross-stitch
