Habitat Enrichment

Music

With Krista

Habitat Enrichment is the concept of introducing novelty to an animal's enclosure to keep it from getting bored or sad. Let me play you something fun. Genres span world and time, just like a cat with a box to play in.

Some specialties you can usually hear a little on my show: Luk Thuong, 60s crooners, cow punk, and synthwave. If you don't like the song currently playing, wait approximately 2 minutes for something else!

i miss leaving may baskets at people's doors and then running away
Brian D 10:13:35 AM
Hi Krista was there a Nick Drake in there somewhere....?
Brian D 10:17:42 AM
Singing? AND Dancing!!??? Could lead to games of chance. Better nip that in the bud.
Krista (host) 10:20:54 AM
generosity without expectation of return?? that sounds awfully close to solidarity to me!
Bike R 10:26:04 AM
Yup. Just like a Philly dog!
Bike R 10:26:23 AM
(... cats are awesome too)
Krista (host) 10:27:31 AM
last summer during one of the hottest days of the year we took a walk and saw only Philly's most heat resistant dogs out and about. It was a parade of greyhounds, whippets and Salukis
Krista (host) 10:28:19 AM
we even saw a Xolo out! fabulous Philly dog!
Brian D 10:30:18 AM
Bernie Doodles are the rock stars. They have a strut. Get all kinds of fans seeking autographs.
Krista (host) 10:34:29 AM
the poodle being mixed with all kinds of breeds always cracks me up. I loved the money they brought me as a dog groomer and the poodle genes would sometimes turn normally dimwitted breeds into unexpected geniuses. My favorite was a Pure Evil Dachsund Doodle who decided on sight a person's vibes and could not be dissuaded. He liked me, thankfully, but his owner had to pay a premium for him to be alone in the salon because of his bloodthirst.
Brian D 10:38:24 AM

1 of the few times I watched People's Court w/Judge Wapner way back when had a case where one big dog owner was seeking compensation from a neighbor with adjoining chain link fence who had a male Chihuahua. The big dog owner had video cam footage (headphones kids) of the Chihuahua with an impressive acrobatic upside down handstand approach who successfully made contact with his big dog mate on the other side of the chain link fence. Impressive flexible skills.
Brian D 10:43:20 AM
Compensation to help with the big dog's litter that is.
Krista (host) 10:43:35 AM
LOL Brian, never underestimate a Chihuahua
Richard of Rocky Hill 10:43:53 AM
@ Krista (host) I just loved your personal history of May baskets. It certainly seems a tradition as ancient as the May pole. Speaking of which ... my Mom used to tell me that as a schoolgirl in north-central NJ (this would be mid-1920s) they always had a May pole, danced around it, and sang this song: "Spring is here, the earth rejoices/ Mature runs with smiles to greet her? Happy Spring! Happy Spring!" Alas, I've never been able to find that ditty and its history despite much google-ing. ;-))
Brian D 10:44:45 AM
Was there another song after MarKeys about working in a (somewhere...)???
Krista (host) 10:46:46 AM
ah, yes, Brian that was Chico Leverett. Work, Work.
Bike R 10:47:22 AM
@Krista Poodles are too smart for their own good ;)
Brian D 10:54:53 AM
Good old profession
Brian D 10:55:36 AM
No, a pocketbook is a purse
Brian D 10:56:44 AM
Billfold is a wallet yes but it sounds like something a grand or great grand parent would say yes
Brian D 10:57:16 AM
I have never heard such a thing. That Delco place is strange. Pocketbook is a purse. Nope
Bud Burroughs 10:57:32 AM
To my Lehigh Valley relatives, a pocketbook was always a purse. Midwesterners are weird. They probably called soda "pop"
Krista (host) 10:57:43 AM
not probably, bud, definitely
Krista (host) 10:57:49 AM
better than Woder
Brian D 10:58:19 AM
Thank you Bud. Pocketbook = purse is the main percentage accepted meaning. Disregard that Delco nonsense Krista.
Bike R 10:58:41 AM
It's pop, not soda, bud
Bud Burroughs 10:59:03 AM
Philadelphia is the birthplace of America. Therefore, my Philadelphia accent is standard American English. It's pronounced "wooder."
Brian D 11:00:02 AM
Relatives from the midwest and from western Pennsylvania all called a purse a pocketbook. None thought it strange
Krista (host) 11:01:44 AM
I had zero idea what a pocketbook was at all
Brian D 11:03:16 AM
Yeah it is a misnomer of sorts. Not a book. It may have pockets yes. Pocket bag more like
Richard of Rocky Hill 11:04:31 AM
@ Brian D Yes, same here in old NJ useage, pocket book = purse. Billfold, definitely = wallet.
Bud Burroughs 11:05:24 AM
Billfold at least makes sense - it has folded bills in it. I've honestly never understood how "pocketbook" came to mean "purse."
Brian D 11:06:29 AM
Now on another front... the product name Trapper Keeper from Mead. That was well named for function/purpose
Krista (host) 11:07:35 AM
I always wanted the Lisa Frank one but by the time I had Lisa Frank money after working the summer on the farm, Lisa Frank was no longer in
Brian D 11:07:41 AM
Read an article that mentioned that product recently. The often told tale of someone that had their idea stolen by another person.
Bud Burroughs 11:07:41 AM
Found this somewhat unsatisfying etymology: 1610s, originally a small book meant to be carried in one's pocket, from pocket (n.) + book (n.). Meaning "a flexible booklike leather folder for papers, bills, etc." is from 1722. Meaning "a woman's purse" is from 1816.
Brian D 11:09:10 AM
It wasn't just about the Trapper Keeper from what I recall on that article... the person that laid claim to the idea and took credit basically had some sociopathic or whatever trait where he just appropriated stories, lives, ideas, tales from other peoples' lives around him especially work related people.
Bike R 11:10:19 AM
A pocketbook is the perfect thing for carrying pop.
Brian D 11:11:10 AM
pop it book... re-seal the cap well lest ye get yer bills all stuck w sugar water
Richard of Rocky Hill 11:11:15 AM
@ Bud Burroughs That "pocketbook" etymology rings true to me, thanks.
Brian D 11:14:47 AM

Often mistakenly called "large male mosquitos", the mayflies. Big ol framework construction. Impressive structure the mayfly body.
Brian D 11:18:50 AM
Cranefly too ... they get mistakenly called mosquitos
Bud Burroughs 11:19:30 AM
I haven't managed to convince my wife that they aren't "big mosquitos." :)
Krista (host) 11:20:43 AM
thanks tb!
Brian D 11:20:49 AM

John Coffey 11:32:21 AM
Hi Krista, digging this Perturbator. It makes want to outside and do some yard work.
John Coffey 11:35:09 AM
And a quick Delco question. I knew you’ve mentioned your husband is from Philly but curious what part. I’m Delco first 10 years of my life, Drexel Hill.
Krista (host) 11:39:28 AM
Hey John, he moved around a lot, Media- Flint- University City. His mom is from South Philly and his parents live in the graduate hospital neighborhood
John Coffey 11:42:58 AM
Thanks Krista, University City for me since 1987. And shopping Baltimore Pike in Delco all this time too.
Brian D 11:54:13 AM
Great take on the John Lee Hooker classic Tupelo.
