A couple of months before Woodstock, Sly & the Family Stone kicked off the Harlem Cultural Festival at Mount Morris Park (as seen in “Summer of Soul” which you can watch on Disney+). For some reason the NYPD was not present that opening Sunday, so Black Panthers provided security.
