U. Srinivas (28 February 1969 - 19 September 2014) was a child prodigy. He was the first musician to use the electric mandolin in Carnatic music. He modified the electric western instrument, using five single strings instead of the traditional four doubled strings to suit the Carnatic pitch, raga system, and especially "gamakas", or nuanced oscillations. He developing a phenomenal style of playing entirely his own, and astonishingly, on an instrument that had never been played in the rigorous and difficult Carnatic style before.

Sangeet Team (host) 9:00:21 AM
Welcome to Sangeet. Dave with you until 12:00 this morning.
Apocalyptic Roffle... 9:04:24 AM
Gosh, this opening theme is a thing. Love it! I just got as the simpleton I am that I have been here before.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:05:20 AM
Opening theme? What the intro loop or the 5 DJs announcement?
Apocalyptic Roffle... 9:05:37 AM
Yup
Sangeet Team (host) 9:05:47 AM
which? both?
Apocalyptic Roffle... 9:06:49 AM
I honestly don't know if I can distinguish.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:07:01 AM
the violin loop is what All India Radio plays several minutes before they start each broadcast day. Or at least they used to years ago. not sure if they still do
Apocalyptic Roffle... 9:11:54 AM
Oh wow! I love they have a signature. I grew up in NJ, so alien is pretty much everything I guess.
Apocalyptic Roffle... 9:12:55 AM
Even tough I was also raised all about.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:12:57 AM
similar to those international short wave stations that play looped music when they aren't broadcasting content
Apocalyptic Roffle... 9:13:58 AM
So ther is a short wave buy in?
Sangeet Team (host) 9:14:58 AM
the transmissions are received free of charge
Apocalyptic Roffle... 9:17:05 AM
I left a good short wave receiver/transmitter in Texas long ago sadly.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:17:39 AM
next to the cello in the attic?
Apocalyptic Roffle... 9:17:55 AM
If only I had a class C license.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:18:18 AM
the internet probably has made short wave obsolete
Apocalyptic Roffle... 9:18:43 AM
I still have that cello. Sorta
Apocalyptic Roffle... 9:19:50 AM
The internet makes a bunch of stuff obsolete for sure.
Apocalyptic Roffle... 9:21:48 AM
You are too smart for the room friend.
Apocalyptic Roffle... 9:22:53 AM
This vocal!
Sangeet Team (host) 9:23:09 AM
4 and a half octave range
Apocalyptic Roffle... 9:23:54 AM
Fucking insane.
Apocalyptic Roffle... 9:24:16 AM
As they say in France.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:24:28 AM
they're not wrong
Karen Swaine 9:34:42 AM
wow this sounds so much like eastern euro Roma music... well and didn't the gypsies come out of India? ofcourse! I love this!
Karen Swaine 9:35:33 AM
I meant balkan when I said eastern euro
Sangeet Team (host) 9:37:38 AM
Good morning, Karen S. I have read that the Roma community has roots in India
Sangeet Team (host) 9:38:33 AM
not just the music, but elements of their clothing are reminiscent of India
Karen Swaine 9:38:34 AM
have you seen the film Latcho Drom?
Sangeet Team (host) 9:38:43 AM
I have not
Sangeet Team (host) 9:42:58 AM
but it looks interesting. Yes, Rajasthan itself may have been the roots
Karen Swaine 9:43:26 AM
you absolutely must see this documentary about the movement (so to speak) of people from north India west - it's really all about the music & it's simply splendid!! I am an ethnomusic fan and have a decent collection of LPs CDs and even a few DVDs that support m y habit, lol..
Sangeet Team (host) 9:44:46 AM
well you found the right radio station!
Karen Swaine 9:48:37 AM
Sangeet, yes, we are regular listeners, but are there other "ethno" music shows on prb?
Sangeet Team (host) 9:53:56 AM
There was "The World's Fare" until DJ Pangaeo passed away a couple of years ago. But many of the shows on WPRB mix in some international music. Favorite labels include Analog Africa and the Ethiopiques series.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:54:29 AM
and Sahel sounds
Sangeet Team (host) 10:02:27 AM
but a specialized "ethno" show, not at this time. "Groove" woith DJ Scheki (Sunday 9:00 a.m.) plays a lot from South Africa, but it is more hiphop than traditional
Karen Swaine 10:25:58 AM
we remember DJ Pangaeo. i'm not into hip-hop altho there are rare exceptions. my daughter was very involved with the NYC hip-hop scene in the 80s and got us Tix for a performance downtown to hear Grandmaster Flash of "The Message" and Run DMC. I'm an 82 yr old grandmother now, lol.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:32:17 AM
Wow! I can imagine you felt a bit out of place, might have gotten a few curious stares
Karen Swaine 10:33:00 AM
Surbahar - saw Imrat Khan perform on Surbahar in Amsterdam in the late 70s -- he performed with both his sons once. I love instruments that produce those low register notes. ok, enough chatting.. we're enjoying today's show.. the Bombay Sisters are so tuned into each other their unison singing is like one voice.. I love it.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:33:46 AM
thanks for joining the chat! it's good to get the sense that folks are listening
Karen Swaine 10:35:59 AM
hahaha wait a sec - this was around 1983... so I was only 40. ahh.. nostalgia
Karen Swaine 11:44:39 AM
uhhh...this may be the weirdest thing you've ever played on Sangeet.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:47:47 AM
you're probably right
Apocalyptic Roffle... 11:52:31 AM
A listening treat! Thanks again Sangeet Team! Another enrichment experience as always on a Saturday morning. Lovely chill. Be good, be safe, be always.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:52:52 AM
Thanks for enduring, Roffle
Apocalyptic Roffle... 11:54:13 AM
Mileage is my thing. :)
Apocalyptic Roffle... 11:56:42 AM
Buddy Rich I simply did not expect though. Fantastic.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:56:56 AM
he had skills for sure
Karen Swaine 12:01:03 PM
Harvey and I thank you for the great variety of music this morning.
Sangeet Team (host) 12:01:13 PM
thanks for listening
