37. Storytime, gather round

Songs tell stories, from the Appalachian mountains to Broadway. Why sing instead of recite poetry? Are musicals that different from sea shanties?

some, but not all!
DJ Jupiter (host) 3:11:38 PM
we do have a very popular sea shanty coming up though haha
michael gudgeon 3:15:50 PM
y0y0!
DJ Jupiter (host) 3:16:16 PM
hello!! thanks for tuning in
DJ Jupiter (host) 3:17:12 PM
Irish folk songs are great at telling sad stories in a very jaunty way
Richard of Rocky Hill 3:18:26 PM
@ DJ Jupiter (host) Enjoying the Scots-Irish segment. "Step It Out Mary" shows that the tyranny of arranged marriages was certainly known ~and protested by ~ folk music traditions.
Coffeemancer 3:19:24 PM
Sea Shanty 2?

Bud Burroughs 3:20:26 PM
Loving the trad stuff today!
DJ Jupiter (host) 3:23:52 PM
@Richard of Rocky Hill, yes! discontent with the law and folk songs have always been closely intertwined, especially since it was very hard to trace back to the original source
DJ Jupiter (host) 3:24:01 PM
thanks bud! Glad you're enjoying it
Bud Burroughs 3:28:26 PM
It's always cool to listen to Scots/Irish and American trad music in close proximity. You can really hear the similarities.
DJ Jupiter (host) 3:31:10 PM
agree! story telling and music seems to be a pretty universal language

Richard of Rocky Hill 3:37:15 PM
I love Doc Watson's music, and the Smithsonian/Folkways recording with him and kinfolk, recorded at home in North Carolina, is a classic.
Richard of Rocky Hill 3:43:27 PM
I have ti also really thank you for playing "Northwest Passage." I'd never heard it before, but it's clearly about Sir John Franklin's ill-fated ship expedition of 1845-47 to try and find a northwest sailing passage shortcut from the Atlantic through the Canadian artic region to the Pacific.
DJ Jupiter (host) 3:47:37 PM
wow that's very impressive! I have to look up what a lot of the songs are about, but you are absolutely locked in!
DJ Jupiter (host) 3:48:07 PM
one of the many reasons the PRB community is so near and dear to my <3
Richard of Rocky Hill 4:04:29 PM
@ DJ Jupiter (host) Thanks for the kind words. I like to share what I know, because I keep learning so much ~ and hearing awesome new (to me) music ~ on WPRB. :-D
michael gudgeon 4:05:13 PM
did you like the ballad of songbirds and snakes ( the movie) !?
DJ Jupiter (host) 4:06:24 PM
@Richard of Rocky Hill, ofc! always appreciate the sharing of knowledge :)
DJ Jupiter (host) 4:06:50 PM
@Michael gudgeon, I actually never saw the movie, but I enjoyed the book!
DJ Jupiter (host) 4:07:34 PM
do you recommend the movie? I know that the movie increased sympathy for President snow bc people found the actor attractive haha
Richard of Rocky Hill 4:08:56 PM
Re: Folkways Records, it was founded in New York City by Moses "Moe" Asch in 1948. Asch was recording and producing world music before that term was even invented. Folkways albums typically came with richly researched booklets about the music and the people who created it. Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly and Peter Seeger were among Folkway's most famous perofmers. When Moe was ready to retire in the mid-1980s, he hoped to sell the label plus its invaluable archives in one transaction, not piecemeal.
Ossy 4:09:33 PM
Jupiter - Nice nice, Sara Beatles song sounded like music from a Disney Princess and Glinda( Wicked )
DJ Jupiter (host) 4:10:27 PM
ooo I can definitely hear that
DJ Jupiter (host) 4:11:09 PM
especially with the dead parent motif that seems to be an almost integral part of most Disney movies
Richard of Rocky Hill 4:11:51 PM
Ralph Rinzler, the far-sighted first director of the Smithsonian Division of Folklife & Cultural Studies gathered the funding to acquire Moe's holdings. And it continues today as the very successful non-profit label Smithsonian/Folklife, releasing excellent new recordings every year. I'm writing Ralph's biography, so it's a topic dear to me ~ so glad you featured it today!
DJ Jupiter (host) 4:12:06 PM
(referring to Dead Mom song)
DJ Jupiter (host) 4:12:35 PM
WOAH! Writing Ralphs biography is super cool! Props to you!!!
Richard of Rocky Hill 4:12:53 PM
OOPS! Correction: it's the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife & Cultural Heritage.
Richard of Rocky Hill 4:13:56 PM
@ DJ Jupiter (host) Thanks for the encouragement, much appreciated!
Richard of Rocky Hill 4:14:33 PM
Wiki has a good entry on Folkways: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folkways_Records
DJ Jupiter (host) 4:15:48 PM
I have so much love for the smithsonian
michael gudgeon 4:16:28 PM
I personally liked it, i also enjoy the movie as well, yes he is quite attractive, and paint him out to be a good guy in some ways. Was the book like that as well?
DJ Jupiter (host) 4:19:18 PM
no, I think the book does humanize him more than in the original hunger games series, with his background, but he isn't made to be the good guy
michael gudgeon 4:22:43 PM
yeah i mean, it's tough to root for him truly cause you know what he becomes, but he has a run there in the middle of it where he's a good guy, considering circumstances, he totally shows his true colors by the end. +
DJ Jupiter (host) 4:30:22 PM
agree, it was sad to see how different everything could have been and also knowing what would end up happening
DJ Jupiter (host) 4:30:40 PM
Tradition is one of my favorite songs from a musical!
Richard of Rocky Hill 4:40:55 PM
@ DJ Jupiter (host) What a fab, funny, touching and totally seamless Broadway medley you've created! Major enjoyment ... :-D
DJ Jupiter (host) 4:41:55 PM
yippee!! glad to hear it
Richard of Rocky Hill 4:44:16 PM
Hey, I'm glad I'm hearing Basement Vibezzz this afternoon.
