Re: "The day we said goodbye" ... it's so lovely and poignant ... but as she sang about `I go back to the old cafe and the young lovers there remind me of us '... I recalled the witty & wise Roman poet Ovid's book "The Remedies for Love" in which he acts as the reader's physician, curing their broken heart. His Rx #1 is "Stay busy!" but Rx #2 is .. "DON'T go back to the old cafes OR listen to the old songs! You'll relapse!" Wise counsel !! I've been there, I know ... :-((
Cynthia (host) 5:53:49 PM
relapsing in love, what an interesting concept! I definitely see how its possible, but it is an interesting phrase
Richard of Rocky Hill 6:14:46 PM
It's the last chapter of Ovid's "The Art of Love" ~ which is G-rated, don't worry. (This is the social art of love, flirting and courtship. You're on your own for the more intimate activities!) In the Rolfe Humphries translation "relapsing" isn't specifically used. However, Ovid specifically advises that ...
Cynthia (host) 6:16:49 PM
hmmmm, facinating!! ill have to add it to my to be read
Richard of Rocky Hill 6:17:30 PM
... you go on a long trip to get away from all the places that will remind you of the person who broke your heart. AND stay away for a long time: "If you return too soon, before your mind has recovered, Love will attack you again, fierce with implacable arms."
Richard of Rocky Hill 6:20:06 PM
So, Ovid the Love Physician would really Tsk tsk! about the singer going back to the old cafe!
Cynthia (host) 6:20:09 PM
"Love" with a capital letter, along with the personification of it suggests the emotion is a god like figure in your life, making decisions for you, carving out your destiny unless you comply to ovid's advice
Richard of Rocky Hill 6:24:29 PM
Yes! That's exactly the kind of delightful and spot-on poetic metaphors Ovid uses! How not to worship gods of Love like Cupid or Venus who are out to captrue and enslave you. You'll enjoy the Art of Love with The Remedies for Love.it. Just hope you never need to use his advice! But if you do, it really helps.
Cynthia (host) 6:27:02 PM
i will keep it in mind in case of a horrible heartbreak i hope to never experience !!
Richard of Rocky Hill 6:27:37 PM
One other awesome aspect .. how much the ancient Romans were really like us, wearing the latest fashions and hairstyles, going to the theater or trendy restaurants ... even texting (in the form of servants taking your notes across town to your beloved and returning with replies. Enjoy!
Richard of Rocky Hill 6:28:43 PM
Just as I'm enjoying tonight's swinging playlist. Thanks again, Cynthia, Long Live Lady Love!
Cynthia (host) 6:30:03 PM
thanks for tuning in richard! i'm always up for the evening intellectual discussion
sean burns 6:58:54 PM
Once again a quite sophisticated accompaniment for the dinner time hour. Thanks for the great programming!
Cynthia (host) 7:01:08 PM
thanks sean! maybe next week will be more silly and fun - depends how the week goes....
sean burns 7:04:05 PM
I only made a big pot of vegetable soup this evening... I felt underdressed preparing such a pedestrian homey meal. So I put on a bow tie while I was making it
sean burns 7:05:41 PM
Reading your comments, Richard, quite interesting. That guy Ovid seems to have something on the ball... I guess that's why he's still famous 2000 years later
sean burns 7:07:22 PM
I have a feeling if you go back 3000 years before the Romans you will find the same definitively human concerns such as fashion, personal decoration, etc.
Cynthia (host) 7:09:10 PM
ughh but i love a big pot of vegetable soup + they would serve that at olive garden aka the best jazz music restaurant establishment in my opinion
Richard of Rocky Hill 7:27:11 PM
@ sean burns True. But if you've never visited Pompeii, and have the opportunity and means, definitely go. You'll see what I mean about us and the Romans in the surviving cafes, restaurants, theatres, and especially the elegant homes with their atriums, in-house gardens, frescos and mosaics ... it all seems somehow so very modern ... and much closer to us than we are to, say, the chronologically more recent Tudors or Victorians.
Cynthia (host) 7:29:17 PM
wonder if in another 3000 years there will be another adjacent society making the same conclusions we are??
Richard of Rocky Hill 7:37:23 PM
I hope in 3000 years there will be 1) enough remnants of us left to rediscover, and 2) a society organized enough to discover them!
Richard of Rocky Hill 7:39:29 PM
I had no idea that Everything But the Girl recorded "Corcovado," and such a fine rendition.
Cynthia (host) 7:40:17 PM
its a great song i was so happy to find it !!
sean burns 7:42:42 PM
I agree with you on the Romans being closer to us in their actions and interests, by the time of the tutors or the Victorian era there were so many layers of of ritual, clothing and adornment, culture. The Romans didn't seem so affected
Richard of Rocky Hill 7:53:09 PM
Yes, well observed!
Richard of Rocky Hill 7:55:09 PM
@ Cynthia (host) Thanks for another fab three hours. Glad you have this slot. Have a great rest of the evening everyone.
Cynthia (host) 7:57:04 PM
thank you richard, have a great evening!!
