Set Break: We know so much about E. coli, and so little about everyone else

An overwhelming majority of bacterial species have never been the subject of a scientific paper

What does it do to us to write 50% of bacteria papers on just 10 species??

Only a small portion of bacterial species get scientific attention

Set Break: Measuring ice flow at temperatures just below cooling

Ice flows when forced, despite it being a solid. But we make assumptions about how fast it ramps up that haven't been well measured

Scientists found that ice, when not too cold, melts at grain boundaries and helps the ice slide more easily than thought

This info is super important for predicting how glaciers will move when supporting themselves above the sea

Set Break: Measuring neurons in freely moving beings: a truer picture of brain activity

Neural activity in freely moving monkeys was more complex, with the same neurons firing differently for the same tasks vs. restrained monkeys

Our neurons are "densely coded," with the same neuronal populations shared by multiple behaviors, but freely moving monkeys had more "sparse" neurons that seemed selected for individual actions

Dale Hazelton 7:03:58 AM
good morning.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:05:44 AM
hello Dale, hello all. Nice to be with you this morning!
Dale Hazelton 7:21:11 AM
this grey city is a trip!
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:31:43 AM
I'm glad you liked it too! A great weird
Dale Hazelton 7:33:20 AM
we have so many critters fighting for supremacy in our bodies, it's crazy.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:34:27 AM
And helping us too! Competition and also raucous joy, in its way
Mark Sutz 7:40:35 AM
Love your show. Is yours just a temporary hiatus, I hope? Science remains the great sanity purveyor the world always needs.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:42:34 AM
Thank you, Mark! Yes, I will be on the air here and there through the spring, and hopefully back full time in the summer. I am glad you find my show helpful for your sanity!
Dale Hazelton 7:58:02 AM
is this why the frozen ice in my bird bath looks like a small model of mountains and valleys?
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:03:16 AM
I am so curious what you mean! Maybe it is related. The surface is just uneven?
Dale Hazelton 8:05:17 AM
yes, it never freezes like an ice rink would, it's always incredibly rough. it could have to do with all the contamination in the water, dirt, seeds, bird poo etc.
Big Jarret 8:06:23 AM
DJ AskTheQuestion, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your show for the past season. I’m saddened you won’t be on to keep me company on my morning commute, but I look forward to catching you on the air in the future!
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:06:29 AM
Maybe it freezes in the wind, with ripples building up on points that happen to be higher? or the freezing and thawing cycles lead to buildup in some areas?
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:06:55 AM
Big Jarret, that is so nice to hear! Thank you so much for your regular listenership!
Dale Hazelton 8:07:22 AM
i once read that window glass is not a solid, it's a slow-moving liquid with an incredibly long 'relaxation time.' hence why old windows have wavy glass.
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:10:53 AM
https://ceramics.org/ceramic-tech-today/glass-viscosity-calculations-definitively-debunk-the-myth-of-observable-flow-in-medieval-windows/
Dale Hazelton 8:14:50 AM
well, that shoots that down. and i don't have a billion years to see if it proves itself out.
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:15:46 AM
Who does? Solids and liquids are a lie but some things move so slowly that you can pretty much trust them
Richard of Rocky Hill 8:37:39 AM
@ DJ AskTheQuestion I'll add my thanks & kudos! I've especially enjoyed and benefited from your installments on invasive species, since I write about the issue(s) a lot for local newspapers.
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:40:20 AM
I'm so glad that you've been a part of the show, Richard! Thank you for tuning in. I'm glad we can act in harmony to promote native wildlife.
Emily Borowski 9:22:09 AM
My prediction for the controversial plant of the week is eucalyptus :0
Emily Borowski 9:38:56 AM
dang im gonna start thinking about what i want to plant this year
Dale Hazelton 9:39:55 AM
i like putting kitchen waste in the ground to see what happens. the celery stump turns into this wonderfully tall spindly plant that caterpillars like to munch on.
Dale Hazelton 9:41:07 AM
would ike to attempt grafting as well as i have a camperdown elm in my yard and that's the only way it can come to exist.
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:42:03 AM
Eucalyptus is also good! I always find the scent mysterious, I'm not sure in a good way or not
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:42:17 AM
That's exactly my feeling too: I always feel too late for seed starting! somehow
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:42:23 AM
Then i forget to water t hem....
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:42:47 AM
The amount volunteer plants I get from t he compost, happily growing next to my struggling seedlings, is always fun but bewildering
TAndy 9:49:32 AM
Gonna miss waking up to your show, DJ ATQ! I'm looking forward to hearing you again later this year :]
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:50:45 AM
Aww thanks TAndy! I have loved doing this show, I am looking forward to more science on the radio soon :)

im gonna miss this show so much, im happy to hear you'll be on in the summer. Hopefully we will have updates on how you and your plants and expirments are doing!
Dale Hazelton 9:53:53 AM
good topics....good music. i'll miss the show as well. good luck on your endeavors!
Richard of Rocky Hill 9:59:09 AM
Thanks again. Best wishes for your plasma research!
