I am so curious what you mean! Maybe it is related. The surface is just uneven?

yes, it never freezes like an ice rink would, it's always incredibly rough. it could have to do with all the contamination in the water, dirt, seeds, bird poo etc.

Maybe it freezes in the wind, with ripples building up on points that happen to be higher? or the freezing and thawing cycles lead to buildup in some areas?

dang im gonna start thinking about what i want to plant this year

i like putting kitchen waste in the ground to see what happens. the celery stump turns into this wonderfully tall spindly plant that caterpillars like to munch on.

would ike to attempt grafting as well as i have a camperdown elm in my yard and that's the only way it can come to exist.

Eucalyptus is also good! I always find the scent mysterious, I'm not sure in a good way or not

That's exactly my feeling too: I always feel too late for seed starting! somehow

Then i forget to water t hem....

The amount volunteer plants I get from t he compost, happily growing next to my struggling seedlings, is always fun but bewildering
