Set Break: Why was 2023 so hot?? It could have been El Niño, but low cloud cover was also a factor

Low-cloud disappearance in the tropics and northern Hemisphere seemed to account for at least 0.2 degrees C of how hot 2023 was

And low cloud cover might be a trend that persists into the future, leading to a warmer Earth faster

Set Break: How do little frogs skitter across the water? Jump off the surface of the water without sinking?

Actually, they do sink! they jump from under the water. So we have now captured in high-speed 500fps cameras

A fast-moving belly flop: Researchers unveil the unique skills of cricket frogs

Kinematics of interfacial locomotion in the cricket frog Acris crepitans. Colors correspond to takeoff (green), aerial (purple), re-entry (yellow) and recovery (red) phases. Data in A and C are from a single trial; data from other trials are provided in the supplementary information (Supplementary Materials and Methods, ‘Figure collection S3’, see figshare doi:10.6084/m9.figshare.20720935). (A) Representation of postural changes in a frog (mass 1.09 g; snout–vent length, SVL, 21.4 mm) during one full cycle of interfacial locomotion, shown in side view. The inset boxes show details obscured from view during phases with little translation. (B) Height versus range for the 11 complete jumps in the dataset. (C) Kinematics of one representative cycle versus time. Data represent the position of the center of the frog's body, determined by the watershed method (see Fig. S2). The background is blue whenever the frog's body center is under the water surface. Phase transitions between take-off, aerial, re-entry and recovery are marked by vertical dashed lines. Body angle was calculated relative to the horizontal water surface; the black icons below the trace provide a visual representation of the angle for select times. In the gait diagram, bars represent times when the forelimbs (FL) or hindlimbs (HL) were moving away from (extension) or toward (retraction) the body. The transition region indicates when the hindlimbs were switching from retraction to extension, and as such the state was hard to manually grade.

Well come to all of ye
Dale Hazelton 7:22:08 AM
good morning.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:31:53 AM
Hi Dale! Happy 2025
𓀠 ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 𓀡 7:32:12 AM
NASA could use lights like on miners’ helmets to see in the darkness. Problem solved
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:32:59 AM
But then when they pop into the light they get blinded! Unless the headlamps are a similar brightness to the sun
Dale Hazelton 7:34:11 AM
dumb question - is it colder at the moon's south pole than the moon's equator? shouldn't we vacation where the clime is balmier?
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:35:16 AM
My immediate guess is because there's no atmosphere, there's no meaningful air temperature. All the heat comes from radiation from the sun. And since we need life support and climate control even within space suits, you can tune that suit to a balmy 72 wherever you are
𓀠 ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 𓀡 7:58:23 AM
I had interpreted “depose “ as the legal term for questioning with the intent of tying things up with litigation.
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:05:21 AM
That is interesting! I can see why that would make sense. But so, very forcefully, does definition #1: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=depose
Dale Hazelton 8:10:19 AM
heron oblivion blew me away when i first heard them. it was like jacqui mcshea from pentangle joined a really cool psych outfit.
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:10:44 AM
Yessss I was thrilled to stumble upon this again this morning. I haven't heard it in a while
Amy Lee 8:37:16 AM
Love Merle...and Lefty.
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:39:31 AM
The more the better! Welcome, Amy
Dale Hazelton 9:21:03 AM
i was thinking their mass isn't enough to break the surface tension of the water....but it's persistence of vision that make it look like they aren't sinking (kind of).
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:23:28 AM
I agree! Once you know they're really sinking, I think you can see it in the real-time videos. But it's easy to imagine they're floating across the water, indeed as people thought for 70 years
Dale Hazelton 9:26:28 AM
on a side note, i used to have a lot of little toads in my lawn. over the last 10-15 years they seem to have slowly disappeared as more and more houses go in, lawn care companies spraying etc....
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:29:05 AM
:( That is a sad story! I was hoping cricket frogs would be a feel-good piece
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:29:35 AM
Tragic are the monoscapes

This is Jimbo writing from my gal's place. I've been a fan for years. Its funny, I listen while writing about Eunice Foote and her forgotten place in Science History. You present Science great. Will miss your Science sharing. Good luck on youe experiements. What are you working on.
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:59:54 AM
Thanks Jimbo via Paula! So glad that you are a dedicated fan too. I'm glad to be of service
DJ AskTheQuestion 10:00:43 AM
One experiment makes dense plasmas by putting millions of amps t hrough small wires. Another experiment makes plasmas by shooting very very bright lasers at materials. Both times I will look at the x-rays that the plasmas generate to learn about their temperatures, motions and behavior.
DJ AskTheQuestion 10:00:54 AM
Cheers to all of you and thanks for listening! See you next week.
