naubat shehnai
Naubat Khana or Naqqar Khana (drum house) at Fatehpur Sikri Naubat is a traditional ensemble (in northern India, this is typically shehnai & nagara-drums) The purpose of the Naubat is to announce important events, like arrival and departure of the king, welcoming dignitaries, and marking special occasions like birth, death or marriage of Royals. They were also timekeepers for the city, signaling things like sunset, or closing of the city gates.] it’s an occupation that often was passed down in families for many generations. Now without royal patronage, the tradition is just about extinct. The musicians are employed mostly for popular events like wedding gigs. The ”Naubat” was performed outdoors - and they used a shehnai because the shehnai can be really loud. It’s performed In what is referred to as a Naqqar Khana (literally drum house) overlooking palaces and temples which enabled their music to be heard across the countryside. It wasn’t really considered suitable as an indoor concert instrument. Until Bismillah Khan. | |
