The LP contains mostly recordings from dance performances. This Gujarati folk tune might be a Dandia stick dance.

Set Break: naubat shehnai

Naubat Khana in Fatehpur Sikri, Drum House in Fatehpur Sikri

Naubat Khana or Naqqar Khana (drum house) at Fatehpur Sikri

Naubat is a traditional ensemble (in northern India, this is typically shehnai & nagara-drums) The purpose of the Naubat is to announce important events, like arrival and departure of the king, welcoming dignitaries, and marking special occasions like birth, death or marriage of Royals. They were also timekeepers for the city, signaling things like sunset, or closing of the city gates.] it’s an occupation that often was passed down in families for many generations. Now without royal patronage, the tradition is just about extinct. The musicians are employed mostly for popular events like wedding gigs.

The ”Naubat” was performed outdoors - and they used a shehnai because the shehnai can be really loud. It’s performed In what is referred to as a Naqqar Khana (literally drum house) overlooking palaces and temples which enabled their music to be heard across the countryside.

It wasn’t really considered suitable as an indoor concert instrument. Until Bismillah Khan.

He modified the electric western instrument, using five single strings instead of the traditional four doubled strings to suit the Carnatic playing style (sustained notes and musical ornamentation).

Sangeet Team (host) 9:40:47 AM
Good morning, Rob F
Karen Swaine 10:35:06 AM
good morning Dave - wanted to thank you for last week's show... imho the music was particularly brilliant! back to today - i've been at so many performances and my memory is really awful no but I'm pretty sure I saw Bismillah Khan perform - either in NYC in the 80s.. or in Amsterdam in the 70s... and as for the sarangi (one of my favorite instruments in Indian classical music) i'm also sure I saw ... ummm... (name escapes me, see what I mean about memory) in NYC & amsterdam. wonderful!
Sangeet Team (host) 10:36:18 AM
Good morning, Karen. Thanks for the kind words. On sarangi back then, it may have been Ram Narayan?
Sangeet Team (host) 10:37:04 AM
Or else Sultan Khan - he toured more in the USA
Karen Swaine 10:39:38 AM
yes.. most likely ram narayan. thanks.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:40:40 AM
Ram Narayan is another prodigy. He helped liberate the sarangi from being solely a support instrument behind vocalists
Sangeet Team (host) 10:41:07 AM
Singers complained he was 'too agressive'
Karen Swaine 10:45:48 AM
tradition is a musical gift, but it no musicians or composers ever broke with tradition we'd never have got Stravinsky, lol... so thank goodness for both tradition and innovation!
Sangeet Team (host) 10:46:54 AM
well put
Todd Denton 11:01:29 AM

Sangeet Team (host) 11:04:59 AM
@ Todd, I'm glad you are enjoying the program. While Sangeet has been on WPRB since 1986, we have not recorded or archived the shows. There are copyright issues with that. Our old playlists are on line going back 4 years or so, if you click the link that starts with "Sangeet Team".
Matt Sabbath 11:05:10 AM
Todd check out some of dj Rungun's recent shows, pure ecstasy of dj & raga; all of the Sangeet djs are amazing, helluva team wprb has.

Thanks for the info. Your playlist notes and photos are wonderful. I noticed "play" buttons on previous playlists, so I was hopeful for audio. Loving the megadose!
Matt Sabbath 11:13:26 AM
Todd I use the wprb info to find songs and wprb will always keep ya busy
Sangeet Team (host) 11:13:49 AM
Yes, the "play" feature typically only works with major pop songs. The obscure Indian music recordings would not have provided clips for this platform. Much of it can be found on YouTube
Matt Sabbath 11:15:02 AM
