Set Break: How do you know how well whales hear?

As kindly as you can, you trap them in a large netted enclosure, wire them up, and play them loud high-pitched noises

Incidentally, one whale was saved by removing a net from its rostrum (nose)

Set Break: Alcoholism on the rise even post-pandemic

After many societal traumas, drinking prevalence goes up, but in other instances it usually falls back down on average

The pandemic seems to be an exception: more Americans drink more now

Set Break: A step forward in making Lithium-sulfur batteries charge faster

These batteries are super energy dense, lightweight, and cheap, but they don't charge fast enough for use

A new component to bind iodide at just the right parts of the battery seems to increase charging speeds dramatically

Set Break: Controversial plant: Milkweed

Famous for helping monarch butterflies, there is much rumormongering about milkweed being poisonous and invasive

It turns out it isn't: milkweed is a native wildflower to much of the US, though there are many different kinds

It's also not too toxic, and tastes awful anyway, so you probably wouldn't be able to eat enough to hurt you

https://www.fws.gov/story/spreading-milkweed-not-m...

Maybe also protect monarchs with action against destroying the planet? https://www.monarchgard.com/thedeepmiddle/no-we-do...

Maybe poisonous to even monarchs via latex: https://monarchjointventure.org/monarch-biology/wh...

Greetings to all!
Dale Hazelton 7:05:56 AM
good morning.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:06:51 AM
A happiest Tuesday to you Dale :)
Dale Hazelton 7:07:28 AM
read a story about how the earth's axis moved 31 inches due to pumping of undergound water shifting the planets mass.
Dale Hazelton 7:08:12 AM
i suppose it's always moving but that seems kind of extreme.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:09:34 AM
Thanks Dale! I'd love to dig into that
Amy Lee 7:13:12 AM
Good morning DJ AskTheQuestion, Dale & chat!
TAndy 7:13:40 AM
Good morning, all.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:13:58 AM
A whole crowd today! Hi Amy Lee and TAndy :)
Dale Hazelton 7:15:00 AM
hey now amy lee and tandy.
TAndy 7:15:20 AM
Glad that I have the radio to keep me company this morning.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:16:32 AM
Me too, TAndy, even from this side of the soundboard!
Amy Lee 7:19:57 AM
This is just broody garagy goodness
TAndy 7:21:51 AM
I can't tell if that's sunlight hidden behind clouds or a spotlight outside. But it sure doesn't feel like 7am
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:22:09 AM
This brooding really sums up my feelings today
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:22:20 AM
I am so jet lagged I have no idea what time it is!
Dale Hazelton 7:34:34 AM
you pulled that topic off well on zero notice.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:34:50 AM
Thanks Dale, I try my best!
dw about it 7:44:53 AM
hi!! long time listener, first time chatter. can you tell me your favorite space fact?
Dale Hazelton 7:45:31 AM

DJ AskTheQuestion 7:47:00 AM
Welcome DW!!!! I love your question. I will answer it momentarily
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:47:20 AM
Dale, your embrace of the sounds validates that this indeed what The People want
Andy Wing 7:54:15 AM
Morning all.
Andy Wing 7:57:56 AM
There are some good videos on Youtube of whales seeking out humans to untangle them. Whales are pretty smart.
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:02:43 AM
Good morning Andy! That is so interesting -- maybe a bias in this study that this whale was particularly comfortable with humans? Maybe that's why the first whale stayed for 90 minutes instead of 30? But human friendliness is probably unrelated to h earing high-pitched noises
Andy Wing 8:10:31 AM
Here's a mind blowing concept, take elephant speech, pitch shift it up to the whale's range, play it underwater and see how they react.

For me, Nov. 2016 was the trauma that lead to drinking. But Nov 2024 ? Line ‘em up 🥃🍸🍷
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:54:39 AM
I am sadly very much with you ǝʌɐꓷ :( :(
𓀠 ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 𓀡 8:58:55 AM
While I try to stay informed, for my own sanity I may avoid the news so I don’t watch Project 2025 come to fruition
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:00:30 AM
I am totally with you. I don't know how to balance doomwatching, some semblance of activism, and staying whole
Amy Lee 9:45:00 AM
"more controversial than expected" - I would expect nothing less of a plant worthy for the controversial plant segment.
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:46:01 AM
I was getting so much more confused as I went -- I'm glad it fit the bill
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:46:33 AM
Often our information on the plants of the world is incomplete. Somewhere where indigenous knowledge sweeps modern science off its feet
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:58:33 AM
See you all next week :) Enjoy your Tuesdays!
