I'd never before heard the ballad "Polly Vaughn" but I see from a Google that it has quite a history, going back at least to a 1765 printing but probably long, long before that. One version makes the tragedy a cautionary tale about hunting after dusk when you can't clearly identify your target! Even Bob Dylan recorded a version around 1992.
