Tirumakudalu Chowdiah (Kannada: ಸಂಗೀತ ರತ್ನ ತಿರುಮಕೂಡಲು ಚೌಡಯ್ಯ) (1895 –1967) was born in Tirumakudalu Narsipur village near Mysore. He became a disciple of Mysore Royal Court musician, Bidaram Krishnappa in 1910.

T. Chowdiah developed the 7-string violin.

Rudrapatna Krishnashastri Srikantan (1920-2014) was born in Rudrapatna, Hassan district of Karnataka. His father Krishnashastri was Srikantan's first tutor. Later, Srikantan was mentored by his brother R. K. Venkatarama Shastri, a violin player who often accompanied M S Subbulakshmi.

Narasimhan Ravikiran was born on 12 February 1967 in Mysore. A child prodigy, he was able to identify about 325 ragas (melodic scales) and 175 talas (rhythmic cycles) of Carnatic music at the age of 2. He is the son of gottuvadhyam player Chitravina Narasimhan.

Mysore Venkatesha Doreswamy Iyengar (1920-1997) was born in Gaddavalli, Hassan District. He was a disciple of Veena Venkatagiriyappa, and was one of the leading exponents of the Mysore style of veena playing.

Shashank Subramanyam was born on 14 October 1978 in Rudrapatna, Hassan District of Karnataka. He is widely acknowledged as a legend of the bamboo flute. His training has been mostly in vocal music, initially under his father, and then by Palghat K.V. Narayanaswami, and Hindustani music under Pandit Jasraj. He is largely self taught on the flute.

Kadri Gopalnath (1949 – 2019) was born in a Tulu speaking Jogi community of Sajeepa Mooda village in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka (southwest, near Mangalore). He pioneered the saxophone in Carnatic music. Kadri Gopalnath made some adaptations to the saxophone to permit playing Carnatic music.

Praveen Godkhindi was born in Dharwad Karnataka in 1973. He studied Hindustani music under his father Venkatesh Godkhindi and Carnatic mridangam player Anoor Anantha Krishna Sharma.

Gangubai Hangal was born in Hangal (Hubli-Dharwad district) in 1913. Her mother was a Carnatic singer. The family shifted to Hubli in 1928 so that Gangubai could study Hindustani music. Her main guru was Sawai Gandharva of the Kirana gharana. She died in 2009, aged 96.

Mallikarjun Mansur, (1910 – 1992) was a Hindustani classical singer from Dharwad, Karnataka. He belonged to the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, studying mainly under Bhurji Khan. He had command over a large number of rare ragas.

Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi (1922 – 2011) was born in Ron, Gadag district in Northern Karnataka. He was one of the greatest Indian vocalists from Karnataka. His main guru was Sawai Gandharva of the Kirana gharana.

On this piece he sings a devotional song in Kannada with lyrics by Purandaradasa (~1484-~1564).

Shivaputra Siddharamayya Komkalimath (1924-1992) was born in the Belgaum District of Karnataka state. (The name "Kumar Gandharva" was a title given to him while a child prodigy; a Gandharva is a musical spirit in Hindu mythology.) He was well known for his unique vocal style and for his refusal to be bound by the tradition of any gharana. He overcame tuberculosis in his 20's, but the damage to his lungs affected his style.

Venkatesh Kumar was born in Bellary, east Karnataka in 1953. He studied Hindustani vocal under Puttaraj Gawai who was adept at both Hindustani and Carnatic music. Venkatesh Kumar taught at the University College of Music, Dharwad, for 33 years.

Parameshwar Hegde (born in 1956 in Honnavar, coastal Karanataka) is a Hindustani classical vocalist. He received training in the Kirana, Gwalior and Patiala gharanas. He went to Dharwad to seek advanced training under Basavaraj Rajguru.

Shobha Gurtu was born "Bhanumati Shirodkar" in 1925 in Belgaum, Karnataka, and died in 2004. She was a disciple of Ustad Alladiya Khan of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, and specialized in the light Hindustani classical style. Her son is percussionist Trilok Gurtu.

Rajeev Taranath was born in Bangalore in 1932, and died in June of this year. He received his initial training in vocal music, and was singing on All India Radio before he was 20. Although Rajeev Taranath held a PhD in literature, he decided to give up his career as a Professor and Head of English Literature at Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli, and went to Kolkata where he began training on sarod under Ali Akbar Khan.

Jayateerth Mevundi was born in Hubli, Karnataka and represents the Kirana Gharana singing style. Teachers include his mother Sudhabai Mevundi, Arjunsa Nakod (Gwalior gharana) and Shripad Padegar, a senior disciple of Bhimsen Joshi (Kirana gharana).
