Hello! Hello!
Number 6 5:03:04 PM
Greetings!
Lizbot (host) 5:03:52 PM
Hi Number 6!
Lizbot (host) 5:05:12 PM
Okay, there IS a boogeyman reference in this song...and "There will be blood on the cleaver tonight!" inadvertently spooky!
Number 6 5:10:22 PM
Ha!
George Korein 5:12:14 PM
Jennifer is epic
Lizbot (host) 5:12:50 PM
Hi George Korein!
Lizbot (host) 5:12:58 PM
@George Korein - It's true
Bud Burroughs 5:13:48 PM
Hello Lizbot! Hearing the Eurythmics is making me wonder how often you've actually played the song "Doubleplusgood"
Lizbot (host) 5:14:14 PM
@george korein - also, the synth ocean sound at the beginning and end of "Jennifer" reminds me of the ocean-engulfed computer in the video for Together In Electric Dreams. RIP computer.
Lizbot (host) 5:14:22 PM
Hi Bud Burroughs!
Lizbot (host) 5:16:13 PM
@Bud Burroughs - Maybe once...maaaaany years ago. I wasn't that into that soundtrack, but I think my opinion of it was colored by not liking the film very much. I haven't heard it in a long time and should revisit it probably - the soundtrack, not the film!
Lizbot (host) 5:17:07 PM
@Bud Burroughs - The movie has all these acting heavyweights, but it was disappointing for all that
Lizbot (host) 5:18:20 PM
@Bud Burroughs - Though I saw it once when I was in high school, so maybe I'll watch it again...But I don't want to! My kid already had to read 1984 for school a couple years ago and she doesn't have any interest in the movie. If she wanted to see it, I'd watch it with her
Danosaur🦖 5:18:59 PM
Hi Lizbot and fellow chatters!
Lizbot (host) 5:19:09 PM
Hi Danosaur🦖!
Danosaur🦖 5:19:49 PM
This Claudine Longet song really reminds me of the '60s
Danosaur🦖 5:20:25 PM
I think it's the harpsichord
Bud Burroughs 5:20:30 PM
Ha! I never actually watched the movie (probably because I knew it couldn't live up to the book), but I've always liked that song.
Lizbot (host) 5:21:10 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Yeah, it's from '68. Andre Popp, who wrote a lot of songs for French yé-yé pop singers wrote it
Lizbot (host) 5:23:56 PM
@Bud Burroughs - yeaaah, that's part of the problem with the movie, and frankly so many film adaptations of books. Of course some are great, but this one and, around the same time I read and then watched the adaptation of "The Trial," the 1962 one by Orson Welles with Anthony Perkins as Josef K, and it WAS good, but it just didn't match what I had in my head when reading that book, and I loved The Trial when I was a teen because I was a mopey teen who liked mopey books
Bud Burroughs 5:25:25 PM
Right, I rarely want to watch a film of a book that I enjoyed, because it's usually a disappointment.
Lizbot (host) 5:28:12 PM
@Bud Burroughs - Yeah, I mean there are many exceptions, but it's like, the more you loved the book, the more of the risk of disappointment it is to watch the film adaptation!
Danosaur🦖 5:29:29 PM
For such a sweet, poppy sounding song this message is surprisingly dark but relatable
Danosaur🦖 5:30:54 PM
I have to admit, the life I live in my dreams makes me want to live there sometimes
Lizbot (host) 5:32:25 PM
@Bud Burroughs - One of my exceptions where I read the book first, adored it, and then watched the movie and adored that too is author Marilynne Robinson's "Housekeeping," which Bill Forsyth (director of cult movies Local Hero and Gregory's Girl,) made into a film in '87. It wasn't well known and not a lot of people saw it. There weren't many well-known actors in it. Gregory's Girl was a bit of a cult hit I think largely because it starred Clare Grogan of Altered Images.
Lizbot (host) 5:33:10 PM
@Bud Burroughs - The best-known actress in Housekeeping is Christine Lahti, and she's great, but she wasn't exactly a household name
Lizbot (host) 5:34:03 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Yeah, I have been having SO many vivid dreams this month, most of them good!
Lizbot (host) 5:34:39 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - I love the juxtaposition of a sweet-sounding song with dark lyrics more than I like a harsh-sounding song with upbeat lyrics, but those can be good too!
Danosaur🦖 5:35:04 PM
It's the mopey teen in you
Lizbot (host) 5:36:32 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Perhaps! But also I think that combo often just works better! The music hooks you in first, and THEN you start noticing the lyrics are actually grim!
Danosaur🦖 5:37:22 PM
True. Sometimes you don't even notice the content of the lyrics until you start to sing along
George Korein 5:37:26 PM
Nice segues
George Korein 5:38:51 PM
Upbeat music, dark lyrics is the classic combo. Dark music, upbeat lyrics is a relative anomaly.
Bud Burroughs 5:39:09 PM
I haven't seen or read Housekeeping. Sounds interesting!
Danosaur🦖 5:40:18 PM
Wait, women DON'T turn into seals?!
Randy Marthins 5:41:08 PM
My dad went to Williams College (in Adams, MA)
Randy Marthins 5:42:39 PM
Talking about people turning into pinnipeds, you must find (or perhaps AVOID) "TUSK" by Kevin Smith
Lizbot (host) 5:44:39 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - The pretty music lulls you into a false sense of comfort and security, and then the angsty lyrics strike!
Lizbot (host) 5:44:53 PM
@George Korein - Re: segues - Thanks!
Lizbot (host) 5:45:48 PM
@George Korein - Yeah, there are some examples of the less common dark music with upbeat lyrics combo, though none come to mind at the moment.. I am sure you can think of some!
Danosaur🦖 5:46:42 PM
@Randy Marthins - I've only heard Kevin Smith discuss the movie Tusk on his podcast but I've never seen it.
Lizbot (host) 5:46:44 PM
@Bud Burroughs - I highly recommend Housekeeping. It won some prize, like The National Book Award or whatever, when it came out in 1980, but it's largely forgotten
Lizbot (host) 5:47:41 PM
@Hi Randy Marthins!
Danosaur🦖 5:47:55 PM
Why is the term "Don't harp on it" a bad thing? Harps sound lovely.
Lizbot (host) 5:48:56 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - ha! I WISH. When I was a kid I always thought seals would be the best animal to be, it looked like so much fun torpedoing through kelp forests! I reevaluated when I realized theyre the favorite food of great whites!
Lizbot (host) 5:50:34 PM
@Randy Marthins - Oh yikes, I avoid all things Kevin Smith, but I forgot that movie even existed. I remember now hearing some murmurs about it when it came out. No thank you!
Lizbot (host) 5:51:53 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Yeah, both harp the instrument, and...to tie it in to selkies/The Secret of Roan Inish/seals, harp seals are pretty great too!
Randy Marthins 5:52:09 PM
@danosaur - somehow, he got Johnny Depp to sign on LOL --- it's one of Kevin Smith's "Canada-phile" movies, like "Yoga Hosers"
Rob from Maryland 🦅 5:52:43 PM
Hello everyone
Danosaur🦖 5:53:15 PM
@Randy Marthins - Johnny Depp signed on because his daughter and Kevin's daughter are friends and went to the same school
Lizbot (host) 5:53:34 PM
@Randy Marthins - Is Williams near North Adams, where MassMOCA is? I've never been to the Williams campus, but I've been to MassMOCA
Lizbot (host) 5:53:41 PM
Hi Rob from Maryland 🦅!
Danosaur🦖 5:53:53 PM
Hey, Rob!
Randy Marthins 5:54:03 PM
@lizbot - did we find the ONE THING we disagree on?
Randy Marthins 5:55:12 PM
@danosaur - say the kids name LOL: Harley Quinn Smith
Lizbot (host) 5:55:19 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - I mean I just didn't like Clerks or Mallrats and I figured it was all downhill from there, so I avoided everything he made since
Danosaur🦖 5:56:20 PM
I agree, that Kevin Smith's movies are a love it or hate it kind of thing
Roffle 5:56:31 PM
Smith is best telling stories.
Roffle 5:56:48 PM
Hello
Danosaur🦖 5:56:51 PM
Agree, Roffle
Lizbot (host) 5:57:06 PM
Hi Roffle!
Randy Marthins 5:57:18 PM
Wait till "Dogma" is resurrected!!!
Lizbot (host) 5:58:17 PM
@Randy Marthins / @Danosaur🦖- Oh no! Kevin Smith named his kid after Harley Quinn?! I know he's a big comic book fan, but The Joker's girlfriend?? Eh. I admit I don't know much of that character's arc
Danosaur🦖 5:58:22 PM
This song sounds like it belongs in a David Lynch movie
.Fräncis 5:58:43 PM
Orvil Peck?
Danosaur🦖 5:59:00 PM
@Lizbot - Yes, he did name her after a comic book character
.Fräncis 5:59:07 PM
oh..yep
Lizbot (host) 5:59:07 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Yeah, I mean I grew up in Jersey, so I was gonna have a strong reaction to his Jersey movies in one direction or the other
Randy Marthins 5:59:48 PM
Kevin Smith wrote "Good Will Hunting" or rewrote it, or something like that
Lizbot (host) 6:00:01 PM
Hi .Fräncis!
.Fräncis 6:00:34 PM
Hey there Miss Lady DJ Bot
Lizbot (host) 6:00:35 PM
@.Fräncis - Yup, I ALMOST saw him at The Met last Friday. He had SOOOO many openers though and I was exhausted that night!

Parr Scream 6:04:26 PM
Good evening all! Hey Lizbot!
Lizbot (host) 6:06:33 PM
Hi Parr Scream!
Lizbot (host) 6:07:28 PM
@Parr Scream - You can parr-se the screams in DevilPlusGhoul with Killbot next Thursday!
Lizbot (host) 6:10:04 PM
@Randy Marthins - ah, well yeah I have only seen the '78 Richard Donner Superman movie and its sequel. My childhood friend loved the first one, so we watched it a lot, and when we tired of it, we would watch the sequel
Lizbot (host) 6:11:22 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Since it's a walrus the guy turns into, hence "Tusk," I really want the soundtrack to heavily feature Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk," but no such luck
.Fräncis 6:12:49 PM
Really digging the vibe on todays show. A bit moody, and it's matching the autumn energy
Roffle 6:12:52 PM
That would go over budget for a Kevin Smith movie. lol
Danosaur🦖 6:13:06 PM
For sure
Danosaur🦖 6:13:40 PM
This song reminds me of the group Zero 7
Lizbot (host) 6:14:57 PM
@.Fräncis - Thanks, yeah, it's kind of a moody show for the first half, and then it's gonna turn more upbeat for the 2nd half! Kinda alienating anyone who wasn't down with the moody vibes, but rewarding those who stick around! - The moodier part is during the sun, and then upbeat part kicks in as the sun sets and darkness sets in...maybe striking a balance?
Lizbot (host) 6:16:19 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Huh, if so I gotta check out Zero 7 cuz I'd probably be into it!
Lizbot (host) 6:18:04 PM
@Roffle - yeah, probably. I just like the idea of a ridiculous walrus body horror movie having a bombastic marching band soundtrack! Tusk was that oddball one-off marching band song Fleetwood Mac made.
Danosaur🦖 6:20:15 PM
@Lizbot - Yeah, they were a couple of musicians who had guest vocalists sing their songs including Sia and Jose Gonzales
Danosaur🦖 6:20:41 PM
I love the Tusk album
Parr Scream 6:21:47 PM
@Lizbot - You are doing a Halloween themed show next week, right? I can't wait! I'll blast your show out the windw for all of the Trick Or Treaters this year instead of my Halloween Playlist.
Roffle 6:23:02 PM
@Lizbot, Oh yeah! I loved that marching band spin! I am a sucker for Kyoto Tachibana Green Band any day. I totally love marching bands!
Danosaur🦖 6:23:16 PM
@Parr Scream - the hip, little Trick of Treaters are gonna love it
Lizbot (host) 6:23:55 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Ah! Good to know. Like a 6ths or Was (Not Was) situation. If you're talking about the Swedish singer Jose Gonzales, I really liked his song "Deadweight On Velveteen"
Danosaur🦖 6:24:45 PM
@Lizbot Yes, that is him.
Lizbot (host) 6:27:50 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - ah, yeah. The first time I heard of him was very early in the history of Doubleplusgood because the station got an excellent 2-disc Swedish psych/garage/songwriter compilation on the Dolores Records label in 2003 called Who Will Buy These Wonderful Evils? and his Deadweight on Velveteen song was on it, along with a lot of other good stuff
Danosaur🦖 6:27:53 PM
Good use of the word taciturn in a song lyric - kudos
Lizbot (host) 6:29:02 PM
@Parr Scream - Yes! Sorry I was on mic and couldn't respond sooner, but Yes! NEXT Thursday - So excited that DevilPlusGhoul with Killbot is falling ON Halloween this year!!
Danosaur🦖 6:29:47 PM
@Lizbot If you like Stereolab and Air I think you will like Zero 7. Very chill, ambient music with a bit of house vibe
Lizbot (host) 6:30:19 PM
@Parr Scream - Nice! I hope it both delights and spooks the trick-or-treaters! My kid has reached the age where she wants to be out on her own with her friends on Halloween, so I'll be happy to be in studio spooking up the night on radios and streaming devices
Rob from Maryland 🦅 6:31:39 PM
Brian Eno woo hoo!!!
Lizbot (host) 6:32:29 PM
@Roffle - haha, I DO like a good marching band. I did NOT enjoy being IN marching band in 8th grade! I played clarinet and had to wear an itchy wool colonial uniform because we were "The Marching Colonials"!
Lizbot (host) 6:33:52 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Yeah, I don't know why but I really relish when Kevin Barnes sings "I never really could accept how taciturn you are"!
Danosaur🦖 6:34:22 PM
Really hear a lot Brian Eno's Roxy Music history in this song
Lizbot (host) 6:35:00 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦅 - Eno singing about boats, as is preference!
Roffle 6:36:31 PM
The weird marching band hats were a deal breaker for me. lol
Lizbot (host) 6:37:42 PM
@Danosaur🦖- oh yeah, I think I would definitely dig Zero 7 then! I love Stereolab, that's one of my favorite bands. So many WPRB DJs were at their reunion at Union Transfer about 5 years ago, me included. I saw them in the late 90s and early - mid-2000s, thankfully got to experience them before the untimely and tragic death of Mary Hansen. I love so much how Mary and laetitia Sadier's voices play off each other
Lizbot (host) 6:39:12 PM
@ROffle - oh GOD. I get itchy just remembering those awful tri-corner hats we had to wear while marching on hot football fields! We had marching band camp in AUGUST and they made us wear those evil wool uniforms for competitions in the summer!
Danosaur🦖 6:39:14 PM
Every since I first heard They Might Be Giants I've tried to put a little birdhouse in my soul
Danosaur🦖 6:40:27 PM
@Lizbot - Sacrifices must be made for art including wearing wool in the summer
Lizbot (host) 6:41:12 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Nice! Well you'll get a chance to do that live in December! They're coming for two consecutive nights December 5th & 6th at Union Transfer - different material each night! I got tickets for both but I'll be getting to the 12/5 show late because that's a Thursday so I'll be coming from Princeton. I get to all of the 12/6 show
Danosaur🦖 6:42:15 PM
@Lizbot - unfortunately, I'm in Los Angeles but maybe they'll come here too
Lizbot (host) 6:44:35 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - ughhh. I didn't even really mind the marching or the music we played. The music was the highlight, the marching was tolerable. Most of it occurred in the fall during high school football system - but that was the MAIN problem - having to attend EVERY home AND away football game. I could not have cared less about my high school's football team, but we of course played at halftime
Lizbot (host) 6:44:50 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Oh I bet they will!
Lizbot (host) 6:46:38 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - TMBG are playing L.A. May 16th! They're gonna play all of the "Flood" album, so they'd DEFINITELY be playing Birdhouse in Your Soul!
Danosaur🦖 6:46:49 PM
This song has kind of a stripped down Fleetwood Mac sound
Danosaur🦖 6:47:22 PM
@Lizbot - Ooh, good! Thanks for the info
Lizbot (host) 6:48:49 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - okay, i can see where you're coming from with that one! I also think The Hidden Cameras has a bit of an early R.E.M. influence, a touch of jangle pop. They describe themselves as secular gay church gospel, FWIW!
Lizbot (host) 6:49:41 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Yeah, they're only playing one night in L.A., but it isn't sold out yet. They're playing two nights in Philly and both have been sold out for a while. i guess they have more fans here? I dunno. They also play SF two nights
Danosaur🦖 6:49:46 PM
@Lizbot - now secular, gay church gospel is a niche genre
Lizbot (host) 6:51:00 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Having seen them a couple times live, I can attest that that IS indeed the vibe at a Hidden Cameras concert!
Lizbot (host) 6:51:25 PM
THIS is a perfect example of a super-upbeat-sounding song with dark gloomy lyrics!
Lizbot (host) 6:52:54 PM
THAT is some impressive falsetto! He might have just beat Russell Mael in the high pitch olympics!
Danosaur🦖 6:53:26 PM
That is impressive!
Lizbot (host) 6:54:02 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Joel Gibb, the lead singer and songwriter of The Hidden Cameras, made a tribute album to Arthur Russell, who I played earlier in the program today
George Korein 6:56:51 PM
Digging this Sheer Bayonet
Lizbot (host) 6:57:26 PM
@goegre KOrein - good!
Lizbot (host) 7:06:45 PM
@George Korein - I knew Sheer Mag was at Johnny Brenda's last night, but I was working on making this show, and it got too late to go after that, and I just wasn't that motivated to go to a show since I went to one the night before, but I DO want to see Tina Halladay belt her vocals in person again soon!
