yes. neighbors get garbage and recycling pickup (i separate and take to the transfer station myself) and the truck pulls up and picks up both the trash and the recycling bins and just dumps them both right in the truck. i seriously doubt it's separated further downstream.

That is actually wild!!! Kind of unbelievable. Unless the truck had two different compartments, I have to agree with you

an office building i worked at in manhattan was the same thing. HR sent out a memo about recycling, and we all had THREE baskets in our office - paper, plastic and cans and garbage. cleaning staff dumped them all into the same bin when they came through.

It's all about the show of it, isn't it? Recycling is an easy way to offload responsibility to individuals

I try to reuse the take-out containers

I've gotten some real nice near-tupperware quality containers

Don't even get me started on recycling.....

In Europe, where landfill space is limited, they are a generation ahead of us by recycling even Saran Wrap

I also wonder! Recycling just tends to be more expensive than making new plastic, and in America where economic concerns rule, it tilts the scales toward more production

Then again, I don’t 100% know what I’m talking about. I know plastics are all sorted out of the waste streams, but what happens after that may not be recycling

oh, and there is NO WAY i could every kill all the japanese stiltgrass in my lawn. i used to have grass, but now my lawn is basically stiltgrass, creeping charlie and crabgrass. some clover too, but i mow around that and let it spread.
