Monash University geologists studied the piezoelectric properties of quartz in terms of amassing gold deposits

Set Break: Figuring out how the solar wind heats up with two aligned spacecraft, one near the sun and one near Venus

Convergence of the NASA Parker Solar Probe and the ESA Solar Orbiter allowed researchers to see the solar wind at two places along its journey, 45 hours apart

Features of the chaotic solar wind could be mapped from one spacecraft to another, indicating that the same "parcel" of solar wind was being measured

Measurements show that the energy gained by the solar wind is the same as is lost from damping of magnetic waves in the solar wind plasma

When there's a will, there's a way

Roboticists at Cornell have developed robots (starfish-like and wheeled) that respond to electrical signals output by fungi

The fungi electrical signals change with UV light exposure, so the robot motion changes when UV shines on them

Set Break: Controversial Plant Segment: Japanese Stilgrass, shallow but pervasive

Invasive replacer of native floor vegetation! Spreads far and wide with lots of seeds

The good: A shallow root system that is easy and satisfying to rip out in bulk

The bad: Tons of seeds and no value to forest foragers, leaving it unchecked

The urgent: Get rid of it now -- early September! Don't encourage it to seed early, get it now right before it seeds!

Good morning and happy "fall" :)
Dale Hazelton 7:10:01 AM
good morning. certainly seems like the season has changed.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:10:53 AM
Suddenly it does! Summer, I don't want you to go, but inexorably onward
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:11:26 AM
Glad to have you here Dale!
Dale Hazelton 7:28:48 AM
plastic from food packaging has gotten out of control.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:34:36 AM
Truly. I feel like the pandemic takeout just accelerated this attitude of, oh well, we can't help it, there are no other cheap alternatives
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:35:31 AM
That alongside the collective realization that plastic recycling is largely a myth. Not quite in all cases (#1/2 apparently) but in most
Dale Hazelton 7:38:33 AM
yes. neighbors get garbage and recycling pickup (i separate and take to the transfer station myself) and the truck pulls up and picks up both the trash and the recycling bins and just dumps them both right in the truck. i seriously doubt it's separated further downstream.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:40:11 AM
That is actually wild!!! Kind of unbelievable. Unless the truck had two different compartments, I have to agree with you
Dale Hazelton 7:42:11 AM
an office building i worked at in manhattan was the same thing. HR sent out a memo about recycling, and we all had THREE baskets in our office - paper, plastic and cans and garbage. cleaning staff dumped them all into the same bin when they came through.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:43:01 AM
It's all about the show of it, isn't it? Recycling is an easy way to offload responsibility to individuals
Joppa Fallston 7:54:03 AM
I try to reuse the take-out containers
Joppa Fallston 7:54:57 AM
I've gotten some real nice near-tupperware quality containers
Joppa Fallston 7:55:32 AM
Don't even get me started on recycling.....
𓀠 ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 𓀡 7:55:52 AM
In Europe, where landfill space is limited, they are a generation ahead of us by recycling even Saran Wrap
Joppa Fallston 7:57:51 AM
Wow that's pretty impressive, I wonder how that works
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:05:49 AM
I also wonder! Recycling just tends to be more expensive than making new plastic, and in America where economic concerns rule, it tilts the scales toward more production
𓀠 ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 𓀡 8:13:01 AM
It’s not merely the cost of making vs recycling, it’s the fees to dispose of waste in a landfill- much higher in Europe
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:14:03 AM
Absolutely! many sides to the incentives
Dale Hazelton 9:48:23 AM
thanks for the interesting topics and music!
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:48:49 AM
So glad you could join today! Thanks for listening, Dale!
𓀠 ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 𓀡 9:49:53 AM
Then again, I don’t 100% know what I’m talking about. I know plastics are all sorted out of the waste streams, but what happens after that may not be recycling
Dale Hazelton 9:50:39 AM
oh, and there is NO WAY i could every kill all the japanese stiltgrass in my lawn. i used to have grass, but now my lawn is basically stiltgrass, creeping charlie and crabgrass. some clover too, but i mow around that and let it spread.
Rob F 9:54:04 AM
Nice to have you back this season
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:58:12 AM
So nice to be here! It's nice to be a regular presence on the airwaves :)
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:58:22 AM
sorry about your lawn Dale. This may be the way of the world
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:58:29 AM
See you all next week!
