Set Break: Memory and planning for the future in fruit bats!

Researchers in Tel Aviv tracked fruit bats and established how they developed maps of which fruit trees were where

They found that fruit bats set out toward trees that fruited for longer time periods after they were kept in captivity for a few days

They also planned to go toward protein-rich fruit trees as necessary

Set Break: Indian lunar mission Chandrayaan-3 Lander and its Vikram rover have measured the Moon's South Pole

Landed a year ago and now publishing results!

The moon's surface seems fairly uniform, supporting an early-molten-moon hypothesis

Some material detected, as expected, indicates a major impact that drove "mafic" rock from deep inside the moon up to the surface

Set Break: Fishery depletion: the models that tell us whether fishing is OK or not are overwhelmingly wrong

Too optimistic! There are usually fewer fish than we assume.

Fishing should leave a rebound-able amount of fish in the ocean for ecology and, of course, for future generations to eat

But complicated models by fisherman tend to be really rosy about whether fish populations are growing, especially in overfished regions, or places where temperatures are rising

Set Break: Modeling x-ray emission from near black holes only makes sense if quantum effects are fully included

Plasma around black holes can emit x-rays in two different states: hard or soft. Sometimes black holes switch between these states very quickly, over just a few days

New research from U. Helsinki shows how quantum effects are essential to establishing both of these states

The hard state arises when the plasma is turbulent; the soft state happens when soft x-ray photons drive the system into a stabler equilibrium

Antimatter and matter, positrons and electrons, drive this system through birth and annihilation

Set Break: Controversial plant segment: Tomatoes: Solanum lycopersicum. Toxic, nonnative, and a tangled mess

Umami power in a juicy red box

Unless, of course, you are eating a modern commercial variety, bred to be pretty and not delicious https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomato#Modern_commer...

Are green tomatoes full of solanine/tomatine and poisonous? Maybe, maybe not: https://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/29/dining/29curi.h...

But most importantly, why are they so hard to stand up?? Tomatoes are bred to have big fruits, not to be sturdy, so gardeners must work hard to support them: https://seedmoney.org/blog/5-ways-of-supporting-yo...

Plus, suckers: https://www.gardenary.com/blog/pruning-tomatoes-10...

Set Break: Tarantula partnerships with frogs and friends

Frogs stay in the same den as the tarantula, keeping its eggs and young safe from insects

Tarantulas might have hairy legs to prevent fire ants from crawling up them

And they might have predator-repellent chemicals they emit... more research necessary

Good morning anyone and everyone!
Dale Hazelton 7:02:12 AM
good morning.
Dale Hazelton 7:10:16 AM
i have daturas flowering under my bird feeder now. they popped up last year and i let them grow not knowing what they were. i guess they seeded themselves.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:11:08 AM
Incredible! Beautiful but dangerous? The birds probably like them, and who knows, maybe brought the seeds there?
Dale Hazelton 7:14:56 AM
friend told me his grandmother used to make a pain relieving ointment from it. might be hearsay...
Dale Hazelton 7:16:32 AM
google shows it's available commercially, so no hearsay.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:16:34 AM
I have no doubt that somebody's grandma did, anyway! and/or something more fun / more sinister
TAndy 7:35:32 AM
Heyyy
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:35:57 AM
Good morning TAndy!
TAndy 7:37:06 AM
Is anyone else suffering from allergies this week?
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:37:32 AM
If I am, it is very very mild, but I sorta noticed it this morning
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:38:14 AM
At least my poison ivy rash, which I discovered a few hours before waking up for a show several weeks ago, has finally faded to oblivion. Apparently warning the public is no guarantee that I'd adequately warned myself
Dale Hazelton 7:38:36 AM
had a couple sneezing fits yesterday. day before my eyes started burning and watering.
TAndy 7:42:55 AM
Wow. I'm suffering from what feels like a full on assault of my upper respiratory system.
TAndy 7:43:31 AM
Whenever you return to the airwaves, you should totally do a mic break presentation about histamines and why the body reacts in such a way to what it perceives as allergens.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:44:01 AM
I will see what I can do! Sorry you're suffering so badly today
TAndy 7:59:11 AM

Morning, DJ AskTheQuestion & all 🌤
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:45:41 AM
Greetings Christine!
Dale Hazelton 9:48:31 AM
last time i grew a tomato plant it had a tomato hornworm on it just before it ripened. and then the predatory wasp that laid it's egg in the hornworm did him in. pretty horrifying way to go.
Dale Hazelton 9:48:53 AM
....consumed from the inside out.
Li Maria 9:49:53 AM
Hi DJ AskTheQuestion and everyone. loved your segment on tomato plants. I sprang for the sturdier, squarish, 6' tall cages--one or two at a time because they are expensive. But worth the investment! My neighbor makes them out of construction materials and the fencing w/larger holes to reach in--7'-8' tall. They work great
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:51:22 AM
Yesss thank you for your glowing review! Maybe we should go that way too... we just tend to have way too many tomato plants, more than we could possibly cage. Maybe we should pick some favorites
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:51:40 AM
The hornworm drama never ends. This year I am squishing them faster than the hornets can get them, I think
Li Maria 9:51:58 AM
Dale, I've seen that--it's creepy and the worm just keeps walking around w/those eggs attached
TAndy 9:53:58 AM
Thanks for the show! And every show this summer 💙
Li Maria 9:54:28 AM
DJATQ, I've definitely had to choose favorites. Not enough room in my little garden
Li Maria 9:57:11 AM
I'm constantly trimming the cherry and Juliet tomatoes so they don't get out of control

DJ AskTheQuestion 9:59:41 AM
Good to know I'm not the only one overwhelmed with cherries! I need to be more selective with volunteers next year
Li Maria 9:59:43 AM
Thanks for all of the wonderful info and music throughout the summer, DJATQ! I hope to hear more of you in the fall!
DJ AskTheQuestion 10:00:25 AM
Thank you all of you, stalwart commenters and otherwise, who tune in and enjoy t he show! Hoping for more time on the airwaves soon :)
