@ DJ Samsa Really enjoying today's playlist. Thanks especially for the selections by Hikaru Utada, Akiko Wada, Lee Moon Sae and the Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band. There are so many great Asian performers outside today's J-Pop and K-Pop mainstreams. It's wonderful hearing some of them here on WPRB.
DJ Samsa (host) 3:39:00 PM
Hi Richard, so glad to hear! Hikaru Utada and Lee Moon Sae are old favorites of mine but I recently stumbled upon music from Akiko Wada and Paradise Bangkok Molam and I think they're really great!
DJ Samsa (host) 3:39:36 PM
Lee Moon Sae in particular is interesting to me to compare to modern K-Pop, his music seems so expressive and unashamed in comparison
Richard of Rocky Hill 4:18:44 PM
@ DJ Samsa (host) Yes! I do recognize that you and the other WPRB hosts are constantly exploring, learning and discovering -- to your listeners' great benefit. Thanks!
Richard of Rocky Hill 4:22:43 PM
I agree with you about Lee. Not to criticize K-Pop (most of which I really love), but there's an authentic, unpackaged quality to what he does. Probably easier as a solo artist, because when there's a large group as in K-Pop, there must needs be choreography of arrangements and performances as well as dance.
Richard of Rocky Hill 4:48:39 PM
As tremendous a conductor, musician and educator was Leonard Bernstein, I'm enjoying hearing Sir Colin Davis & London Symphony Orchestra's version of Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique." Yes, supremely beautiful indeed!
Richard of Rocky Hill 4:50:45 PM
@ DJ Samsa (host) I'm going off to just listen now. Thanks for today's outstanding show, which brought something of a trrue Metamorphosis to my afternoon. :-))
DJ Samsa (host) 4:52:42 PM
For sure, modern K-Pop artists are super impressive and talented in their own way. But yes, I've been told that in the 80's/90's this ballad-style music was really popular in South Korea and it had more of this heartfelt and unpackaged feeling
DJ Samsa (host) 4:53:00 PM
So glad you tuned in, have a great day~
