Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 11:48:27 AM
Welcome to Serenade to a Cuckoo!
Christine 𓅓 12:02:05 PM
Hi Jerry 👋 Happy Friday!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:02:25 PM
Christine, hi!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:02:58 PM
It's beautiful outside!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:03:40 PM
How is everything?
Patrick White 12:05:06 PM
Greetings to Gordski,Christine and all listeners . Looking forward to today’s tribute to ……? I forgot. Is it Miami DOLPHIns or DOLPH Sweet?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:05:50 PM
It's Dolph Schayes
Christine 𓅓 12:05:53 PM
Hi Patrick! I think it's Dolph Lundgren.
Patrick White 12:06:58 PM
RIP to the great Kinky Friedman and belated to the underrated Angela Bofill.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:08:30 PM
Yes, thank you for that, Patrick. Everything's been... sold American!
Patrick White 12:09:48 PM
Sold American song was 30 years ahead of its time.Always enjoyed his NYC crime novels also.
Christine 𓅓 12:09:58 PM
I was lucky enough to experience Babatunde Olatunji and his incredible band in Princeton in the mid 90s.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:10:38 PM
Amazing! How was the show, what was it like?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:11:20 PM
I loved that last one
Adamgoget@instagram 12:12:30 PM
We here Jerry. Do your thing! Happy Friday everyone
Christine 𓅓 12:13:03 PM
Very memorable, even 20-something years later. They made the most incredible entrance. The venue was a church in Princeton, and all the musicians and dancers formed up outside and processed up the aisle to the front.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:13:39 PM
Hi Adam, thanks for making it. Appreciated!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:14:28 PM
Christine, how hip you were, even in your infancy!
Christine 𓅓 12:14:29 PM
The BEST way to enter a venue, in my opinion. You could hear the drums and calabash outside, then there they were, making their way up among the gathered throng.
Christine 𓅓 12:15:17 PM
@Jerry, ha! I probably heard about the show on WPRB.
Patrick White 12:17:37 PM
Saw the School of Rock kids at Princeton Shopping Center last night. They do a good job. Tremendous commitment
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:17:44 PM
Good story, Christine. Sun Ra and band would often do the same thing
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:18:15 PM
What did they play, Patrick?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:19:05 PM
What do you two think of this?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:19:39 PM
And you, Adam?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:20:33 PM
Russ, wherever you are, this track is a masterpiece
Patrick White 12:20:55 PM
Just a variety of classic rock . Some newer rock.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:21:35 PM
You got to love a kid devoted to his craft!
Patrick White 12:22:11 PM
I saw an ad in the 1973 inquirer concert with Doug and Jean Carn at the Foxhole. Russ. Old stomping grounds
Patrick White 12:23:18 PM
Tuesday there was a free Bob Springsteen cover band near my house . I took a walk over . Those mortellicantes.took a 40 minute intermission
Russell Woessner 12:23:33 PM
You could play an entire hour of Love in Outer Space with the different versions that have been released recently! It is becoming a standard!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:23:37 PM
They defined the vibe in Philadelphia, early 70s.

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:23:56 PM
HI Russ
Christine 𓅓 12:23:57 PM
I'm really enjoying the Nubiyan Twist album, by the way 🆕️
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:24:16 PM
That's because you are hip and percussive
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:25:00 PM
Haha, Russ. You are right. I played this to heal your leg injury
Russell Woessner 12:25:57 PM
Thanks. Music is the healing force of the universe.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:26:19 PM
You said it, Al!
Patrick White 12:26:57 PM
Hey Russ who was Gino?wasn’t it called Gino’s foxhole
Russell Woessner 12:27:39 PM
Love Wadada’s sound!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:28:15 PM
Geno's Empty Foxhole. Empty Foxhole was an Ornette Coleman track. Tre hip
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:34:45 PM
Russ, do you have any insight in Geno of Geno's Empty Foxhole?
Russell Woessner 12:34:51 PM
https://phillyjazz.us/2015/03/08/genos-empty-foxhole-2/
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:45:20 PM
Russ, there is no mention of Geno in that article
Russell Woessner 12:46:23 PM
I remember Geno but I did not know him well. I was not a member of the collective that ran the Foxhole. Jules Epstein was a member and probably knew Geno better than I did. Geno was the founder of the Foxhole, the concert space in the basement of Saint Mary’s Church. The Foxhole presented many of the best avant-garde jazz concerts in the city in the 1970’s and beyond. WXPN was directly adjacent to the church. We ran cables from the church to the radio station to do live broadcasts.
Patrick White 12:47:40 PM
Russ actually penned the song You can’t get to Heaven on the 36 trolley. The American Dream changed the lyrics to Frankford El.The court awarded Russ millions in royalties.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:47:45 PM
The Sun Ra ticket was $2
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:49:22 PM
Yeah, Russ is a real Willie Dixon
Brian D 12:59:24 PM
Sounds great Jerry. Rewind: I taught at School of Rock Princeton for about 2 years 2017-2019 ish. Great school, students, teachers. Billy S was a teacher and show leader then now he heads that location. Princeton in quotes heh. Actual school bldg back then was in Mercerville/Hamilton. Now in Lawrence Twp right on the border of the city (Trent'n).
Brian D 1:00:15 PM
Way back when in early 00s they were in Pennington. That was a cool location.
Ossy 1:01:25 PM
Afternoon Jerry
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:04:09 PM
Thanks, Brian. When are we going to get to hear you?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:04:23 PM
Hey Ossy, hi!
Brian D 1:04:29 PM
The flavors of the different (wind) instruments on the Dolphy bands... love that. Especially that bass clarinet.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:05:26 PM
Nicely said
Brian D 1:05:39 PM
Mike Shrieve in the Woodstock film giving it all ... and I think he had a slight eye injury that day. (poked in eye w/drum stick maybe?). You can see him in the closeups with one eye partially closed.
Mike Constantine 1:06:13 PM
Which way to the barbeque?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:06:57 PM
Hey Mike, you looking for some free ribs and a hamburger?
Christine 𓅓 1:07:34 PM
Dang it! 🐦 🎶 There was the thene song. It's now officially Friday afternoon, etc.
Brian D 1:07:39 PM
I did start playing again w/real live people (instead of just couch living room casual playing etc). Couple friends, some I have played w/earlier. Mostly Americana / rock covers. Playing a big outdoor party end July should be a hoot.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:08:32 PM
Christine, right on time despite your working for the man.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:09:07 PM
Congratulations, Brian, I bet you're great.
Russell Woessner 1:09:37 PM
Eric Dolphy’s music lives! This weekend of his music was recently staged at the New School in New York: https://seedartists.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/DOLPHY24-Flyer1-Quarters-1536x1187.png
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:14:15 PM
In my younger days, I wanted a bulge in my forehead like Eric Dolphy. I figured it was all his genius and intensity pushing on the interior of his skull
Patrick White 1:17:39 PM
Hey Brian D I enjoyed the Princeton school of rock show.Princeton shopping center needs to better job promoting these free concerts. Not too big of a crowd
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:24:10 PM
Mike C, you are a fan of Dolphy?
Patrick White 1:28:41 PM
I think everyone is an Eric Dolphy fan… except Miles Davis
Mike Constantine 1:30:14 PM
Don't know much about him...Probably first heard of him via the Mothers album Weasels Ripped My Flesh
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:34:31 PM
Ahh, Barbecue! I get it!!!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:35:09 PM
One of the greatest Zappa works ever
Russell Woessner 1:42:45 PM
Lots of great music at the Dolphy weekend. Highlights: Don Byron leading a quartet of bass clarinets; Eugene Chadbourne playing an unrecorded Dolphy composition on fretless banjo; a trio of Nicole Mitchell on flute, Darius Jones on alto sax and J D Parran on bass clarinet; Craig Taborn and Nicole Mitchell performing an homage to duets that Dolphy played with Cecil Taylor in Taylor’s therapist’s office. The whole weekend was magical..
Rob F 1:44:36 PM
Loved the Stolen Moment track!
Brian D 1:45:26 PM
Agreed Jerry, gotta have Oliver Nelson's "Blues and the Abstract Truth". That one and Horace Silver's "Song for my Father" always caught my attention when I heard songs from them on WPRB.
Samuel Cusumano 1:46:50 PM
woah, the hard cut into the middle of Stand Back really brought me into my special place where stevie nicks leaves song ideas on prince's answer machine and he shows up with a rack of synths and a smile.
Lance Gardner 1:47:51 PM
Hi Jerry... I seem to remember that last tune as a theme song for a radio jazz show. Or is it such a classic I'm confused?
Patrick White 1:48:09 PM
Hey Gordski was Eric Dolphy a big seller at THIRD STREET JAZZ?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:49:41 PM
Rob F, I have been missing you for two months!!!! I don't know if I even thanked you personally for your donation to the station!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:50:33 PM
Thanks, Russ!
Rob F 1:50:45 PM
Hey Jerry, good to be here today. Work has been crazy the last couple months
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:51:13 PM
Rob F, you need Oliver Nelson's The Blues and the Abstract Truth!
Lance Gardner 1:52:35 PM
I now that cartoon you are talking about but can't place the name....... Danger Mouse was British.... not him.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:52:44 PM
Hi Lance, how are you feeling? I can't answer your question, but it absolutely sounds like a theme to a radio show. One of our listeners said the cartoon I was thinking of was Courageous Cat!
Lance Gardner 1:53:21 PM
That's it!!!! Smart listeners for sure
Lance Gardner 1:53:57 PM
Pretty good: did couple chores today. Thanks
Mike Constantine 1:54:14 PM
Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:54:19 PM
Patrick, Eric Dolphy was deemed a prophet and sold well. But there were very few "new releases" for Eric during my store days!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:54:58 PM
That's good, more $$$ for you!
Patrick White 1:56:08 PM
I still didn’t get the barbecue joke.i feel like Homer Simpson at a MENSA convention
Rob F 1:56:30 PM
I switched to donating directly through my employer to get the company match. Then, WPRB said they didn’t get the info that it was from me. So, I started directly through WPRB again
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:56:34 PM
was courageous cat and minute mouse a team?
Rob F 1:57:00 PM
But didn’t cancel the other and now am giving double
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:58:09 PM
They got you, Rob! Thanks so much, thanks for contributions monetarily and personally!
Mike Constantine 1:58:45 PM
Yes...fun fact, the cartoon was created by Bob Kane, creator of Batman and Robin.
Patrick White 1:58:56 PM
If Robs getting double can I get my dollar donation returned?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:00:38 PM
Patrick, glad to answer your very inquisitive and deep question! Zappa wrote a really great jazz composition called Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue that is brilliant, and that is Mike's association with Eric Dolphy. Great track
Patrick Blanco 2:02:41 PM
Oh thanks Gordski.Thats why Frank Zappa didn’t do drugs!!!
Russell Woessner 2:03:24 PM
Jane Bunnett is playing at the Syracuse Jazz Festival today: https://syracusejazzfest.com/friday.html Free!

Lance Gardner 2:06:47 PM
no credit to me for Courageous Cat.....your other listener gets the cupie doll
Patrick Blanco 2:07:26 PM
Jerry and any interested listeners. PBS has been running a 3 part series on history of Disco music .Somewhat disjointed but entertaining. Nice segment on 1974 Philadelphia and some good Sylvester footage
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:08:48 PM
Patrick, I hope you will listen to that track from Weasels Ripped My Flesh.
Rob F 2:11:11 PM
@BrianD did you teach Eli Bramnick at SOR?
Patrick White 2:12:16 PM
Gordski I used to attend Zappaween at the Tower theater yearly
Ross McLochness 2:13:32 PM
Hey all. Shameless plug for myself. I checked with my employer a couple months ago and to my astonishment, they match employee donations! Everyone should check. And donate. The new Dino Tshirt rocks.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:17:42 PM
Hi Ross, thanks for being here and for the donation!
Patrick White 2:18:00 PM
I checked but Unemployed Inc will not match my donation
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:18:52 PM
Hi Samuel, sorry I missed your comment. Thank you for listening!
Ross McLochness 2:25:12 PM
@Brian D, Just getting back through the chat and saw your Shrieve comment. I believe the story is that he was stung by some sort of bee. Whether or not the continuation of the story including the adverse effect of the bee venom on the LSD is true I cannot say.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:30:26 PM
Haha, Patrick. I"m sure the postal system would be happy to kick in some $$
Russell Woessner 2:31:42 PM
