I was lucky enough to experience Babatunde Olatunji and his incredible band in Princeton in the mid 90s.

Very memorable, even 20-something years later. They made the most incredible entrance. The venue was a church in Princeton, and all the musicians and dancers formed up outside and processed up the aisle to the front.

The BEST way to enter a venue, in my opinion. You could hear the drums and calabash outside, then there they were, making their way up among the gathered throng.

Tuesday there was a free Bob Springsteen cover band near my house . I took a walk over . Those mortellicantes.took a 40 minute intermission

You could play an entire hour of Love in Outer Space with the different versions that have been released recently! It is becoming a standard!

They defined the vibe in Philadelphia, early 70s.

I remember Geno but I did not know him well. I was not a member of the collective that ran the Foxhole. Jules Epstein was a member and probably knew Geno better than I did. Geno was the founder of the Foxhole, the concert space in the basement of Saint Mary’s Church. The Foxhole presented many of the best avant-garde jazz concerts in the city in the 1970’s and beyond. WXPN was directly adjacent to the church. We ran cables from the church to the radio station to do live broadcasts.

Russ actually penned the song You can’t get to Heaven on the 36 trolley.The American Dream changed the lyrics to Frankford El.The court awarded Russ millions in royalties.

Sounds great Jerry. Rewind: I taught at School of Rock Princeton for about 2 years 2017-2019 ish. Great school, students, teachers. Billy S was a teacher and show leader then now he heads that location. Princeton in quotes heh. Actual school bldg back then was in Mercerville/Hamilton. Now in Lawrence Twp right on the border of the city (Trent'n).

Way back when in early 00s they were in Pennington. That was a cool location.

I did start playing again w/real live people (instead of just couch living room casual playing etc). Couple friends, some I have played w/earlier. Mostly Americana / rock covers. Playing a big outdoor party end July should be a hoot.

Lots of great music at the Dolphy weekend. Highlights: Don Byron leading a quartet of bass clarinets; Eugene Chadbourne playing an unrecorded Dolphy composition on fretless banjo; a trio of Nicole Mitchell on flute, Darius Jones on alto sax and J D Parran on bass clarinet; Craig Taborn and Nicole Mitchell performing an homage to duets that Dolphy played with Cecil Taylor in Taylor’s therapist’s office. The whole weekend was magical..

Agreed Jerry, gotta have Oliver Nelson's "Blues and the Abstract Truth". That one and Horace Silver's "Song for my Father" always caught my attention when I heard songs from them on WPRB.

Patrick, glad to answer your very inquisitive and deep question! Zappa wrote a really great jazz composition called Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue that is brilliant, and that is Mike's association with Eric Dolphy. Great track
