ep eta: Sinfonía Agridulce

So it's an inside joke around the station that sometimes when you need an easy way to fill a shift at the last minute, you just play Sleep's 63-minute-long track "Dopesmoker."

Tonight we get introduced to the video game soundtrack version of "Dopesmoker," among other symphonic delights.

we out here
TAndy 3:07:29 AM
ohi
Tis (host) 3:07:45 AM
oh hai
TAndy 3:08:43 AM
Opening with Homestuck music is such a POWER move
Tis (host) 3:08:49 AM
Just playing some brave little music to keep the night monsters away, don't mind me
TAndy 3:12:21 AM
I miss staying up late and getting engrossed in reading homestuck/wiki stuff when I was REALLY into it like 12 years ago
TAndy 3:13:28 AM
oh, it's a cover of THAT song lol
Tis (host) 3:15:07 AM
The new management at Homestuck 2 is actually doing a pretty rockin' job, but the corpus isn't overwhelming in that late-night binge kinda way
Tis (host) 3:15:21 AM
And uh, yeah, get ready for a few of those :P
Tis (host) 3:15:26 AM
It's symphony night!
TAndy 3:15:37 AM
I forgot they started Homestuck 2 again. Is it a total reboot or continuing where it left off?
Tis (host) 3:15:46 AM
Continuing! And somehow pulling it off!
TAndy 3:16:08 AM
Interesting. I still have to read the epilogue, and check out the other media.
Tis (host) 3:19:01 AM
The epilogue is probably relevant; the rest could be skippable if one wanted to cut to the chase
Tis (host) 3:19:19 AM
I only ever read one half of the epilogue, but they intertwine so tightly that you kinda get a sense of the other one
TAndy 3:19:45 AM
I understand that the Meat ending is the "official" ending, if I'm correct.
Tis (host) 3:23:43 AM
I think they kind of both are? And maybe there are versions of characters from each one that show up? But honestly I'd need a wiki and a reread to untangle it all
TAndy 3:28:24 AM
Whoops, gotcha!
Tis (host) 3:29:13 AM
I'm glad, because I don't entirely get me, but point is it's turning into something I look forward to, just like it used to be :)
TAndy 3:41:51 AM
Which end credits/final cutscene OST is your favorite, in general?
Tis (host) 3:42:17 AM
I mean I refuse to pick between my children BUT
Tis (host) 3:42:42 AM
I do think the SNES RPG ones live the most rent-free in my head and heart
Tis (host) 3:43:12 AM
In particular the song at the very end of Secret of Mana that plays over the sprite looking off into the distance from the mana tree
TAndy 3:43:24 AM
I can get that. The SNES soundchip has such a magical sound that I haven't heard replicated anywhere else. It's not just the composition and songwriting that goes into it, either.
TAndy 3:43:41 AM
That reverb that's everpresent on a lot of OST for the system is iconic in its own rite.
Tis (host) 3:43:57 AM
No, there's something about the way it approximated/reinvented string sounds and woodwind sounds
Tis (host) 3:44:05 AM
You're totally right
Tis (host) 3:44:23 AM
Just short circuits my rational brain and goes straight to my core
TAndy 3:46:31 AM
It hits, as the kids once said, "right in the feels".
Tis (host) 3:48:04 AM
🥰🥰🥰
TAndy 3:48:46 AM
I'll express my selection soon got a work thing to do rq
Tis (host) 3:50:28 AM
Good, I am excited to hear it!
TAndy 4:16:12 AM
okay first off dat bassline
TAndy 4:16:34 AM
Also my choice is yet another SNES classic, Yoshi's Island for its end credits theme.
Tis (host) 4:18:04 AM
Oh cooool, I don't even remember that one, but I do remember the soundtrack slapping
Tis (host) 4:18:13 AM
I will check it out!
TAndy 4:23:46 AM
An EXTREMELY close second choice would be from the original Klonoa game.
Tis (host) 4:24:05 AM
Ooooh, that one I do not know at all except for box art
Tis (host) 4:24:17 AM
What did you like about it? And Yoshi?
TAndy 4:28:54 AM
Yoshi for the same reason the FFVI choice struck me. The pure SNES sound and the way that the piece has a definite sound of closure for a game that felt so long, and spanned across so many memorable locales and challenges.
TAndy 4:29:14 AM
For Klonoa mainly due to the heavy emotional weight the ending slaps you with out of nowhere, when you get to play it.
Tis (host) 4:29:48 AM
Oooh, intriguing
Tis (host) 4:30:21 AM
Did you play Yoshi pre-emulator? Like, did you beat it on original hardware?
TAndy 4:30:42 AM
I first played and beat it on the GBA rerelease, but never on SNES.
TAndy 4:31:27 AM
I do have it on my 3DS Virtual Console via the injector so I'll play it that way if I do again.
Tis (host) 4:33:08 AM
I cannot imagine beating it without save states -- such a hard game!!
Tis (host) 4:33:22 AM
100%-ing it in particular
TAndy 4:34:03 AM
Ah I only ever did normal completion. 100% especially on certain stages is asking too much of me LOL
Tis (host) 4:36:35 AM
Big same :D
Tis (host) 4:37:04 AM
Fascinating to me that they made a "main line" Mario title such a grinder
TAndy 4:38:21 AM
I'm glad they did. The sequel games did not carry that same weight, unfortunately.
TAndy 4:39:33 AM
Also, RIP to Geoff Follin.
Tis (host) 4:39:33 AM
No; the only other one that I think was tricky to 100% was Galaxy (and maybe Galaxy 2, which I haven't finished)
TAndy 4:39:50 AM
Ahh, by sequel titles I only meant the Yoshi titled games.
Tis (host) 4:39:58 AM
Oh no!
Tis (host) 4:41:30 AM
I'll have to figure out a tribute moment
TAndy 4:41:49 AM
Plenty of time, him and his brother Tim made some BANGER soundtracks.
Tis (host) 4:43:40 AM
Absolutely
TAndy 4:46:23 AM
This is really making me want to check this game out. I doubt I'd ever have the patience to play it, though.
TAndy 4:46:49 AM
A streamer I watch absolutely loved this game and no doubt has at least one playthrough VOD of it, so I'll go that way if I need to.
Tis (host) 4:55:19 AM
Secret of Mana?
TAndy 4:55:39 AM
Ye
Tis (host) 4:55:40 AM
I found it super engaging, but I'm a sucker for action RPGs generally
Tis (host) 4:55:51 AM
They're so easy to pick and play
TAndy 4:56:28 AM
For me it's less playability and more I just never feel like sitting down and playing games anymore, not sure why.
TAndy 4:56:54 AM
I guess all those times being told "stop playing video games and go outside" as a kid caught up to me 😅
Tis (host) 4:57:30 AM
It's funny, I'm hearing that same account from a lot of adults
Tis (host) 4:57:48 AM
I wonder if it's a developmental neurochemical thing
TAndy 4:57:52 AM
Oh my goodnesssssss 💀💀💀 absolute legend. Thank you so much for the show! I'll be waiting for ye on Chewsday, have a good weekend!
Tis (host) 4:58:06 AM
:D :D :D
Tis (host) 4:58:10 AM
(Monday)
TAndy 4:58:15 AM
I think it may also be due to the work ethic we've had to adapt to
TAndy 4:58:25 AM
Yeah I need to stop confusing my days lol
Tis (host) 4:58:38 AM
(11PM - 1AM for the first show, 6PM in subsequent weeks!)
TAndy 4:58:54 AM
ooh gotcha. CYA!
Tis (host) 4:58:58 AM
later gator
TAndy 4:59:33 AM
I gotta play that too :^)
