Supercapacitors store charge in porous materials, forming electric double-layers

Better modeling of supercapacitors may help us optimize them for large-scale energy storage

Set Break: Ice is only slippery because the surface is not the ice crystal we know and love

Scientists at Beijing Univeristy showed how the surface of ice is made of two kinds of ice that can slip past each other

The dislocations and crystal imperfections are what make ice slippery!

Starting small at the surface and clumping near the bottom, marine snow is all the mess of the ocean floating downward, feeding life as it goes

Accumulating in units of carbon / meter-squared / day, in total around 6 new meters of ooze per million years

A cheery g'day t'ya
TAndy 7:17:56 AM
Ohi. I'm really glad to see you on the summer schedule
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:18:29 AM
Me too!!!
TAndy 7:25:18 AM
Okay. But can ye see the mitochondria, which is the powerhouse of the cell? :)
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:30:08 AM
They should have been able to see them, since mitochondria in neurons seem to be between 300 and 9000 nanometers long, and here they could see things on the scale of 5-10 nm
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:30:30 AM
The neurons are indeed powered! ⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:30:55 AM
But an image like that probably keeps the next 10 years of graduate students occupied because there must be so many details to look at
TAndy 7:38:28 AM
Honestly the color compositing they chose is keeping me mesmerized too
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:39:43 AM
Yes, how do you effectively visualize such a huge picture?? You need to be thoughtful about color
TAndy 7:54:32 AM
I long for the day that super capacitors are used in smaller capacity devices like dashcams (to resist battery swelling from heat) and those god awful disposable vapes
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:58:00 AM
The future is potentially bright! Though making vapes better is maybe not the best use of technology, imho
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:58:46 AM
Introducing, an eco-friendly cigarette, burning up into only water and addiction!
TAndy 7:59:35 AM
I feel like making them more dependent on receiving a charge will do a service to stop people from buying and using them so much. I'm not a fan of how our finite source of lithium is being spent on that crap anyway.
TAndy 8:00:49 AM
Honestly you could probably do an entire show on the ethics of the vape market and how the "above the influence" type of advertising did more harm than good in reducing use. I watched a video explaining how that happened on a corporate level, to the point even that some of the ads may have encouraged teenagers who never smoked to start vaping.
TAndy 8:03:39 AM
I'm all for personal choice, but I'm also a big proponent of making people aware of accurate information about the things that impact their quality of life. Including being made aware of habits or consumable materials that are harming them without realizing it.
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:04:02 AM
That stuff is so darkly fascinating. How we are malleable
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:05:12 AM
The industry ads definitely made smoking seem cooler! https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2563637/
TAndy 8:08:52 AM
It's sobering that a paper from 2006 may as well have been from 2016 with how history repeated itself. Let me find that video in case you're interested in grazing through it

Thank you TAndy :) nice to have you along this morning!
