E.g., making hydrogen for future fuel requires IRIDIUM

But recent advances mean you can reduce the amount of iridium by 20x and still get the same amount of hydrogen

Set Break: Alternative to bariatric surgery for reducing hunger: burning your stomach lining

~200,000 people get bariatric surgery in the US every year

So a less invasive alternative sounds pretty awesome!

Researchers are exploring a less invasive technique that burns the stomach lining to reduce production of a key hunger hormone, grehlin.. As grisly as it sounds, it so far seems effective with few side effects (but who knows about more complete studies)

(note: semi-graphic surgical image inside...) https://www.sciencenews.org/article/burn-stomach-l...

(but don't assume grehlin isn't otherwise useful! https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC40493...)

Set Break: Orangutan nesting are an engineering skill that must be learned

Researchers followed an orangutan population for 13 years to learn how they develop nest-building skills over their lives

Every night, orangutans build a nest 60 feet into the treetops, including pillows and roofs

Babies have to learn how to do this as they grow up

A good morning to ye!
𓀠 ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 𓀡 7:03:37 AM
And to ye as well
TAndy 7:36:36 AM
Oh good morning there!!
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:37:10 AM
Thrilled to see you both! I love my weekend morning subs :)
TAndy 7:37:35 AM
The feeling is mutual
TAndy 7:45:30 AM
(yeah I'm fat so what) I appreciate this subject being talked about this morning 💙
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:51:24 AM
Glad to put it on the airwaves! I hope my informal rambling comes across as even keeled.
TAndy 7:57:08 AM
Personally I don't know if I could ever go through with that lining burning procedure, it sounds very unpleasant and no telling if the leftover scar tissue can cause further issues with cancer or necrosis or whatever
TAndy 7:57:27 AM
Even the standard cutting the stomach down to size sounds unpleasant to me
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:00:23 AM
It does sound unpleasant!! I would not like to be a guinea pig in that set of procedures
TAndy 8:16:38 AM

a bit surprising that they do not reuse nests to save the daily effort
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:26:36 AM
Isn't it? I am trying to learn why
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:26:44 AM
There may be no why, it's just that they do
𓀠 ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 𓀡 8:31:39 AM
I would guess new nests might also have something to do with their wide range of foraging? Saving the commute?
TAndy 8:31:45 AM
Maybe cleanliness or bed assembly is fun to them
𓀠 ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 𓀡 8:32:01 AM
I have no idea really
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:42:09 AM
Both good points! It's like their central artform so maybe they enjoy practicing it? But shortening the commute makes a lot of sense too
Zach 8:42:13 AM
I was just thinking before you brought it up “Stevie would love this topic”
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:45:49 AM
Yes! The emergence of the CMB is a nice place where cosmology and plasma physics (my focus) collide
TAndy 8:55:00 AM
DJ!! Thank you so much for the music and discussion this morning. Have a good Sunday :)
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:58:53 AM
Great to be with you all :) Thanks for tuning in!
