“I hope when I die I go like John [Grabski], embroiled in the middle of things, surrounded by people I love, doing the things that matter most. I hope I leave a mountain of shit unfinished, that I have a pan on the stove, a phone call waiting and a pencil in my hand. I hope I'm man enough to be thinking about tomorrow.” - Steven Frank Albini

Hi DJ Jon Solomon. How are you doing today?
Jon Solomon (host) 5:03:05 PM
You know, I'm decent enough. Been a sad but unexpectedly beautiful week.
Jon Solomon (host) 5:03:22 PM
We'll get to that in a couple minutes...
Jon Solomon (host) 5:03:38 PM
But I am very glad to be on the radio! Among other things I am thankful for!
Kelly Nielsen 5:04:07 PM
Glad you're on the radio, too!

Mr.M, glad you're tuned in!
Liz Bot (1) 5:14:02 PM
I know Albini said in interviews that hearing The Ramones as a teen changed his life, so makes perfect sense for #1 on his list
Jon Solomon (host) 5:16:38 PM
There are a few gems he realized he omitted after posting (and that his former office manager couldn't believe he skipped) but that's part of the point of the exercise I suppose...
Jon Solomon (host) 5:19:06 PM
Ramones were the only "lock" I'd predict on a list like this.
•ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ•💀 5:19:25 PM

Hey Jon and chat! Super cool idea. I did come across this list sometime over the past week, though don't recall most of it aside from one track I would never have expected. It hasn't come up yet.

I also look forward to your Neil Young reflections next week. He's playing here in London, Ontario in July. Haven't bought a ticket, but highly considering it as I've never seen him live before.
Jon Solomon (host) 5:47:18 PM
Brian, I had a very good time. I'd recommend it and also if you use the code I will drop in the chat you can save $10 off a ticket...

Joe M 6:25:49 PM

Methinks Mr. Albini would have been a valued addition to the PRB line-up.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:34:25 PM
I was listening to the first half of the new Kreative Kontrol and Vish pointed out that by recording well over 1,000 albums it is possible that Steve Albini personally impacted more total people in the world of (independent) music than possibly anyone. That doesn't even count people at venues...shows...record stores...

Remembering there's a great segment of Albini discussing discovering The Ramones on the Thrill Jockey DVD from 2006: LOOKING FOR A THRILL : AN ANTHOLOGY OF INSPIRATION
Jon Solomon (host) 6:58:10 PM
When I turned...30? 35? Chester biked to a gathering at my parents' house (which is very uphill from his dorm) and arrived soaked in sweat with many (Korean?) energy drinks (that I was scared to drink).
Jon Solomon (host) 6:58:38 PM
Brian, there sure is! I did think of that. Watched much of that DVD on a long flight (but I can't remember to where).
Teresa Peacock 7:00:42 PM
OOOOoooo, I've never heard this Shellac before! It's totally mesmerizing!!!

Liz Bot (1) 7:02:12 PM
@Jon - Yeah, that sounds about right!
Joe M 7:02:31 PM
Shellac played union transfer like a week after they opened. I remember being excited to have a real good excuse check that place out. Incredible show. I think about it often.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:03:51 PM
My wife and I were talking about how she saw Shellac so many times it really made her a fan. Like, she almost certainly would not have gone to see them on her own but it grew to be something to look forward to. Esp. those UT shows.
Joe M 7:05:43 PM
that rules.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:06:05 PM
I'd guess she saw them 6-7 times all-in-all?
Joe M 7:06:48 PM
And she wasn't a fan starting out? Like they won her over??
Jon Solomon (host) 7:07:31 PM
Great question. It is not like she was a stranger to loud music.
Liz Bot (1) 7:09:04 PM
@ Jon / @Teresa - I love that Chester’s mom knew Ron & Russell Mael from back when they used to work for a service in L.A. chauffeuring kids to school. I learned this when Chester’s mom called the phone bank during one of my membership drive shows many years ago while I was playing a Sparks song. Imagine getting driven to school by Ron Mael every day. I hope he remained completely expressionless and silent for most of the drive and then hopped out of the car & danced the Charleston upon drop-off
Jon Solomon (host) 7:09:10 PM
Around when I first met her she invited me to go see LOW with her but I didn't for reasons that escape me presently.
Joe M 7:09:25 PM
Yeah, sorry I didn't mean that to sound judgey - I think I appreciated them when I heard them on record, but I understood them when I saw them live. So I completely get what she means.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:09:40 PM
Liz, that's the most incredible thing I've heard tonight (and I played The Proclaimers).
Jon Solomon (host) 7:09:53 PM
Not judgey at all!
Jon Solomon (host) 7:10:14 PM
We all come to things differently. No straight path.
Teresa Peacock 7:11:51 PM
I only got to see Shellac once. I think it was in 1994(?) at the Thread-Waxing Space in NYC. They were phenomenal! But unfortunately, that show became semi-notorious for being the most uncomfortably, infernally hot and crowded venue ever. I admit with a heavy heart that we left halfway through their set, just because the venue was so excruciatingly hot.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:14:27 PM
May of 1994 if memory serves (was not there).
Nicole Scheller 7:14:38 PM
@teresa I started working at TWS in 1998. Summers were intense. I can't imagine a Shellac show there in those conditions.
Brian Kijewski 7:16:48 PM
gotta run for band jam in a minute. excellent show, love the inclusion of Futurist. I've heard bits and pieces of this, but never in full.
Teresa Peacock 7:17:06 PM
@Nicole -- No way! I feel like you and I have just missed bumping into one another on so many different occasions and contexts.
Brian Kijewski 7:17:43 PM
so glad I saw Shellac once in Toronto in 2008, if I only remembered it more clearly
Joe M 7:17:43 PM
This is a commissioned piece? It's a movie?
Nicole Scheller 7:18:20 PM
@Teresa I know! Uncanny.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:18:27 PM
It was for a Canadian dance troupe, Joe!
Mary Jones 7:18:37 PM
@Lizbot you have no idea how envious Dennis would be by the idea of having Ron Mael drive someone around.
Nicole Scheller 7:19:00 PM
Was I familiar with Shellac? I don't think so. Did I love them immediately, yes.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:19:43 PM
Did you go see them with me at the Knitting Factory on Ludlow or were we only there for Silkworm?
Jon Solomon (host) 7:23:33 PM
Similarly, did you go see them with me at the Irish bar in South Jersey where there were a bunch of locals drinking on the first floor and Shellac played with Danielson on the third?
