I remember my old roommate Dan and I got to go to Steve's 35th (?) birthday party at Lounge Ax and they showed a video that had been made for the occasion with a surprisingly hilarious recurring bit from Kurt Loder. Somehow, this has never made the Internet.

There are no words for things like this, but you did a damn admirable job, Jon.

I got to see Big Black, at DC Space I think, in the early 80s. They seemed quite scary actually! Jon , my buddy Damon Locks from Black Monument Ensemble posted a nice thing re: Steve on Insta. Anyhoo just wanted to check in and say hi, back in about a week. Heading out soon for some dinner. Hang in there brother, keep fighting the good fight.

Steve Albini pontificating on real mayonnaise is etched into my brain

Mayonnaise is as it is now known a bastardization of the Sauce Mayonnaise every saucier learns to make his first season as an apprentice. Pre-packaged mayonnaise sold in jars is almost nothing but tasteless vegetable oil and water, emulsified by gum and gelatin. I think this product is analogous in many ways to the CD, and it's introduction has degraded the standard of eating in much the same way digital recording has degraded the standard of music.

His food blog was terrific. Let me see if I can find it.

Yeah, life is so unfair. Just glad I got to catch Shellac live once in Toronto in 2008. and nice one, I grabbed this new Red Star Sky single off band camp a couple days ago. Both tracks on it are sooo good.

Hope it went well for you, Zach. Did you have a favorite sign? Did you also almost trip on a dead rat?

Here in Germany on May 30 we will have off for a holiday called Fronleichnam, which translates as Happy Cadaver. (I think it's Corpus Christi over there.)

Avoided the dead rat thankfully. The 1/4 mile to go sign at the entrance of the navy yard was honestly my favorite sight in Philadelphia that day, but I also saw multiple “run like you stole something” signs that actually kept me going hahaha.

Almost a two minute PR from last year though so pretty happy with it overall

Zach, I was three minutes slower than last year. Blame all the people who started walking like 1K in I had to weave through (because I must blame someone).

Getting to our corral on time I think was the biggest help this year, actually got to be with the group running my pace

Nice. My running pal and I moved up to a faster corral than I was supposed to be in, so I was all the more surprised that a bunch of people stopped running so soon!

Next year I won't also be on the radio until 11 pm the night before!
