Great question! Yes - they do wear out. Honestly I change them if I find that they are not going through the fabric as easily. FIner needles will also bend.

i picked up a featherweight at a yard sale for 15 dollars. i said 'you can get a lot more for this, are you sure?' and she said everything had to go. gave her a twenty and didn't wait for my change.

i found an 1870s wheeler and wilson in a nice treadle base on a local group fb auction group. the ad said it would be pretty painted and put in the garden. i had to save it from that fate and got it for 28 dollars.

i used to do a lot when i lived in brooklyn, made curtains for my apartment from bolts of antique fabric that canal jeans used to sell. tailor throift store chlothes....things like that.

YOu can find all sorts of machine feet online. My friend's father made feet for industrial use tailored to the project and material.

a scrapyard two miles away from me and one day i saw some interesting machinery there, it was all shoemaking stitchers, huge 7ft tall things. shame they got scrapped.

In all seriousness that B. Hutton song was just a finely cut gem. It was so well written, the story being carried forward by the rhymes. I hear folks trying to write in that style but it doesn't seem as well crafted as those ones from the 1st half of the 20th century
