Commie Francis (host) 9:02:20 PM
thank you for showering your riches on Krista, she deserves it!
Marcus Haupt 9:07:32 PM
Jon Solomon tricked me into pledging during his show but you are always on fire Commie. The Lyres on Ace of Hearts. Top notch. Mass Ave forever.

I missed your selection from Second Empire Justice! Maybe there's still time for something from The Blood: False Gestures... or Jerry's Kids Is This My World?
Commie Francis (host) 9:32:20 PM
both excellent choices but i don't have them with me!
Jim Otter_ 9:32:55 PM
You probably don't have the ultra rare Necros: Conquest for Death then... enjoying the show regardless!
Commie Francis (host) 9:32:57 PM

Hey, thanks for the love. I made dinner tonight and I've got the radio on. The slight static only improves it.
Krista Blodgett 9:38:04 PM
Baby Rivka sleeps right through pretty much anything on the radio, makes it nice to drink a Hydration Cube Beverage. (That's the weird name for the German water flavor cubes from Aldi)

Hi Krista! ❤️Aldi❤️

Ken Katkin 9:47:05 PM
Someone earlier in this chat mentioned The Groceries, a band led by Andy Gomory (WPRB '79). Their 1983 album is no longer their only album, since they released a follow-up (on Bandcamp) in 2023 and 2024! https://groceries2.bandcamp.com/
Ken Katkin 9:48:27 PM
Also, when I was on-air on WPRB in 1983, I liked to play "The Orchids" off of Psychic TV's then-new 1983 LP "Dreams Less Sweet."
Marcus Haupt 9:50:08 PM
I remember when WPRB would play the Groceries back in 1983.
jimbooomonthlydonorooooOoO 9:51:48 PM
Yesssssssssssssss Fred and Tooooooodyyyyy
Ken Katkin 9:52:30 PM
Yes, The Groceries got a lot of play in their day. Andy G's next band The Swinging Pistons (with Billy Tucker of Regressive Aid) got even more!
PledgiePethie! 9:53:17 PM
Ooooh, I loved Regressive Aid!
Ken Katkin 9:54:02 PM
The Rats is a great pic! I must admit we WPRBers barely knew what Fred & Toody were up to in 1983, though everyone already loved The Lollipop Shoppe single!
Ken Katkin 9:55:15 PM
"There She Goes Again" is sometimes said to be about Edie Sedgwick, whose posthumous birthday is today (4/20).
Commie Francis (host) 9:55:28 PM
i love hearing what college radio stations were into in specific years. for serious the best little cultural slice
PledgiePethie! 9:58:25 PM
What was the Bath Boy of 1983, I wonder?
Ken Katkin 10:00:18 PM
A lot of people played "Never Never" by Feargal Sharkey's solo project The Assembly on WPRB in 1983, when it was new.
David Shortell 10:01:57 PM
Had Sam Cooke lived, what would he have said about the Velvet Underground's swipe of his "Hitch Hike"?
Marcus Haupt 10:02:05 PM
in 1983 you played the Fall just as much as you do today. And i thank you for that.
Ken Katkin 10:05:31 PM
Regressive Aid's only LP did come out in 1983! After that, Henry Rollins poached every member of the band (except its front man Billy Tucker) to become the Rollins Band, which is what made Regressive Aid fall apart.
PledgiePethie! 10:07:35 PM
That record is amazing. I play it sometimes on my show
Ken Katkin 10:08:23 PM
We played The Fall all the time in 1983. But in those days, we played The Birthday Party as much as we played The Fall!
Commie Francis (host) 10:08:38 PM
oh i think we just made our goal?? jon can you double check?
Ken Katkin 10:09:42 PM
"Mutiny In Heaven" is The Birthday Party's best song, and it came out (on a 12"45) in 1983!
Jon "pledge.wprb.com" Solomon 10:10:12 PM
I will check but not before I share my delight that our own Mike Lupica is a citation on the Regressive Aid Wikipedia page.
Jon "pledge.wprb.com" Solomon 10:10:13 PM
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regressive_Aid
PledgiePethie! 10:10:34 PM
That is a marvelous tidbit!!!
Jon "pledge.wprb.com" Solomon 10:10:55 PM
I count 12 pledges + one so that's 13 in my book!
Marcus Haupt 10:12:18 PM
Jon, that page mentions City Gardens. That's taking it way back
Jon "pledge.wprb.com" Solomon 10:14:37 PM
I'm reading the comments (for a change) here - https://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2006/04/what_the_world_.html
David Shortell 10:14:39 PM
The Rats that we heard are different from the Akron band that recorded "The Rat's Revenge (Part 1)", a 1965 song I first heard on WPRB in 1983.
Krista Blodgett 10:16:13 PM
Sounding amazing!!
Ken Katkin 10:17:40 PM
There is nothing better than DJs singing on-air and doing a great job of it!
TAndy: Monthly Doner 🥙 10:18:09 PM
This is such a lovely end for the fund drive <3 excellent singing
Jon "pledge.wprb.com" Solomon 10:19:42 PM
👏👏👏👏👏
Kelly Nielsen 10:19:51 PM
Amazing
Ken Katkin 10:21:01 PM
Another local record that got a lot of play on WPRB in 1983 was "Dead Rock'N'Rollers" by Detention.
Commie Francis (host) 10:21:07 PM
thanks guys!
Kelly Nielsen 10:22:04 PM
So happy to hear Chameleons
Rob from Mary Pledge Land 🦅 10:22:22 PM
Bravo, Bravo, Commie and Shaina!
Jon "pledge.wprb.com" Solomon 10:22:42 PM
I swear WPRB had a version of Dead Rock'N'Rollers with alternate lyrics at some point. Perhaps on a Cart?
Jon "pledge.wprb.com" Solomon 10:22:53 PM
I should listen to The Chameleons more.
David Shortell 10:25:08 PM
Detention reunited at the Court Tavern shortly after Jim Carroll died, but I'm told they did not alter that song's lyric about him.
Ken Katkin 10:25:17 PM
This Bongos track got a lot of play on WPRB for obvious reasons! And yes, Dead Rock'N'Rollers was on a cart as well as a 7"45, so maybe it was a different version.
Ken Katkin 10:26:37 PM
Artificial Artifacts were a Detention-like band that also got a lot of play, probably more circa 1985 than 1983. Their entire output was on carts! They were way ahead of their time on the "no physical formats" tip!
Marcus Haupt 10:27:13 PM
WPRB would play Hyacinth Girl from Winter Hours in 1983
Jon "pledge.wprb.com" Solomon 10:28:27 PM
The band that does "Santa's Cadillac!"
Commie Francis (host) 10:28:40 PM
yes christmas favorites wards!
Ken Katkin 10:29:17 PM
Yes, we played "Hyacinth Girl" by Winter Hours and also "My Boyfriend" by The Cucumbers, who were a female-led Winter Hours-type NJ band!
Marcus Haupt 10:34:36 PM
Did Brooke Shields matriculate in 1984?
Ken Katkin 10:35:52 PM
Brooke Shields matriculated in 1983 (with me) and was my classmate in the Great Class of 1987.
Liz Bot (1) 10:38:42 PM
Popping in to say Hi! Enjoying the show on the drive home
Ken Katkin 10:40:53 PM
In 1983, "Neil Armstrong" was the WPRB hit off that Angst record!
PledgiePethie! 10:41:18 PM
Helloooooo Liz Bot!
Liz Bot (1) 10:41:32 PM
Hey Peth!
Commie Francis (host) 10:47:07 PM
shaina just did a fist pump when i said "Philip Glass"
Ken Katkin 10:52:51 PM
Re Philip Glass: In 1984, Princeton University loaned me a van so I could drive a dozen students to the Brooklyn Academy of Music to catch a performance of "Einstein On The Beach." I think they subsidized the ticket price, as well!
jimbooomonthlydonorooooOoO 10:53:22 PM

@Ken Katkin we love nostalgia!

Marcus Haupt 10:56:25 PM
You never told us what Eating Club you bickered
Ken Katkin 10:58:19 PM
This Romantics song is heavily ripped off from "Super Freak" by Rick James!
Marcus Haupt 10:58:54 PM
This song was the line dance for Soul Train on April 14 1984
Kelly Nielsen 11:01:13 PM
Thank you for a great show!
