☕️🫖 Tea time with Dave 🎙️ 📻
Sangeet Team (host) 9:02:36 AM
Good morning, and welcome to Sangeet
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 9:52:07 AM
Good morning! Thanks for always making my Saturday mornings chill!
Sangeet Team (host) 9:52:49 AM
Good morning, Addie. Nice to hear you are enjoying. I hope the winter storm was not too rough for you
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 9:58:04 AM
It was glorious! I loved it. And now it’s half melted. Will be gone by eclipse time!
Sangeet Team (host) 9:59:23 AM
Oh, will you be in the path of totality? 🌑
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 10:07:31 AM
Yep! We’re having a party in our yard. I took the day off work because so many roads are going to be closed. The state is expecting 200k people!!
Sangeet Team (host) 10:08:49 AM
Wow ! I'm jealous. I had contemplated driving up same day, but opted against it for that reason.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:09:47 AM
Hope for clear skies nationwide
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 10:10:16 AM
Yes, I think it’s going to be bananas. All the emergency planning people are expecting there to be a total standstill on the interstate, and for us to run out of gas at gas stations!
Sangeet Team (host) 10:15:42 AM
I'll have to live with the disappointment of another partial eclipse here 🌒
Sangeet Team (host) 10:19:17 AM
As a consolation, we get to tell tales of the "Great Quake of 5 April 2024"
Rob F 10:27:33 AM
GM, just finished the gym. This one sounds good
Sangeet Team (host) 10:31:00 AM
Good morning, Rob F. The acoustic mandolin is not commonly played in Indian classical music. It is found more in film tunes though
Rob F 10:37:12 AM
Sounds good with the drums
Roffle 10:49:58 AM
Earl Grey! That is SO colonial. LOL!
Sangeet Team (host) 10:50:10 AM

Sangeet Team (host) 10:57:19 AM
and good morning, Roffle
Roffle 10:58:23 AM
Good Morning Sangeet!
Roffle 11:00:13 AM
Love the Bombay Sisters BTW! They are definitely place holding masters.
Roffle 11:04:35 AM
I am still just looking back at that photo where the fret neck goes across both of their laps! That is a profound instrument! It's an upright bass that is not upright at all. :)
Sangeet Team (host) 11:05:02 AM
The 2 Bombay Sisters have another sister that lives here in NJ
Sangeet Team (host) 11:05:53 AM
That instrument is a tamboura - a fretless drone instrument. Not for melody - just for drone / pitch reference
Roffle 11:06:11 AM
Another reason to love my childhood home. :)
Brian D 11:07:10 AM
Loved hearing the mando pieces today Dave! Great stuff all around
Roffle 11:10:36 AM
Oh, nice! So it is sort of a bass holding things down. LOVE IT! I was just spitballing. I really don't have a clue sometimes, but I love drones that hold things together for sure. I want one now! My friend has an electric sitar, but it's just weird and not a sitar at all. Just expensive.
Roffle 11:12:06 AM
Honestly I could just buy a bridge and convert any guitar to do the same.
Roffle 11:23:41 AM
Hindustani violin is north Indian. I have little clue as to such, but another Sangeet person mentioned it to me last year.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:24:23 AM
Good morning, Brian D. Sorry for the delay in responding
Sangeet Team (host) 11:25:58 AM
Yes, Hindustani in the classical style for North India. Carnatic is the style in South India. They are largely similar, but distinct in many ways
Sangeet Team (host) 11:26:47 AM
But the violin instrument is basically the western construction, just tuned differently
Sangeet Team (host) 11:28:39 AM
They sell digital tambouras now, so you don't need to purchase the large and fragile instrument. There may even be an i-phone app for a tamboura
Sangeet Team (host) 11:31:04 AM
Remarkable how the violin has integrated itself completely in Carnatic music. It has become indispensable.
Roffle 11:33:45 AM
It so fits! Frets are almost pointless in most Indian music considering the insane use of semitones. Just ear candy for sure.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:34:17 AM
frets can be a hinderance
Ossy 11:35:28 AM
Windy morning Team Sangeet
Sangeet Team (host) 11:37:12 AM
Good morning, Ossy. I hadn't noticed the wind. Was just glad it wasn't raining again
Roffle 11:38:59 AM
I think scalloped are interesting, but still. That is a light touch play. Fretless is another world. Especially for guitar. That is my next neck investment for sure.
Roffle 11:39:49 AM
Hey Ossy! Love a bit of wind for sure.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:39:55 AM
I have a fretless instrument up next
Roffle 11:46:53 AM
Amazing how music kinda finds it's way into four time. All over the world.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:49:43 AM
Much like the 12 tone scale - seems to be a mental thing with humans
Roffle 11:52:10 AM
Yeah, like the fingers only stretch so far. So we play in the comfortable positions. Just sorta happens.
Roffle 11:52:43 AM
I enjoyed this listening today Sangeet Team. Thank you.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:53:11 AM
I'm glad you were able to catch the show, and enjoyed it
Roffle 11:54:40 AM
It's a wonderful sonic landscape without a doubt!
