But this 1968 example of cultural appropriation of Native American images must be understood as part of the fascination the American West has held for Europeans. Buffalo Bill Cody's circus-like wild west show was hugely popular during its European tours. Zane Grey and Louis L'Amour novels were bestsellers. Not defending the costumes, but explaining them.

An old friend of mine toured Europe in the 1970s with an American bluegrass band -- and was astonished to being playing to an audience of young Parisians dressed up as "cowboys & Indians"! Even folk-country music from Kenticky-Tennesee-the Carolinas was somehow associated with the lore and legends of Texas-Arizona-New Mexico!
