Hey Everyone! Happy PI Day / Freakishly Warm Early Spring Day!
Travis in TechniColor ado 5:05:20 PM
Happy pi day. Feets of snow and still falling here in Colorado.
joe 5:06:28 PM
We don't celebrate Pi Day in our house. We are math agnostic.
Lizbot (host) 5:06:29 PM
Hi Travis in TechniColor ado! I could use some of that snow in the studio...or at least some of that cold air! It's downright hot in the Barge right now
joe 5:06:42 PM
Is that the one where we don't know whether or not there is a math?
Lizbot (host) 5:06:43 PM
Hi joe! ha!
richard lyons:) 5:09:13 PM

Lizbot (host) 5:11:01 PM

richard lyons:) 5:11:55 PM
hell oooo!!!
richard lyons:) 5:12:23 PM
great out the gate!
Lizbot (host) 5:13:03 PM
@richard lyons :) - Thanks!
Lizbot (host) 5:15:27 PM
@joe - a singular math or maths, as the brits say? because i'd be happy with zero maths of any kind
Travis in TechniColor ado 5:16:15 PM
Speaking of Pi, Pizza for dinner!
Travis in TechniColor ado 5:16:49 PM
No maths required!
Lizbot (host) 5:17:16 PM
@richard lyons :) / Travis in TechniColor ado - Despite the mid-70s sunny warm weather here, we had a bonkers hail storm just a few days ago!
Lizbot (host) 5:17:44 PM
@Travis in TechniColor ado - I might have to follow your example and hit up a princeton PI after this!
Travis in TechniColor ado 5:18:52 PM
Hail is worse than snow. Our hail season is right around the corner though
richard lyons:) 5:19:08 PM
heck yeah! 🍕pie day
Lizbot (host) 5:20:26 PM
@Travis in TechniColor ado - It's been windy and haily cuz of the insane temperature fluctuations!
Carlos Ramone. 5:23:16 PM
@liz…WPRB bottle opener helped kick off the outdoor beer drinking season a few minutes ago
Lizbot (host) 5:23:58 PM
You heard it directly from Louis Prima - "You MUST have pizza-oli" for PI Day!
Lizbot (host) 5:24:38 PM
Hi Carlos Ramone.!
Lizbot (host) 5:25:07 PM
@Carlos Ramone. - Nice! Put to good use! Mine's in an honored spot on my counter, ready to go!
richard lyons:) 5:25:29 PM
saxamaphone
Avi Jay (HTID11) 5:25:51 PM
Hey @Lizbot, I was wondering if you could play Numbers by Tub Ring to celebrate the day of π properly...
Carlos Ramone. 5:25:51 PM
Also works on those pesky pull tops on cans
Avi Jay (HTID11) 5:27:03 PM
It would make driving around delivering prescriptions in NE Philly a great deal more enjoyable!!
Lizbot (host) 5:27:50 PM
Hi Avi Jay (HTID11)!
Lizbot (host) 5:28:40 PM
@Hi Avi Jay (HTID11)! - I'll see if I can find it! Driving around today in the gorgeous weather earlier today, put it seems like way more cars are on the road for the spring weather!
Lizbot (host) 5:29:50 PM
@richard lyons:) - Someone needs to invent a saxamaphone, and it should add an -oli sounds on the end of every note for Louis Prima
DSM 5:29:56 PM
Desmond ❤️‍🔥 Such a great voice
Avi Jay (HTID11) 5:30:19 PM
Thanks!!! Haha, yeah, crosstown traffic by Jimi would be super awesome if numbers can't be found. Thanks again!!
Carlos Ramone. 5:30:48 PM
@avi Jay. I did insta cart deliveries for about 3 years. WPRB kept me going on every delivery
vildachaya1 5:31:42 PM
Hey Lizbot - just checking in - thanks as always for good tunes - What was the name of the DJ who played hip hop and was quite unlike everything else - I am remembering his name was Sargent something. I liked it but he didn't last - it widened the diversity of the music. but I can't remember his dj name...
Lizbot (host) 5:31:57 PM
Hi DSM! Truly!
vildachaya1 5:33:25 PM
He'd do shout outs to people in prison... Maybe 10-15 years ago?
Lizbot (host) 5:33:37 PM
Hi vildachaya1!
Lizbot (host) 5:34:07 PM
@@vildachaya1! - You're welcome! What night was he on?
Krista KristaKrista 5:35:13 PM
Joe, I'm a matheist (math athiest) and my husband is an economist so we are a mixed faith household. He's made a delicious banana cream pie so I can't complain.
Lizbot (host) 5:35:54 PM
@DSM - I have this really happy memory of being in London when I was pregnant with my daughter in 2008 and going into a record store in Brick Lane and bonding with the clerks over the Desmond Dekker record they were playing!
Lizbot (host) 5:36:21 PM
@Avi Jay (HTID11) - That'd be a good one too! Haven't heard Crosstown traffic in ages!
vildachaya1 5:36:53 PM
I don't recall - He spoke in HipHop vernacular - Said "know what I mean" about a million times a sentence. It was a peek inside something I am not normally privvy to.
Lizbot (host) 5:37:38 PM
Hi Krista KristaKrista!
vildachaya1 5:37:42 PM
It was the last time there was a Hip Hop show on WPRB
vildachaya1 5:37:55 PM
I think...
Lizbot (host) 5:38:32 PM
@Krista KristaKrista - Dump some chocolate on that banana cream pie and it's suddenly one of favorite desserts
vildachaya1 5:38:56 PM
I'll ask Jerry tomorrow - he's older than dirt
Lizbot (host) 5:39:01 PM
@vildachaya1 - I am blanking on his name but I know who you're talking about
Lizbot (host) 5:39:42 PM
@vildachaya1 - Jerry IS old..haha, (don't tell him I said that,) BUT he started at WPRB years after I did
vildachaya1 5:41:20 PM
The Sargent? Oh wow - I have been listening a long time - would not have guessed you had seniority - DoublePlusGood has always been a anchor of the station - and I don't mean weighing it down...maybe a Pillar is a better word
Lizbot (host) 5:42:24 PM
@vildachaya1 - haha, thanks! It's been 22 years here for me
Andrew G 5:43:44 PM
Hi Lizbot! This set has been so amazingly springtimey!
Krista KristaKrista 5:44:31 PM
We have a current hip hop show on WPRB! Side b with Phil Jackson on Sunday nights
Lizbot (host) 5:44:35 PM
Hi Andrew G! Thanks! I woke up this morning kinda cranky, and then I soaked up some sun and was invigorated!
vildachaya1 5:45:13 PM
Oh right - side b - I knew that - sorry - I do catch it occasionally
Lizbot (host) 5:45:53 PM
@Krista KristaKrista / vildachaya1 - Side B Radio's been on a long time, but I am pretty sure you're talking about a couple of guys from Trenton who were on 10 years ago...wracking my brain

Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 5:47:44 PM
LOVE Sneks McGee hahaha
Lizbot (host) 5:48:28 PM
@Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum - Last week I was on during a crazy day-long pea soup fog that made me loopy and groggy! TOday the sun's curative properties charged my battery
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 5:49:01 PM
Sorry I missed y’all last week. I had a game night with a new crowd of folks in my town that I’ve cultivated.
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 5:49:38 PM
Many Bananagrams were played.
Lizbot (host) 5:50:58 PM
@Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum - Sounds fun! I like the feeling of bananagrams in my hands. Gives me the same tactile joy as Boggle cubes or Scrabble tiles. So smooooth
Lizbot (host) 5:51:37 PM
@vildachaya1 - That show is gonna come to my mind the MOMENT i get off air, i bet!
Carlos Ramone. 5:51:54 PM
@Addie..tried to get some of my neighbors into a game night. At our age nobody wants to do Twister
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 5:53:00 PM
@Lizbot and the sound of the tiles on the table! So clicky!
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 5:53:26 PM
@carlos ramone you should try cards against humanity instead!
Lizbot (host) 5:53:52 PM
@Carlos Ramone. haha, my mom had us play the same Twister mat when we were kids that she had in her swinging pad in the ealry 60s for parties!

Carlos Ramone. 5:56:41 PM
@Addie. Brewery near me had that on game night for years prior to covid
Commie Francis ☭ 5:58:30 PM
I was driving my 16 month old nephew home from daycare earlier and when I shut the car off he was yelling the beat! The beat! That was a great set!
Lizbot (host) 6:01:47 PM
Hi Commie Francis ☭!
Lizbot (host) 6:02:14 PM
Hi Rob from Maryland 🦅! I couldn't say Hi until after that mega-long mic break!

Hi Space Lady Susan bot!
Rob from Maryland 🦅 6:02:55 PM
Hi Lizbot and everyone!
Lizbot (host) 6:03:10 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦅 / @Carlos Ramone. - The Pie ID is one of the all-time best!
Lizbot (host) 6:03:13 PM
Hi Ossy!
Rob from Maryland 🦅 6:03:43 PM
We're eating quiche for dinner. That's kind of a pie
Lizbot (host) 6:04:13 PM
@Carlos Ramone. / @Addie - I played a LOT of games with the husband and kid during the first year of COvid, but I haven't gotten back into a regular game night since
Ossy 6:04:56 PM
Key lime pie and fruit tart pie is where is at
Lizbot (host) 6:05:31 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦅 - That definitely counts! I think my local co-op was offering a wider selection of quiches today, but i didn't make it in there before coming to Princeton. Maybe someone will have picked one up for me by the time I get home!
Lizbot (host) 6:05:53 PM
@Ossy - I LOVE a very tart key lime. No diner fluff on top for me!
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 6:06:55 PM
@lizbot hoping this game night becomes a regular thing. Had such a good time!
Lizbot (host) 6:07:39 PM
@Ossy - Space Lady Susan Silius Von Sydow to you!
Ossy 6:08:05 PM
Especially with oh so wittle cute cherries and fluffy whip cream icing on them!
Lizbot (host) 6:08:26 PM
@Commie Francis ☭ - OH my god! I LOVE that! Reaching the youth! Teach the children well! I hope he requests The Beat again! THanks!
Lizbot (host) 6:10:08 PM
@Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum - That's awesome! I am envious of people who keep a regular game night going! George's fam is really into game nights and he has FOUR siblings, so when we all get together, we always do big family game nights!
Lizbot (host) 6:11:49 PM
@Ossy - I am not known to turn down a cherry on top!
Lizbot (host) 6:12:46 PM
@Ossy - When I went to Florida to visit some of my husband's relatives years ago, I made sure to get some good local key lime pie! Drooling at the memory of its tartness!
Zachary S. 6:14:42 PM
Leaving work, turning on Lizbot, hearing Talking Heads… knowing it’s going to be a nice bit of music for the commute home (that Felt song also ripped).
Lizbot (host) 6:15:05 PM
Hi Zachary S.! Glad you're digging it!
Mary Jones 6:15:24 PM
Hello hello—I don’t have pie unfortunately, but we did eat pizza last night, so by the rules of Holiday Eves, I think it counts.
Lizbot (host) 6:15:37 PM
@Zachary S. - It's one of those bright early spring days when driving to upbeat music feels sublime, at least for me!
Lizbot (host) 6:15:43 PM
Hi Mary Jones!
Mary Jones 6:16:12 PM
Hello Lizbot!
Carlos Ramone. 6:16:23 PM
Musica en espanol..Que bien!!!
Ossy 6:17:08 PM
Liz - The time I was at Princeton last year after PREX and going to the shopping center, one store has some delicous spriknled rich chocolate and cheesecake covered cake and cherry pie! If there again, will bring back some of that!
Ossy 6:17:18 PM
Yeah Makeba!
Lizbot (host) 6:17:19 PM
@Mary Jones - You mean to tell me that Dennis is PIELESS ON PI Day?! Pi Eve I guess counts, but it feels like when ppl open presents on Christmas Eve...jumping the gun!
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 6:17:22 PM
Ooo, the ultimate upbeat song!
Lizbot (host) 6:18:06 PM
@Carlos Ramone. - I love The Plugz, and of course that song always reminds me of Repo Man, which I STILL need to show my 15 year-old, come to think of it! She never has any time for movies these days!
Lizbot (host) 6:18:15 PM
SHRIEK!
Mary Jones 6:18:29 PM
@Lizbot I know, it breaks the heart—but he is getting a grilled burger because of the nice weather.
Lizbot (host) 6:18:41 PM
@Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum - TRUTH! Nobody starts a party like Miriam Makeba!
Mary Jones 6:18:52 PM
Not a pie, still delicious
Lizbot (host) 6:19:17 PM
@Ossy - Mama Africa! I love this album so much. My dad had it when I was a kid
Richard from Rocky Hill 6:19:23 PM
I honestly think that "Pata Pata" by Miriam Makeba of South Africa, a huge international hit for her, is also one of THE greatest pop music recordings of all time.
Mary Jones 6:19:26 PM
Oh wow, she definitely needs to see Repo Man!
Carlos Ramone. 6:20:17 PM
Haven’t seen repo man in years..love the Aquabats song “ CD repo man “ sampling from movie at start and end of song
Lizbot (host) 6:20:38 PM
@Mary Jones - I KNOW, right?! George & I have totally given some things away from that movie...We made a Repo Man station ID and explained it to her for context!
Lizbot (host) 6:20:46 PM
Hi Richard from Rocky Hill!
Lizbot (host) 6:21:23 PM
@Richard from Rocky Hill - For real. It's so great. And so joyous. Harry Belafonte did a lot to make her a household name in this country
Lizbot (host) 6:22:35 PM
@Mary Jones - Grilled burger = meat pie, American-style, so says I! Close enough! Solid pie ball for the piebald cats and Dennises of the world
Mary Jones 6:23:28 PM
@Lizbot I’m sure there’s a way the British could consider it a pie, like call an open face beef pie
Lizbot (host) 6:23:33 PM
@Carlos Ramone. - haha, I have to find that Repo Man ID George made during the pandemic and play it today!
Avi Jay (HTID11) 6:23:39 PM
OMG @lizbot so I was walking back in to my pharmacy to drop the car key off cuz I'm done for the day, and I had the live stream going on my phone during your mic break, and the manager was like, "Oh hey, that's Liz! My sister is friends with her!"
Avi Jay (HTID11) 6:23:49 PM
I said STFU!! I'm totally dumbfounded!!! Like WTF is happening?! Strangeness abounds in the small world of this universe...
Lizbot (host) 6:24:11 PM
@Carlos Ramone. - The Aquabats appeared on the kids show Yo Gabba Gabba that my kid was into as a toddler! Great bands on that show, and Biz's Beat of the Day by Biz Markie!
Lizbot (host) 6:24:24 PM
@Carlos Ramone. - More spanish lyrics coming up
George Korein 6:24:58 PM

George Korein 6:27:26 PM
Pata Pata: is it used in any ending credits?
Lizbot (host) 6:28:05 PM
"Just like a breath of spring.."
Lizbot (host) 6:29:10 PM
@George Korein - Not that I know of, but maybe?!
Lizbot (host) 6:29:45 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦅 - Yes! I do too!! HINT, HINT, GEORGE!
Lizbot (host) 6:30:11 PM

@Avi Jay (HTID11) - I haven't been out that way in a while, but I miss that Georgian Bread place and the Uzbekistani restaurant!
Avi Jay (HTID11) 6:32:41 PM
@lizbot Ding, ding, ding... Yup, it was Joe! Hahaha
Lizbot (host) 6:32:52 PM
@George - Pata Pata apparently means "Touch Touch"
Lizbot (host) 6:34:07 PM
@Avi Jay (HTID11) haha! I last saw Joe D at The Cure show at Wells Fargo Center! I've gone to see The B-52s with him and Carey before. Was supposed to see Pavement with that whole crew last fall but got covid!
Avi Jay (HTID11) 6:34:34 PM
I'm flabbergasted
Lizbot (host) 6:37:32 PM
@Avi Jay (HTID11) - I actually thought of Suburban Pharmacy when you first mentioned making RX deliveries in NE Philly, but I didn't assume it was the very one!
Space Cowboy 6:37:55 PM
PATA PATA haven't heard that in a while - that Sagittarius sunshine pop was pretty cool
Zachary S. 6:38:04 PM
Finally off the highway… You guys made me order a pizza on pi day.
Avi Jay (HTID11) 6:38:17 PM
Anyway, I guess it goes without saying now, but just know that there is much love for you and for PRB in my neck of the woods! Thanks for all you do!!
Lizbot (host) 6:38:41 PM
@Avi Jay (HTID11) - I just texted Carey and she was amused!
Lizbot (host) 6:39:32 PM
@Avi Jay (HTID11) - Aw, gee! Thanks so much! I really appreciated that! Sometimes Carey gets away with playing Doubleplusgood in the pharmacy!
Lizbot (host) 6:39:49 PM
Hi Space Cowboy!
Lizbot (host) 6:40:20 PM
@Space Cowboy - I love Sagittarious. Short-lived band. They only had Present Tense and The Big Blue Marble albums.
Lizbot (host) 6:40:58 PM
@Zachary S.! - haha, everyone is collectively dreaming of pizzas now!
Zachary S. 6:40:59 PM
Any upcoming shows for you Lizbot?
Rob from Maryland 🦅 6:42:16 PM
Great name, Diatoms
TAndy 6:42:26 PM
Now THIS is a fair weather jam
Lizbot (host) 6:42:53 PM
@Zachary S. - A bunch. Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs played in full over the course of two nights at Town Hall in early April, The Crossing this sunday night, Caetano Veloso McCarter, but that's RIGHT after my show, DURING the Membership Drive, so it's a stretch that i'll make it!
Lizbot (host) 6:43:02 PM
Hello TAndy! True!
Lizbot (host) 6:43:23 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦅 - Great song, and CA has a brand new album out as of a week ago!
Zachary S. 6:44:32 PM
Nice. Always good to have stuff on the radar and the weather is getting good for it again.
Lizbot (host) 6:47:08 PM
@Zachary S. - Lotsa of good shows coming up this spring and summer!
Lizbot (host) 6:47:54 PM
@Zachary S. - I will be in San Juan, Puerto Rico in late March and Commie Francis will be filling in for me on the 28th. I'll see what concerts are going on there!
Mary Jones 6:49:30 PM
Ahhhh! Yes, I should spend tomorrow on a Cure binge.
Avi Jay (HTID11) 6:49:46 PM
I strongly believe that PRB should be Suburban Pharmacy's only radio station!!
Mary Jones 6:49:56 PM
@Lizbot did you know Dennis was in a Cure cover band at one point?
Lizbot (host) 6:50:32 PM
@Mary Jones - A WORTHY pursuit!
Zachary S. 6:50:45 PM
Oooh nice! Hope it’s a nice trip. Always cool just finding low key, live music too. NJ used to have a better scene for that I feel but maybe I’m just looking in the wrong places.
Lizbot (host) 6:50:51 PM
@Mary - WOT?!!! Oh man, DO tell me more!! Was this in his Tyler days?
Lizbot (host) 6:51:33 PM
@Avi Jay (HTID11) - YES! Tell them that! haha, some people might rebel!
Mary Jones 6:52:34 PM
@Lizbot either Tyler or post-Tyler, like in-between bands. Definitely before we met though.
Lizbot (host) 6:52:57 PM
@Zachary S. - Yeah, I'm gonna just see what I stumble into! I think we'll find some solid outdoor live music in San Juan!
Mary Jones 6:53:13 PM
@Lizbot he played bass
Richard from Rocky Hill 6:53:36 PM
@ Lizbot (host) Right re: Harry Belafonte helping boost Mariam Makeba's profile. And I hope the newer generations of popular music lovers will know what a HUGE star and superative multi-talent -- plus confident color line breaker -- was Belafonte (who left us April 25th of last year, age 96). How huge a star? His 1956 LP "Calypso" was _the first_ million selling album by an individual artist.
Lizbot (host) 6:53:46 PM
@Mary Jones - haha, did he sing? Guitar? I want to go back in time to a dennis Cure cover house show!
Lizbot (host) 6:55:30 PM
REPO Man station ID LOCATED
Lizbot (host) 6:56:09 PM
@Richard from Rocky Hill - Belafonte was an incredible FORCE! Amazing person!
richard lyons:) 6:58:06 PM
Thanks for The Clean tunes!
richard lyons:) 6:58:43 PM
Wearing my The Clean T shirt today :)
Mary Jones 6:58:48 PM
@Lizbot oh, Dennis tries not to sing, sadly, so he was purely the bassist. Man, I wish I’d seen any of that.
Mary Jones 6:59:07 PM
!!! Deth Elf mention!!!
Carlos Ramone. 7:00:57 PM
@liz..repo man reference on trash day..” folks throwing out a perfectly good white boy”
George Korein 7:04:57 PM
I believe that’s from Better Off Dead
Lizbot (host) 7:06:23 PM
@Carlos Ramone. - haha, I love that line, but it's from one of my other favorites, Better Off Dead! I DID show my kid that one and she loved it so much, she showed it at her 12th birthday party!
Lizbot (host) 7:06:40 PM
@richard lyons:) - Always happy to play The Clean!
Lizbot (host) 7:07:41 PM
@Mary Jones - I loved 2023's Deth Elf contribution to the marathon! The Lacey Chabert song is so catchy!
Ossy 7:07:51 PM
Makeba again!
Lizbot (host) 7:08:56 PM
@Carlos Ramone. - BUT you made me realize: There should totally be at least one Better Off Dead station ID!
Lizbot (host) 7:09:02 PM
@Ossy - It's that kinda day!
Lizbot (host) 7:09:18 PM
@Ossy - Makeba always makes me happy and it's a sunny upbeat day!
Lizbot (host) 7:10:17 PM
It's ALSO a DoublePluSparks Day!
Mary Jones 7:11:15 PM
@Lizbot Dennis has such a good ear for what’s catchy, I’m always impressed
Wes Steenson 7:11:32 PM
Pata Pata used to get played at the folk dances I attended back in the 70s. There was a dance choreographed to it. I don’t know how traditional it was.
Lizbot (host) 7:11:47 PM
I love the waltz part of this song
Lizbot (host) 7:12:37 PM
@Mary Jones - Great song-smithing is an inherent ability to some extent, i think!
Lizbot (host) 7:12:41 PM
Hi Wes!
Lizbot (host) 7:14:36 PM
@Mary Jones - I sometimes wish I could go back in time and see some of George's earlier bands live, and a gig he frequently talks about at the old Gryphon Cafe in Old City that I beliebe was his first, or maybe 2nd..definitely early...gig. He was only a teen. .He probably woudln't want me to time-travel back to see it, but too bad! I'm doing it!
Lizbot (host) 7:16:26 PM
@Wes Steenson - I'd like to see that dance! I read an interview with Makeba in which she talked about the specific South African dance she was thinking of for the song. She also said her touring band always danced to that song
Wes Steenson 7:17:00 PM
(Sings in husky voice) 🎶 Falling in love with myself again, never wanted to… What am I to do? I can’t help it…🎶
Mary Jones 7:18:00 PM
@Lizbot ha! When you’re done, I’m taking that Time Machine.
Dennis Lingg 7:18:13 PM
@liz my cure cover band was called Grinchband. We all had G names, Grimpy, Glurpy and I was Gretchen. We didn’t sing though, just played parties in the drummer’s basement.
Lizbot (host) 7:18:23 PM
@Wes Steenson - haha, mash-up with Sparks!
Lizbot (host) 7:19:01 PM
@Mary Jones - Excellent. Don't tell Dennis or George. It's a surprise!
Lizbot (host) 7:19:11 PM
@Mary Jones - Oh Rats! Dennis is on to us!
Mary Jones 7:19:23 PM
Ok, our… meat pies… are done. Enjoy the rest of the show everyone!
Lizbot (host) 7:19:31 PM
@Dennis Lingg - Grinchband!
Mary Jones 7:19:39 PM
@Lizbot foiled again!
Lizbot (host) 7:20:05 PM
@Mary Jones - I wanna chomp meat pie, American-style whilst listening to Grinchband for my Pi Night dinner post-show
Wes Steenson 7:22:43 PM
@Lizbot I found a video of the Pata Pata dance. I’ll post it on your FB.
Laura Loewen 7:22:46 PM
Maybe work on pronouncing Kraftwerk (Croft vairk)
Laura Loewen 7:23:40 PM
I'm only saying it because you said you should work on German pronunciation-- sorry, that was probably obnoxious.
Lizbot (host) 7:24:01 PM
@Laura Loewen - I will have to master that before I make it to Dusseldorf to stalk Ralf!
Laura Loewen 7:24:36 PM
It's really okay not to!
TAndy 7:24:39 PM
Today I learned how Kraftwerk is meant to be pronounced!
Lizbot (host) 7:24:58 PM
@Laura Loewen - Oh, I take no offense! I have no German skills! I should have learned something from my German grandmom, but all I learned was some of her recipes
Lizbot (host) 7:25:30 PM
@TAndy - And that's just one of the many services our listeners provide here at WPRB Chat!
Laura Loewen 7:25:47 PM
I mean, where do you draw that line? I think it'd be so annoying to pronounce everything the way they say it where it comes from. Volkswagen= folks vahgen....
Laura Loewen 7:26:11 PM
ooh, German recipes
Lizbot (host) 7:26:36 PM
@Wes Steenson - Nice! Thanks!!
Laura Loewen 7:28:02 PM
Sometimes I wish there were a "like" button in this chat.
Lizbot (host) 7:28:10 PM
@Laura Loewen - True! My husband is always making a case for not trying to go out of the way to pronounce everything the way they say it when visiting another country, but I think it's good to maybe meet locals halfway...UNLESS it's a language I've studied and want to put to use and improve with, like Spanish
Lizbot (host) 7:29:59 PM
@Laura Loewen - My husband always makes fun of my Spanish lisp. but a spent a good chunk of time in Madrid in my early 20s and I can't resist a Madrileňo "th"! Especially how they say "Ztharagoztha!"
Wes Steenson 7:30:06 PM
I think it’s Krahft-Verhk. (The e sound in werk is something you have to hear - there’s nothing quite like it in English.
Wes Steenson 7:30:57 PM
“ ) “
Laura Loewen 7:31:58 PM
@wes steenson I think Verhk and vairk both are close as you can get, especially if you hit the R as if you had a speech impediment (don't hit it hard)
Lizbot (host) 7:32:27 PM
@Wes Steenson - I can hear it in my head. And then there are various dialects. My grandmom spoke in a Schwäbisch dialect.
Laura Loewen 7:33:15 PM
@lizbot Yeah, idk. I think if you're in another place, it's nice to say things the way they do (but not necessary), but here at home it just seems pretentious. "I'd like a panino, please."
Lizbot (host) 7:33:26 PM
I love these hand claps coming up...
Laura Loewen 7:33:43 PM
Oh, Schwäbish is a whole nother thing
Lizbot (host) 7:33:52 PM
"I'm just a great composer, and not a violent man." Stephin Merritt cracks me up
Lizbot (host) 7:34:47 PM
Speaking of the Brill Building songwriting era ,Holland–Dozier–Holland!
Wes Steenson 7:35:23 PM
Oh, I missed seeing The House That Jack Built (Aretha Franklin)! Has an excellent bass part - by Chuck Rainey, I think…?
Lizbot (host) 7:35:24 PM
@Laura Loewen - Yeah, THAT"s my excuse for not learning any German! I am sticking to that!
Lizbot (host) 7:36:56 PM
@Laura Loewen / @Wes Steenson - But at least I had some pretty great homemade Spätzle growing up! My grandmom's family also 100% adapted to their South Jersey environs and loved a scrapple breakfast and pork roll sandwiches
Laura Loewen 7:37:48 PM
YUM Spätzle.
Lizbot (host) 7:39:07 PM
@Wes Steenson - I love that song! One of my favorite Aretha songs. She had some incredible session musicians on her recordings, including Duane Allman on guitar on "The Weight"!
Lizbot (host) 7:40:15 PM
@Laura Loewen - Now I'm drooling at the thought. Also, my mom and grandmom are responsible for making me like marzipan, which I am perpetually told by my husband and daughter is unacceptably gross. What have they got against almonds?!
Wes Steenson 7:42:27 PM
Yes- German dialects are fun! My mother and her parents spoke both German and English. When I started taking German as my language major in high school they told me “you’re going to learn the High German, not our platte Deutsch.” After a couple of years I could just begin to understand my grandparents and their friends, but speaking their lingo would have taken years. Our mother never wanted my sister and I to learn German - she insisted her children were going to be Americans.
Lizbot (host) 7:43:43 PM
"When we meet for pie, you're an hour late"...cuz Pi Day falls so close to the beginning of Daylight Savings, forgive me, Bettye!
Laura Loewen 7:44:19 PM
@Wes Steenson So many kids didn't learn their parents' language either for that reason, or so that the parents could talk without the kids understanding. Schade!
Laura Loewen 7:44:54 PM
@Lizbot have you ever made spätzle?
Lizbot (host) 7:45:35 PM
@Wes Steenson - My dad is 1st generation Irish - Cashel Glebe in Donegal - and my mom's dad was irish, but my mom's mom was German. The cousins and my aunt are in the south - Mostly Singen and Stuttgart. One cousin moved to Hamburg with his wife
Laura Loewen 7:45:44 PM
Really enjoying the show tonight, btw
Lizbot (host) 7:45:46 PM
Dig THIS!
George Korein 7:46:10 PM
Yes, Liz has made spatial. It was good.
George Korein 7:46:21 PM
Even I made spatula once
Laura Loewen 7:46:28 PM
Oh good!
Lizbot (host) 7:46:33 PM
@Laura Loewen - Thanks! Yes, spätzle is one of the only German foods I've made! Well, Ive made some desserts.
George Korein 7:46:38 PM
Dictation is not understand German noodles
Laura Loewen 7:46:43 PM
That's special!
Wes Steenson 7:47:33 PM
@Laura Loewen - It depends- I went to high school with kids who spoke fluent Italian with their grandparents! I think with our mom it had something to do with her being the daughter of German immigrants during WWII.
Laura Loewen 7:47:36 PM
It's doable. I should make it again--- been a very long time
Lizbot (host) 7:47:41 PM
@Laura Loewen - But usually I just cheat and buy the pre-made spätzle! Aldi and Wegman's both have it, as does the german shop in Peddler's Village!
George Korein 7:47:56 PM
We don’t cook food, but we can boil a noodle/we’re imbued with the knowledge that it rhymes with strudel
George Korein 7:48:17 PM
OhMAKE spaetzle? We did not
George Korein 7:48:25 PM
We boiled it
Laura Loewen 7:48:44 PM
@Wes Steenson That's cool. I took a Pennsylvania German class (I'm in PA) and almost ALL the people in the class said their parents had kept it from the kids. Glad it's not universal
Laura Loewen 7:49:20 PM
@George Korein it's not too hard to make, but not when you're in a big hurry
Lizbot (host) 7:49:22 PM
@George Korein - You've boiled it, I've toiled it! (Made it from scratch!) But I don't bother with that anymore because I like the pre-made stuff
Laura Loewen 7:50:05 PM
noodle strudel poodle doodle
George Korein 7:50:07 PM
Oh, if you made it from scratch, then my “we” must be the royal we
George Korein 7:50:19 PM
Brutal!
George Korein 7:50:39 PM
Fugal kugel
Laura Loewen 7:50:48 PM
Where can I get pre-made Spätzle, I'm now pondering?
Wes Steenson 7:50:50 PM
@LizBot Also Aretha played great piano on that record. Not everyone knows that Aretha recorded her vocals while playing piano.
Laura Loewen 7:51:06 PM
I'll Google
George Korein 7:51:18 PM
You can get it at peddlers Village
George Korein 7:51:32 PM
Near Buckingham Green of Ween fame
Laura Loewen 7:51:42 PM
Oh! What a full-service place this chat is
George Korein 7:51:54 PM
I don’t think I want to write even 9.6 hate songs
Laura Loewen 7:51:58 PM
I'm not too far from there--- in Upper Bucks
Ossy 7:52:08 PM
Cuba Gooding sr on repeat and lovely show, Spacebot!
George Korein 7:52:10 PM
Hopskipjump
Ted 7:52:36 PM
Have you heard DJ Marina Organ of England's Resonance FM? She does a serious prog show; on the last show I heard she played Make A Rising and Cheer-Accident. Sounds like a BritBot colleague.
Wes Steenson 7:53:02 PM
@George K - careful, you’re giving away some great lyrics here…
Lizbot (host) 7:53:29 PM
@Laura Loewen - Wegman's international aisle has bags of pre-made Spätzle, Aldi has it, and the German store (name escaping me) in Peddler's Village, (which is also great for finding all the flavors of Ritter chocolate you can usually only find in Germany,) plus LOTS of marzipan!
Lizbot (host) 7:54:07 PM
Hi Ted!
Lizbot (host) 7:54:37 PM
@George Korein - The Delgados had a similar idea when they made All You Need Is Hate
Wes Steenson 7:55:07 PM
Good night everyone!
Lizbot (host) 7:55:57 PM
@Ted - No, but that sounds VERY up my alley! Oh wow!! Crazy she played those two bands! I don't know a lot of people who know Cheer-Accident, but ESPECIALLY not Make a Rising!
Lizbot (host) 7:56:16 PM
@Ossy - Thanks, Space OSsy! Spossy?!
Laura Loewen 7:56:24 PM
@Lizbot thank you!
Lizbot (host) 7:57:25 PM
@Laura Loewen - I used to doodle around with noodle strudel but now I take a short cut and get it straight from the bag!
Lizbot (host) 7:58:18 PM
@Laura Loewen - I ALSO used to bake homemade pretzels...I MISS those! I haven't done that since Hattie was little, but I want to do it again! I can almost smell the kitchen in my mind when those are baking!
Laura Loewen 7:58:20 PM
I want to make strudel from scratch just once
Laura Loewen 7:58:27 PM
Fehrenbach
Laura Loewen 7:58:50 PM
Ooh pretzels! I made decent bagels once
Laura Loewen 7:59:27 PM
I'm hungry now! Gonna cook once show ends
Ted 7:59:34 PM
Marina's shows are on Mixcloud. Playlists are at otherrockshow.wordpress.com
Ted 7:59:51 PM
Also I really liked The Clean!
Lizbot (host) 8:00:25 PM
@Ted - Nice! Wow, I gotta talk to her!
Rob from Maryland 🦅 8:00:50 PM
Thank you, Lizbot!
Lizbot (host) 8:01:06 PM
'Night all! I SHOULD be back next week! Then off to Puerto Rico!
