Sangita Kalanidhi Sudha Raghunathan (born 1956) has been a star Carnatic performer for over four decades. She was trained by the legend, Sangita Kalanidhi Dr. M. L. Vasanthakumari and was her vocal accompaniment for concerts. Recipient of numerous awards, Sudha Raghunathan is known for adherence to the GNB bani handed down by her Guru and sense of aesthetics in concert attire and performance.

Shabana Azmi (born 1950) is a well known Bollywood actress, star, activist, and has received rave reviews and awards for her acting roles in film, theater and television.

Pandit Venkatesh Kumar (born 1953) learnt music from Pt. Puttaraj Gawai of the Veereshwara Punyashrama, a school in Gadag, Karnataka. He is an exponent of both the Gwalior and Kirana Gharanas. Recipient of the Kalidas Samman, Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Academy awards, Venkatesh Kumar is known for his rendition of khayals and devotionals in his signature booming voice.

Akkarai sisters, S. Subhalakshmi (born 1984) and S. Sornalatha (born 1987) are popular duo and solo violinists, accompanists and vocalists. They had their initial training under their father Akkarai S Swamynathan and later on under the celebrated Guru, P S Narayanaswamy. Subhalakshmi has performed in partnership with vocalist T M Krishna over more than a decade in India and abroad. Sornalatha is a sought after violin accompanist as well, having already performed with many top Carnatic vocalists.

Nina Burmi who goes by the name Nina Virdee trained under the husband-wife team of star Hindustani musicians Ustad Dilshad Khan and Begum Parveen Sultana. She sings in the Kirana gharana style, and is adept in khayal, thumri, bhajan, and other musical forms. She currently lives in the UK.

Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta (1933-2018) was born in Bhagalpur, Bihar, was an acclaimed Sarod player. Dasgupta’s formal training in music commenced in 1943 under Radhika Mohan Maitra. A trained Mechanical Engineer, Dasgupta was the doyen of the Senia Shahjahanpur gharana and brought a scholarly approach to music without getting too regimented. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak Academy awards.

Abby Venkatachalam who goes by the name Abby V was raised in Toronto, Canada, where he continues to live. He was introduced to music by his father early on and had further training under the Carnatic vocalist, Smt. Raji Gopalakrishnan and later on under the sisters Ranjani and Gayatri. He has won several prizes at the Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana and from Mumbai’s Shanmukhananda Sabha in multiple categories. He sings Pop, R&B, Hip-Hop, Bollywood and Indian film music, ghazals and qawwali in addition to Indian classical music.

Veena Sahasrabuddhe (born Veena Shankar Bodas in 1948). Father, was a disciple of the legendary Pt. Vishnu Digambar Paluskar. Her father Pt. Shankar Shripad Bodas and brother Pt. Kashinath Shankar Bodas were her two gurus. Other mentors include Padmashri Balwant Rai Bhatt, Pt. Vasant Thakar and Pt. Gajananbua Joshi. Holder of two Masters and a Doctoral degree in Music, Veena is widely acclaimed today as a performer of the khayal style of Indian classical singing and of moving bhajan devotional songs.

Karthick Iyer (born 1985) is a trained Carnatic violinist and is also the frontman of the band IndoSoul, which seeks to showcase commonalities of Indian and Western Classical music. Karthick has performed in the orchestras of Indian film music composers such as A R Rahman.

Ustad Bismillah Khan (1916 -2006) was a celebrated Hindustani musician and was trained in music at a young age by his father who was a Shehnai player in the court of Maharaja Keshav Prasad Singh of Dumraon. When Bismillah Khan was six years old, he went to Varanasi where he underwent further training under his uncle, Ali Baksh 'Vilayatu'. He is credited with popularizing Shehnai on the Hindustani music stage and was awarded India's highest civilian honor, Bharat Ratna.

The Malladi Brothers, Malladi Sreeramprasad (born 1971) and Malladi Ravikumar (born 1973) are Carnatic vocalists who sing together. They hail from an illustrious Andhra Pradesh musical family, training under their grandfather Srirammurthy and father Suri Babu, as well as stalwarts of Andhra Pradesh, Sangita Kalanidis Nedunuri Krishnamurthy and Sripada Pinakapani.

Sangita Kalanidhi D K Jayaraman (1928 - 1991) was an acclaimed Carnatic vocalist. Born and raised in Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, he was the primary disciple and vocal accompanist of his sister, the legendary D K Pattammal. he also learnt music from such stalwarts such as composers Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagvathar and Papanasam Sivan. Known as a generous teacher, and for his bhava laden voice and sparkling swaraprastaras, Jayaraman trained many of the popular Carnatic singers in the field today.

Thodur Madabusi Krishna (born 1976) is a top Carnatic vocalist, author and activist. He trained under distinguished gurus such as Vidwans B. Seetharama Sarma, Chengalpet Ranganathan and Sangita Kalanidhi Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. He was awarded the Raman Magsaysay award in 2016 for his activism.


Nagaswaram playing husband-wife duo Sheikh Mahboob Subhani and Begum Kaleeshabi Mahboob hail from the southern state of Andhra Pradesh and were disciples of Sangita Kalanidhi Shiekh Chinna Moulana Sahib. The couple won the “Padma Shri” honor from the Government of India in 2020. They are celebrated for their contemplative playing on the Nagaswaram which can often sound loud and blaring in the hands of lesser players.

Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh traces her ancestry back to a prestigious Carnatic musical family. She learnt from her mother and her aunt, both sisters of the violin maestro, Lalgudi Jayaraman. She received further training in the veena from Dr. S. Balachander. She is a top star international performer and has been awarded numerous honors for her performances, compositions and research work. She gives solo veena concerts and also plays in partnership with her violinist husband R. Kumaresh.

R. Kumaresh (b 1967) is a violinist and the the younger of the violinist duo Ganesh – Kumaresh. He learnt music from his father T S Rajagopalan and went on to perform with his brother on the concert circuit. He has composed music for films and for the Grammy winning band Sakthi.

Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (born 1950) learnt music from his parents who were both teachers and performers of Hindustani music. Pt Vishwa Mohan Bhatt is an international performer of repute who is credited with popularizing the new instrument 'Mohan Veena' or Slide Guitar which he created to play Hindustani music on. Mohan Veena has the ‘gayaki’ and 'tantrakari' elements making it unique and has given a new scope for mellifluous fusion of Indian classical and western music. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt has garnered numerous awards including a Grammy, Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak Academy awards.
