Welcome to monday Jazz!
Marcus Watt 12:09:29 PM
Thank you. I feel welcomed.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:10:16 PM
Hey Marcus! Happy Lee Marvin's 100 birthday!
Marcus Watt 12:22:45 PM
Didn't know that. Just this morning my neighbor mentioned watching The Dirty Dozen yesterday, and I praised John C. and Lee.
TAndy 12:24:48 PM
Good afternoon! Banger of a track right there
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:26:40 PM
Hey Tandy!
Marcus Watt 12:31:18 PM
Please tell Gloria Grahame to duck.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:31:42 PM
Poor Gloria! She gets her revenge!
Russell Woessner 12:31:43 PM
James Brandon Lewis will be performing at Solar Myth in Philly on March 30: https://www.arsnovaworkshop.org/programs/the-messthetics-and-james-brandon-lewis/
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:32:06 PM
Yeah, I'm hitting JBL up for an interview...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:33:07 PM
Also saw trailers this morning for EMPEROR OF THE NORTH and THE GREAT SCOUT & CATHOUSE TUESDAY, oh and SPIKE'S GANG...
Kevin L 12:45:53 PM
wow. This is car driving music!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:46:52 PM
Yeah, busy jazz is great for speeding on 95...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:47:51 PM
this cut features DoYeon Kim on the gayagum, the Korean string instrument...
Kevin L 12:48:04 PM
I wrote cruising music at first but language has changed.
Kevin L 12:48:52 PM
I guess i could listen to this in public bathrooms.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:49:03 PM
I was big on the Cruisin' oldies comps, with the DJ's included....
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:49:25 PM
No judgement here!
Kevin L 12:49:30 PM
Radar Love was my first
Marcus Watt 12:50:38 PM
Wasn't a Philly DJ on one of the Crusin's?
Marcus Watt 12:55:24 PM
Joe Niagara. The Internet is something.
Kevin L 12:56:15 PM
I remeber Joe Niagra!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:56:38 PM
Philly Legend!
Kevin L 12:57:45 PM
He later played oldies from the 30's 40's and 50's on ... I can't remember the name of the station
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:59:12 PM
The Rockin' Bird!
Marcus Watt 1:00:02 PM
The WIBG lineup circa 1967 was Jerry Stevens, Bill Wright Sr., Joe Niagara, Hy Lit, and Frank X. Feller.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:00:03 PM
He was on WPEN "Station of the Stars" until his retirement in 1999...
Kevin L 1:01:39 PM
I worked with a guy from the WWII era. He got to listen to (that's it!) WPEN in the morning and i listened to my music in the afternoon.
Kevin L 1:02:39 PM
Frank Sinatra every day at 11am was unnerving to me but now i miss the times
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:03:16 PM
I was a big PEN listener, it got me into big band, gateway to jazz. I only had an AM radio in my first car, a '66 Beetle...
Kevin L 1:05:12 PM
I owned an old Chevy pick up that only had AM. I hear certain songs now and it reminds me of it. Pina Colada song comes to mind.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:07:22 PM
Shipp's beating the hell out of A Train...
Kevin L 1:10:17 PM
I heard a Matthew Shipp duo album on WPRB in the nineties and only in the last 5 years i was able to buy it
Kevin L 1:10:37 PM
It didn't exist online
Kevin L 1:12:49 PM
WPRB used to have a jazz robot late at night with no dj to say what song I heard and it drive me crazy that i couldn't find out about a song i liked
Kevin L 1:13:07 PM
...not a far drive
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:13:12 PM
Robots are the bane of our existence...
Marcus Watt 1:13:35 PM
In 1968 Hy Lit moved to WDAS, playing Hendrix, Cream among others. Not a great fit. Search Hyski Underground for a brief history. Steve Leon, Michael Tearson, Steve Martorano among others appeared before WMMR clobbered them.
Kevin L 1:13:57 PM
It played good music but would repeat itself over the nights
Kevin L 1:14:36 PM
Was WDAS a non commercilal station back then?
Kevin L 1:14:59 PM
I think my older brother listened to it
Marcus Watt 1:17:31 PM
Kevin, I think not, but very few commercials.
Kevin L 1:18:36 PM
I was young back then and wasn't used to the long songs WDAS would play
Kevin L 1:23:06 PM
I found a website that has the history of WDAS and Ed Sciaky was a DJ then. I was trying to remember his name for years. He had a shoe on WIOQ every Sunday night.
Kevin L 1:23:16 PM
...show
Kevin L 1:24:08 PM
Another ECM great!
Kevin L 1:24:51 PM
If I find an ECM record at Goodwill I buy it.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:25:23 PM
You used to find ECM vinyl dirt cheap but places are smartening up...
Kevin L 1:27:23 PM
Goodwill used to be good, yeah. It was priced so low I could take a chance on an unknown scratched up album.
Russell Woessner 1:28:42 PM
Meatball Fulton satirized Hy Lit’s tenure at WDAS on his show on WUHY. Called him Toi Lit.
Kevin L 1:28:55 PM
used ECM records tended to be taken care of much like classical records.
Marcus Watt 1:29:24 PM
I have Where Fortune Smiles. Surman, John M. , Dave H., Karl Berger.
Kevin L 1:32:01 PM
There is a sax player on ECM who's tone makes my blood run cold. He plays with a lot of others there too.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:32:28 PM
Jan Gabarek?
Kevin L 1:33:10 PM
That's it! He is probably good but it's me.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:36:10 PM
I have the sane reaction. i rarely play him. he's probably why I have a prejudice against ECM European roster...
Marcus Watt 1:36:42 PM
My Where Fortune Smiles is a 1975 reissue, but my Extrapolation with The Two Johns is a first edition.
Kevin L 1:36:43 PM
H'es on so many ECM albums
Marcus Watt 1:37:55 PM
Eberhard Weber's albums are great.
TAndy 1:38:06 PM
Ah this is excellent
Kevin L 1:38:36 PM
Yes, good music today TAndy
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:38:53 PM
Thanks Kevin!
Marcus Watt 1:41:52 PM
Did anyone see Mary Halvorson? Short walk for you Dan.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:47:49 PM
Alas, I had Bright Bulb that night, stopped by after and talked to some friends who saw the show, had big thumbs up!
Kevin L 1:49:13 PM
I have to go out and see some live bands. I haven't in years.
Kevin L 1:53:28 PM
I can't see very well at night to drive.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:57:49 PM
Make a friend drive!
Kevin L 1:58:24 PM
My friends aren't into Jazz.
Kevin L 1:59:42 PM
I have a question about a jazz song I used to hear on WPRB. Maybe someone here can help.
Marcus Watt 1:59:55 PM
I'm with Kevin on the driving thing. I take septa when I can't find an accomplice.
Kevin L 2:00:35 PM
Wish iI lived in city
Marcus Watt 2:03:28 PM
Great music. Thanks to Jack White?
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:04:43 PM
Yep!
Marcus Watt 2:23:28 PM
Brian Protheroe? You certainly know some obscure acts. But I have a copy of Bad Rice by Ron Nagle.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:26:17 PM
Don't know that one. Love Protheroe's "Pinball"
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:26:41 PM
Here's an obscure group...
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:28:26 PM
P.P. Arnold covered this one...
Marcus Watt 2:36:28 PM
Ruben's best known film is The Milagro Beanfield War, directed by Redford.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:37:43 PM
Yes! I should see his big 80s vehicle CROSSOVER DREAMS...
Marcus Watt 2:45:39 PM
Damon and Helios!
Kevin L 2:47:14 PM
I saw the Milagro Beanfield War in the eighties and liked it. I looked it up and I'm surprised critics panned it.
Marcus Watt 2:49:47 PM
I bought Half Machine Lip Moves from Third Street, but it was warped. Jerry replaced it. Great store.
Kevin L 2:53:43 PM
When I'd go to Philly I'd go to a used record store on Second near all the pubs and didn't know there was a great record store nearby.
iamthelabhras 2:54:30 PM
AKA?
iamthelabhras 2:54:57 PM
Also, for the record, can we all agree Dr. Zaius was our nation's greatest President?
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:57:39 PM
Yes!
Kevin L 2:58:12 PM
Great show, Thanks Dan!
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:58:27 PM
Thanks for checking in Kevin!
TAndy 2:58:59 PM
See ya next week!
Dan Buskirk (host) 3:00:32 PM
Thanks! Next Time!
