Good morning, friends! The sun rises in ~17 minutes!
Brian D 7:13:11 AM
Lasers
Dan Ruccia (host) 7:14:10 AM
Lasers + adding + subtracting = sunrise?
Dan Ruccia (host) 7:14:44 AM
Apparently the calculator they used to make these sounds, actually plays a melody not unlike the one there when you push the square root button
Brian D 7:16:47 AM
Cold, calculated
Amy Lee 7:17:04 AM
I will let the keyboard fake my enthusiasm for mornings (while I scowl in my dimly lit office). Good morning! Music helps.
Dan Ruccia (host) 7:20:17 AM
Morning Amy!
Dale Hazelton 7:23:30 AM
morning. a toe tapper from courtney.
Dan Ruccia (host) 7:25:08 AM
Morning Dale! Was there anyone better at this kind of witty rambler in the mid 2010s than her?
Brian D 7:38:52 AM
Don Cherry!
Dale Hazelton 7:42:46 AM
i still have my texas instruments calculator from 1977. no bleeps or bloops though.
Brian D 7:43:06 AM
Lovely sunrise today
Brian D 7:45:36 AM
I can smell that ozone like odor from my old TI 1970s calculator. Very basic for a kid type of calculator. Not one of those integral function ones that came later. Had one of those in high school. Used it maybe a dozen times ha. But that old one.. used many many times
Dan Ruccia (host) 7:46:13 AM
A friend looped me in to this wild YouTube series about assorted musical calculators. Here's the one on the Kraftwerk calculator: https://youtu.be/4O6i9A1b28Q?si=s3L3htOWeUp7A60Z
Brian D 7:51:41 AM
Oh definitely could get into that!
Dale Hazelton 7:52:25 AM
there was a short-lived radio program called 'pocket calculator' on shortwave station wbcq where a couple of guys would go shopping at flea markets and on canal street in nyc. they were into calcs, and watchmans and walkmans and digital watches. it was nerdy but fun. their website is still up but hasn't been touched in a long time.

A band calling themselves Sleater-Kinney may have released an album this week, but it ain't Sleater-Kinney if Janet Weiss isn't on drums.
Dale Hazelton 8:14:20 AM
digging the SLIFT.
Dan Ruccia (host) 8:15:26 AM
Yeah, they're new to me this week, but they seem pretty great. Apparently their earlier records are more like Thee Oh Sees style garage rockers (which you can still kinda hear here)
Brian D 8:18:46 AM
SLIFT was a bit F-d Up-ish ya as in both the band and style
Brian D 8:20:08 AM
That accent there ha. Bwight so shiny sko
Brian D 8:22:03 AM
A forkful of up
DJ Pup 8:26:30 AM
Rip Phill Niblock! And good mornin chat land :) Great show this morning Dan
Brian D 8:26:43 AM
Don't even tell me about the Unmentionable Piece for Trombone and Sousaphone.... best left unsaid
Dan Ruccia (host) 8:26:51 AM
Hey DJ Pup!
Dan Ruccia (host) 8:27:36 AM
We don't talk about [the unmentionable piece for trombone and sousaphone], no, no, no
DJ Pup 8:27:41 AM
Tunin in from my kitchen table radio with a big bowl of oatmeal and my coffee, I’m locked in for the ride
Brian D 8:27:45 AM
Hope to see return of DJs Pup and Dan R someday
Dan Ruccia (host) 8:28:12 AM
Not this season for me, unfortunately. Probably later this year, though
DJ Pup 8:28:29 AM
You’re in luck Brian haha, starting Feb 4th I’ll be weekly again, Sundays 3-5pm :)
Brian D 8:29:34 AM
And big Fantasy DJs Draft picks: Will C and Mickey Sprawl. And Worried Waltzer but... dreams n such
Dan Ruccia (host) 8:29:53 AM
PS: The new season starts on Monday! Not sure when it'll get posted on wprb.com, but it should be soon!
Brian D 8:30:12 AM
Great news Pup! Wonder if KPC returns... that sometimes happens in Feb
Brian D 8:31:08 AM
Ya I keep "fast-forwarding" through the calendar grid to check but still blank squares as of yet
TAndy 8:34:32 AM
Ohi Dan and Brian and Pup. I shouted in excitement at your announcement on IG, DJ Pup lol
DJ Pup 8:34:57 AM
🙏
Dan Ruccia (host) 8:36:20 AM
This is a piece where I feel like I really need a subwoofer. It probably rumbles like crazy
DJ Pup 8:36:41 AM
Throughout the season I’ll chant to myself “Tomorrow needs more Octopus” to manifest the show’s return
Dan Ruccia (host) 8:37:38 AM
The main reason I'm not this spring/summer is because I'm adding on to my house, so it'll be too noisy to do radio regularly. Gonna try to keep subbing when I can, though
Brian D 8:41:55 AM
Car alarm is on dude
TAndy 8:43:58 AM
Ahh, Cross-Bronx Expressway ASMR
Dan Ruccia (host) 8:44:27 AM
LOL TAndy
TAndy 8:45:54 AM
🧐
DJ Pup 8:46:25 AM
Are you adding a radio tower to the house
Dan Ruccia (host) 8:46:46 AM
How'd you know??
TAndy 8:47:56 AM
That's some dedication. All you'll hear is radio blah blah
Dan Ruccia (host) 8:48:19 AM
Can't let Jon Solomon have the human radio station monopoly
DJ Pup 8:48:32 AM
If it links to our radio tower we will begin the Atlantic Coast tower network
DJ Pup 8:48:45 AM
🤣
DJ Pup 8:50:08 AM
“From Keywest to Portland (Maine)” radio domination
Dan Ruccia (host) 8:50:36 AM
We can become the eastern seaboard's only radio station
DJ Pup 8:51:33 AM
Now thats a superlative, like a reverse polarity to Clear Channel’s grip
DJ Pup 8:52:41 AM
Reclaiming FM
DJ Pup 8:53:07 AM
Does anyone else put cayenne powder in their coffee?
TAndy 8:54:36 AM
No but I should. If raw cinnamon in coffee tastes great, cayenne has to.
DJ Pup 8:55:07 AM
TAndy you’re in north Cali right? I saw major flooding in San Diego this morning, hope you’re in dry land!
DJ Pup 8:55:58 AM
Ive never tried cinnamon in coffee but I can see the appeal! I put the cayenne powder in the grinds when I do my pourover, so the drink itself is very clean and not grainy
TAndy 8:56:25 AM
Naw I'm in Central Jersey |:) I was only visiting NorCal that one time
DJ Pup 8:56:37 AM
Ohhh gotcha
TAndy 8:57:08 AM
Funnily enough I only had cinnamon in coffee from my friend's mother in socal. She made instant coffee taste delicious. I swear, parents always know how to make bad food taste good.
TAndy 8:57:50 AM
I see the shakers at Wawa though so it's not an uncommon thing
DJ Pup 8:59:06 AM
They sure do. After years of trying fancy coffee, still nothing quite like my neighbor’s parents brewing Chock Full O Nuts in a $20 machine
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:00:53 AM
I feel like I read something about Steve Albini and Electric Audio having a coffee style that involved cinnamon being mixed in with the dry espresso
DJ Pup 9:03:00 AM
I could see that working really well! I mean I also love chickory in coffee
DJ Pup 9:03:23 AM
This isn’t a song request, but have you heard this album from the end of last year?
DJ Pup 9:03:30 AM
https://chuquimamani-condori.bandcamp.com/album/dj-e
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:04:03 AM
Oh yeah, I saw it on a handful of end of year lists and it's totally weird and great
iamthelabhras 9:04:21 AM
You had me at "musimathics" @Dan Ruccia.
DJ Pup 9:04:30 AM
Not for the faint of heart, but it broke my brain in a surprisingly fun way. Some of the songs are the closest musical experiences to disassociation I’ve heard in recent songings
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:04:58 AM
I may have to put it on again later today...
DJ Pup 9:05:01 AM
Oh hell yeah! Glad it made it to some lists :) very bizarre and great time
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:05:26 AM
Hi iamthelabhras! Glad you're enjoying!!
DJ Pup 9:05:53 AM
I’ll be playing the track “Return” for my RETURN show mwahhahaha
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:07:18 AM
Nice!
DJ Pup 9:14:08 AM
I feel like this song, like the Niblock piece, would benefit from having a sub in the soundsystem
TAndy 9:14:15 AM
This rules
DJ Pup 9:14:21 AM
Feels very earth rumbly
TAndy 9:14:40 AM
Dude my dad only drinks chock full o nuts
TAndy 9:14:58 AM
Cheap coffeemaker and all, it werks
DJ Pup 9:15:21 AM
Sure does
DJ Pup 9:15:48 AM
https://media.npr.org/assets/img/2023/05/26/honest-work-meme-cb0f0fb2227fb84b77b3c9a851ac09b095ab74d8-s1100-c50.jpg
DJ Pup 9:17:46 AM
Wow I've never heard this era of Nico, very cool
DJ Pup 9:18:00 AM
Reminds me of Berlin-trilogy Bowie musically
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:18:29 AM
The album also includes bonkers covers of "Waiting for the Man" and "Heroes"
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:18:54 AM
And apparently has a very complicated recording/release history because she was such a junkie at that point
TAndy 9:24:10 AM
Aaaagh this rules too. Brings me back to when you had like three straight weeks of brooding foreboding music like this
DJ Pup 9:25:15 AM
Precursor to the battle at Helm's Deep
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:26:30 AM
It reminds me that I need to listen to the Marthe record again
DJ Pup 9:28:01 AM
I now have a Bandcamp tab open with Marthe, thanks for the rec!
Moka Demus & Pliers 9:31:11 AM
heh some girl at work has a Pissed Jeans sticker on her bumper
Dale Hazelton 9:32:15 AM
wee'ed jeans. tinkled trousers.
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:33:23 AM
wee'ed jeans! Love it. I suppose then we'd have to create a stoner metal Pissed Jeans cover band called Weed Jeans
Moka Demus & Pliers 9:35:19 AM
unless they meant it be Angry Jeans
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:37:03 AM
Even so, I think our stoner metal cover band still works?
Moka Demus & Pliers 9:38:26 AM
👍
Brian D 9:53:12 AM
In Scotland they'd have Wee Jeanies
Brian D 9:53:44 AM
Then we go to Weed Genie... and is that a band name already? It has to be right? And so forth
DJ Pup 9:53:58 AM
Thanks for the radio'ing Dan! Looking forward to the return of the Octopus
Brian D 9:54:02 AM
Just so we have that straight
Dale Hazelton 9:54:04 AM
thanks for the tunage.
Amy Lee 9:54:23 AM
Thank for the great show Dan!
Brian D 9:54:30 AM
World she turn.
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:54:38 AM
Gonna have to ask Captain Ahab if there's a Weed Genie
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:54:46 AM
Thanks for listening everyone!
Jon Solomon 9:54:58 AM
Wow, Pissed Jeans into SPRINTS is the one-two this morning requires!
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:55:17 AM
I thought that combo might summon you, Jon!
Jon Solomon 9:55:27 AM
Belatedly, I am here.
Brian D 9:55:28 AM
Love the old vinyl cover of On the Beach that has the same print as the beach umbrella inside instead of plain brown gray cardboard.
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:55:41 AM
I know, Brian! I was so delighted to see that when I got my copy
Jon Solomon 9:55:48 AM
(My Celibate Rifles Google Alert went off.)
Brian D 9:56:01 AM
Reading "Shakey" again. Third time. Charmed sure
DJ Pup 9:56:20 AM
"My Google Alert brought me here" bumper sticker
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:56:30 AM
I also love how the bass on this sounds about as close to a sousaphone as you can get
Dan Ruccia (host) 9:56:43 AM
Waiting for the brass band cover of this
TAndy 9:57:12 AM
Many thanks for the show Dan! Big love to Kendall for a hell of a season too :)
Brian D 9:58:20 AM
Some great bass players on this lp. Tim Drummond here. Long Neil fave. Billy Talbot on another song from the Horse. Rick Danko on another. Such a great lp
Brian D 9:59:03 AM
"Honey slides" - not recommended for studio alertness
VS Anderson 10:02:10 AM
You can always rely on Neil
