Hello! Welcome to Monday Jazz!
Marcus Watt 12:14:52 PM
Hi, Dan. I'm sure you know Mary Halvorson is coming to Solar Myth in a few weeks. Ethnic Heritage Ensemble the night before and Nels Cline the night after.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:16:11 PM
Ches Smith with an all-star line-up as well.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:16:49 PM
Thinking about tracking down Mary or James Brandon Lewis for an interview before the show...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:17:12 PM
New Ethnic Heritage Ensemble cut coming up...
Marcus Watt 12:18:06 PM
Ches is in March, followed by Tim Berne
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:40:16 PM
These acts sporadically got to Philly before Solar Myth, what a boon for the scene...
Marcus Watt 12:43:27 PM
I wish I live as close to there as you do. I can get there sometimes.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:46:43 PM
Just plucked something from their record bin Saturday...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:49:21 PM
That incredible CTI band here: Herbie, Ron Carter, Grady Tate, George Benson with JJ&K....
Bud Burroughs 12:54:03 PM
This sounds great, that's a helluva house band!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:56:51 PM
This record was only released in Japan till an edition came out on record store day a few years back. Funny that a small population like Japan's had a bigger market for this stuff than the U.S....
Marcus Watt 1:00:54 PM
That's not new. Some of David Murray's best albums with Dave Burrell were only available on DIW.
Bud Burroughs 1:01:49 PM
Yeah, Europe and Asia kept a lot of American jazz musicians gainfully employed.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:12:37 PM
I think A lot of modern players make their nut by teaching and touring Europe in the summer...
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:13:21 PM
The 2010s was for buying all the used DIW releases that I couldn't afford new in the '90s...
Marcus Watt 1:17:55 PM
I hope you snagged Spirituals and Deep River. Huge fan of Dave Burrell.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:24:11 PM
I do believe I have both of those...
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:24:26 PM
Burrell is the complete player
Marcus Watt 1:39:05 PM
I hadn't heard A Spencer Barefield in many years. 30 years ago a long forgotten DJ on WRTI named E. Martin Seaborne played his music.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:43:51 PM
Tani Tabbal is a facebook friend, he's played a lot with the Art Ensemble in recent years...
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:49:41 PM
Smaller group here than on their studio records, Rob Mazurek trumpet, piccolo trumpet, bells, voice, Damon Locks voice, electronics, text, Tomeka Reid cello, electronics, Angelica Sanchez Wurlitzer electric piano, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten double bass, Chad Taylor drums
Matt Sabbath 1:59:02 PM
Noice chunes Dan!
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:01:57 PM
Thanks Matt!
Marcus Watt 2:02:21 PM
At midnight Saturday, Seaborne hosted a show, Point of Departure, named after an Andrew Hill album. Excellent. When he wasn't available, Ludwig Van Trikt, the guy who ran the Painted Bride jazz shows, and the late Richard Nichols filled in. I have cassette recordings.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:02:41 PM
Sounds great!
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:03:23 PM
I listened to jazz on RTI back in the day, but not much of XPN's Blue Genesis...
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:06:35 PM
"Song of the Siren", this week's 12" spinning at 45...
Marcus Watt 2:07:47 PM
I remember Jules Epstein. Blue Genesis.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:09:59 PM
There's a familiar name. Wonder what happened to him?
Marcus Watt 2:12:33 PM
Jules is a well respected lawyer.
Russell Woessner 2:13:17 PM
https://law.temple.edu/contact/jules-epstein/
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:14:08 PM
Disappointing comedown from the status of "jazz DJ"...
Marcus Watt 2:15:30 PM
Good joke, Dan.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:18:09 PM
Hee-Hee...
Marcus Watt 2:19:37 PM
Both Jules and Russ are very well respected in Philadelphia
Russell Woessner 2:21:55 PM
I know “well-respected lawyer” is regarded as an oxymoron by many, but Jules is one of the good guys.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:25:31 PM
No disrespect intended...
Gautham Kalva 2:34:36 PM
Thanks Dan. Loved that Townes track. Do you recommend any other newish/under-the-radar songwriters?
Marcus Watt 2:37:58 PM
I have a Townes record. For the sake of the song.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:38:09 PM
I'm drawing a blank. Like I said at the break, Iused to listen to tons of that kinda stuff, today, almost none, 'cept for maybe old favorites like Townes...
Bud Burroughs 2:45:55 PM
Jason Isbell is my current favorite in that realm.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:47:11 PM
I've heard good things!
Travis in Color ado 2:47:43 PM
This song is so period to the early 80s. sounds like Beat Street or Breakin soundtrack
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:49:57 PM
That electro sound!
Marcus Watt 2:55:30 PM
I get that several other WPRB djs play The Wedding Present, or Mission of Burma, or Tripod Jimmie, so please play whatever you want
Dan Buskirk (host) 3:00:06 PM
Thanks to all!
