Sonic Seasonings + East Side Digital 1998

Born in Pawtucket, RI, on 14 November 1939, Wendy Carlos developed a significant interest in both music and technology. At the age of 10 she composed her first piece of music and at 14 built a small computer which won her a Westinghouse Science Fair scholarship. Three years later she assembled an electronic music studio and created her first electronic musical composition via tape manipulation. She pursued her M.A. in composition under Vladimir Ussachevsky and Otto Luening at Columbia University's Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. Following her graduation, she moved to Manhattan, where she found work as a recording engineer. "Sonic Seasonings" was a landmark recording issued in 1972. The music was remastered in 1998 and rereleased with 2 bonus tracks recorded in 1986: "Aurora Borealis" and "Midnight Sun".

The song "The Man Who Was Boiled in Lead" is a version of Scottish writer John Leyden’s ballad "Lord Soulis",[7] based on the death of Scottish lord William II de Soules, who was, according to legend, killed by his tenants at Ninestane Rig in 1320 by being boiled alive while wrapped in a sheet of lead, to defeat his mastery of black magic.

Brian D 9:25:06 AM
BiL songs that would fit into Friday am maybe: "Cuz Mapfumo" from the great titled lp "From the Ladle to the Grave". That one features Steve Tibbetts on gtr as guest. Instrumental. And any Instrumental from the next lp "Orb".
Roffle 9:25:14 AM
And think fondly... lol
Brian D 9:25:47 AM

I love this time of year! I can leave the uneaten have of my cheesesteak on the window sill at night to keep it cool, and then put it on the radiator to heat it up in the morning without fear. :) Life is cool.
Roffle 9:37:05 AM
*1/2*
Brian D 9:37:24 AM
Ya Ladle to the Grave and Orb was a great era for BiL. "Sher" is another cool lil instrumental. Ethnic wedding get up and dance while tapping your ankles kinda thing . Shopetski Kopanitsa is a great instr too- 11 or 13 beat count that kopanitsa style/ dance. Cover of Hollies Stop Stop Stop fits right in their wheelhouse (as does their cover of Yardbirds Over Under Sideways Down instr style on earlier lp HEY! clap HEY! clap etc). Ya they're great
joe 9:38:16 AM
This stuff is crazy dave. Love it.
Brian D 9:38:34 AM

Roffle 9:41:09 AM
Windowsill wit sounds like it has to do with the ambitions of clever raccoon.
Brian D 9:44:00 AM
Sorry correction they took their name from the Irish murder ballad "The Twa Sisters" specifically the Clannad version- there's a bit in there about Nordic tradition of casting molten lead into snow as a New Year's ritual for telling the future. So it fits today! And then they did that Man Who Was Boiled in Lead song based on Leyden just to add confusion as it should be in the folk process...
joe 9:45:45 AM
Do you think being boiled in lead is any better or worse than being boiled in anything else?? Like if you had the choice between Lead and like, anything else, would you have a preference?
Brian D 9:45:54 AM
Molybdomancy ! Great metal band name / lp title there! Divination using molten metal (lead or tin). Gotta love them dark ages
joe 9:45:55 AM
