Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:13:50 PM
Patrick, there's always some old Henny Youngman video tapes
Patrick Blanco 12:14:42 PM
I told him not to move to Las Vegas. That desert air killed him. Such a young age
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:16:49 PM
That was good advice. I keep telling my vegetarian friends to stop eating Kale. People just don't lisen!
Rob F 12:17:31 PM
Hi Jerry, this is so good
Brian D 12:17:33 PM
I was just reading the book on City Gardens punk rock venue in Trenton. They booked Henny once! They had to pick him up in NY & drive him down in their beat up car. They went to some dinner before show at a great Italian restaurant in Trenton (Crecco's i think) and first thing Henny did was call his wife to say I love you and let her know he arrived OK.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:18:29 PM
Hi Rob!
Stephen Higgins 12:18:37 PM
Afternoon Jerry, got on just a tad late...but better late than never!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:18:49 PM

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:20:22 PM
Hey Mike, Stephen!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:20:44 PM
This was big at one time!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:22:43 PM
I hope everyone will also enjoy Jerry's Room today, an hour of "jazz-rock", also old like me
Mike Constantine 12:23:24 PM
Looking forward to it
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:25:14 PM
Thanks, Mike, one of your faves will be included, you probably saw
Brian D 12:25:37 PM

Ambrose Hughes (1) 12:25:47 PM
Good afternoon Jerry!

Hi Max S! Ambrose, always happy to see you
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:27:59 PM
Haha, hair of the duck! Love it!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:28:30 PM
You don't read THAT in books
Christine 12:29:12 PM
Happy Friday, Jerry & all!
Max S. 12:30:25 PM
I was just reading about Les mccann- saw he passed recently. When was your recording of him from that you just played?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:30:53 PM
Hi Christine!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:32:01 PM
Max, this track is from 1969, the Les track before that was from 1972
Brian D 12:32:44 PM
Search says Invitation to Openness (the long track was from that lp) was recorded in 1971.
Brian D 12:32:47 PM
https://www.discogs.com/master/92853-Les-McCann-Invitation-To-Openness
Christine 12:32:49 PM
Sounding great. The crowd goes wild! 👏 👏 👏
Brian D 12:33:35 PM
Intro to this reminds me a bit of Age of Aquarius from Hair
Max S. 12:33:37 PM
I mean the recording of him introducing himself
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:34:39 PM
Christine, crowd from Montreux Jazz festival in Switzerland
Brian D 12:34:56 PM
Wonder if they were deliberately quoting that or just a similar few notes. Right at the beginning
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:35:16 PM
Max, his ID he made for Cuckoo was from three years ago when he was promoting his new Christmas album
Christine 12:35:39 PM
Serenade to a Cuckoo, making it real. 💯 That's a warm crowd in Switzerland.
karen swaine 12:35:49 PM
oh yes, i've had this LP for years and harvey just played this cut the other day.. in fact he plays it every now and then. I love it. try to make it real compared to what!!!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:35:49 PM
Brian, I don't recall them, will have to listen later
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:36:20 PM
Right on, Karen, love it!
Brian D 12:39:30 PM
This song (Les' Compared to What) , Pharoah Sanders' "Creator Has a Master Plan", Lee Morgan "Sidewinder" and a long famous Albert Ayler piece are probably my most heard on WPRB jazz tunes. And Marvin Bradshaw's intro piece, Miles Davis "Walkin' " of course
Brian D 12:40:00 PM
And double of course... Serenade to a Cuckoo!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:40:06 PM
Nice! A strong foundation!
Brian D 12:40:29 PM
And I'd like to hear them s 1000x more!
Brian D 12:41:23 PM
Thanks to you, Will C, Marvin B, Dan B and many others
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:41:43 PM
Well I hope you do, Brian, thank you
Christine 12:42:05 PM
There's that theme song 🐦 🎶 Friday afternoon is official.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:43:21 PM
Christine, Brian, just acquired Tired Hands Peanut Butter Stout (and others)
Brian D 12:52:09 PM
They opened a Neshaminy Creek Brewing taproom within walking distance of my place few years back. Been sampling all their new releases as soon as they come out . I gotta get back to the distributor soon to get me some variety going.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:53:04 PM
The walking distance thing sounds very cozy, but yeah, I hear you. Variety is the spice of life
Mike Constantine 12:54:13 PM
The taproom on 313 is a great place to sit on a warm Summer night
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:56:02 PM
Would you guys recognize each other if you were both sitting at the bar?
Russell Woessner 12:56:08 PM
Named for Neptune, NJ. Not the planet.
Brian D 12:56:16 PM
Ya! Played some music there with one of my old band mates in late summer . It was the tap room's 2nd anniversary. Really fun time . Super easy. Bar keep is great
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:56:47 PM
Sounds like a great place to be!
Mike Constantine 12:56:49 PM
I may not recognize myself after a few....
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:57:22 PM
Hahahahahaha
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:57:49 PM
Christine, have you been there?
Patrick White 12:58:22 PM
Marvin Bradshaw all time good guy even though he was a NY Giant fan
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:58:49 PM
Patrick, did you used to call him?
Patrick White 12:59:56 PM
No that wasn’t a thing back then
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:00:33 PM
How about Jeannie?
Russell Woessner 1:03:51 PM
I remember that the Visitors played at the Waterworks behind the Art Museum for the Jazz Society of Philadelphia. I felt the spirit of Coltrane at that concert. The building levitated!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:04:29 PM
Hi Russ! I bet! When was that?
Russell Woessner 1:05:58 PM
Back in the 1970’s, before Earl died and Carl moved to Baltimore.
Christine 1:09:32 PM
@Jerry, yep I have been to Neshaminy Creek Brewing several times. Nice local place. I just heard that they are expanding; they're opening a taproom in Harleysville. They must be doing well.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:10:59 PM
Russ is also a beer connoisseur...especially for stouts. Russ, you been there?
Russell Woessner 1:14:38 PM
Nope. So much beer, so little time!
Russell Woessner 1:18:07 PM
I met the Grubbs brothers when they did a live studio concert for 88.9 around the same time. Carl was a soft spoken, nice guy.
Russell Woessner 1:18:39 PM
Jerry, did you know them from 3rd Street?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:19:13 PM
No Russ, I don't recall them coming in!
Patrick White 1:20:01 PM
Hey Russ I remember Art museum used to have some great Friday Jazz shows. Free with the admission
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:23:07 PM
Jazz in front of the marble stairs and Abe Lincoln
Ossy 1:25:16 PM
Afternoon
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:25:43 PM
Hey Ossy, how ya doin'?
Russell Woessner 1:26:49 PM
Yes, the Art Museum had some good concerts over the years. The last concert that I saw before the pandemic shutdown was trumpeter Dave Douglas with pianist Marilyn Crispell at the Art Museum. At the bottom of the stairway in front of the statue of Diana (not Abe Lincoln). Jerry is in the wrong city!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:27:37 PM
Diana?! Not Abe Lincoln? Wut?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:28:01 PM
I'm talkin' inside
Patrick White 1:28:05 PM
Jerry like Uncle Leo often gets confused
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:28:30 PM
Hahahaha. Yeah, that's me!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:28:59 PM
Ossy, did you know that song "Compared to What"?
Russell Woessner 1:29:26 PM
Yeah, inside the museum. The statue outside the museum is some other palooka!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:30:11 PM
Oh, Joe Frazier!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:31:09 PM
Maybe Uncle Leo thinks he's in Chicago at the Art Institute
Russell Woessner 1:33:20 PM
An obit for Carl: https://jazzbluesnews.com/2024/01/11/carl-grubbs-a-powerfully-searching-saxophonist-whose-grassroots-influence-extends-from-philadelphia-to-baltimore-dies-at-79/
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:34:47 PM
Thank you! I couldn't find a good one, and not one from the Inky etc.
Christine 1:40:00 PM
I love that statue of Diana on the grand staircase inside the Art Museum.
Ambrose Hughes (1) 1:42:35 PM
Uh oh!
Christine 1:42:53 PM

Russell Woessner 1:49:12 PM
While we are waiting for Jerry to return, another Carl Grubbs factoid: He owned and played an alto saxophone that belonged to Eric Dolphy!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:49:31 PM
Are we back folks?
Brian D 1:49:44 PM
Of memorial barbecue fame
Russell Woessner 1:50:18 PM
Nope, Jerry. Still funkin’

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:10:36 PM
Very "harmonious"
Patrick White 2:10:40 PM
Does John Tesh qualify as jazz rock ?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:10:53 PM
I hear alot of Al Jardine!
David Shortell 2:11:04 PM
Was that Charles Lloyd song title Mike Love’s idea? He’s the the Beach Boy who vacationed at the Rinkisink ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1968 (with Donovan, the Beatles, the Farrows, etc).
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:11:35 PM
Again with the humor, Patrick!

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:14:36 PM
This song defines NYC and early East Coast hippiedom
David Shortell 2:14:42 PM
I saw the Blues Project perform this at the Bottom Line in the 90's.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:14:55 PM
Nice, David
Mike Constantine 2:15:00 PM
It does
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:15:54 PM
Take Five inspired, it appears. Bruce? David?
Patrick White 2:19:00 PM
