An Anthology of North Indian Classical Music vol. III UNESCO 1975

This is another example of rare instruments in Indian Classical Music that I did not have time to present last November. This recording was issued in 1975 but probably recorded much earlier. It features Manfred Junius on the surbahar (a larger, deeper version of the sitar), and Sulalit Sinha on the surashringar (similar to the sarod, but larger). I was not able to find a decent photo of Sulalit Sinha.

Primary

Uppalapu Srinivas (28 February 1969 – 19 September 2014) was a mandolin player in Carnatic classical music and composer. Because he was a child prodigy, he was sometimes called the Mozart of classical Indian music. Rudraraju Subbaraju (disciple of Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar) taught U. Srinivas by singing, and U. Srinivas developed his phenomenal style of playing entirely his own, since mandolin had never been played in the rigorous and difficult Carnatic style before.

Srinivas started out on the acoustic mandolin, but neither the size nor plucking required of the acoustic mandolin was suited for long, sustained notes. He then switched to the electric mandolin.

Good morning, and welcome to Sangeet. Dave here this morning until noon
Rob from Merryland 🦅 9:05:27 AM
Hi Dave! We're going to try to listen in my wife's modern car as we make a grocery run before the snow or rain starts!
Sangeet Team (host) 9:05:48 AM
okay. be safe out there
Cool Peacock 9:58:03 AM
Good morning Dave!
Matt Sabbath 10:00:47 AM

and good morning, Matt Sabbath
Sangeet Team (host) 10:03:11 AM
i'm glad you are able to enjoy this music
Cool Peacock 10:08:31 AM
Dave you're a machine and I am thankful to have had so many opportunities to listen to you curate music lately.
Rob from Merryland 🦅 10:08:51 AM
We survived. Very light snow. And Indian classical music :-)
Cool Peacock 10:09:11 AM
I think it will be rain here.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:09:55 AM
Thanks for the positive feedback, Joe M. It's the only reward we volunteers get
Sangeet Team (host) 10:11:11 AM
Good to hear about the weather, Rob from MD. We are an hour or so behind you up here, and can expect the same
Sangeet Team (host) 10:11:39 AM
maybe some "wint'ry mix"
Cool Peacock 10:16:12 AM
I am going to try and make vegan chocolate chip cookies now.
Rob from Merryland 🦅 10:16:19 AM
We'll probably have a wint'ry mix too.
Rob from Merryland 🦅 10:16:44 AM
... mmm, chocolate chip cookies ...
Sangeet Team (host) 10:16:44 AM
sounds good, Joe M. A perfect winter weather activity
Cool Peacock 10:17:40 AM
Yeah! get the house warm. I am notorious for messing up cookies but you never know if you don't try!
Rob from Merryland 🦅 10:17:54 AM
and good morning, Joe and Matt
Cool Peacock 10:19:03 AM
Morning Rob
Cool Peacock 10:19:27 AM
I just recently learned how to change your name in the chat (i thought i had to change me gmail name!) and am trying to think of a good nick name.
Cool Peacock 10:20:43 AM
I saw some "difficult" music this week. Went to Solar Myth which is part of the Ars Nova workshop in philly!
Cool Peacock 10:22:02 AM
my second time at the rebranded spot. And I love the programming, just wish it wasn't so pricey. But I also want the artists paid well and the place to exist so...
Cool Peacock 10:22:12 AM
The age old dilemma.
Rob from Merryland 🦅 11:08:37 AM
It is snowing in Merryland. Currently melting though, not sticking
Cool Peacock 11:09:17 AM
Are you pro- or anti- snow?
Cool Peacock 11:09:50 AM
or do you have a more nuanced third opinion on snow?
Sangeet Team (host) 11:10:07 AM
The radar shows some snow in Philadelphia as well. Princeton and most of NJ is an hour or so behind
Sangeet Team (host) 11:11:06 AM
I like snow, unless I have to shovel it or drive on it, which is pretty much 100% of the time
Cool Peacock 11:12:58 AM
Yeah. It is ultimately a pain in the butt. But I'd be down for one big snow storm. It feels like its been a while.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:13:31 AM
You realize what that can do to WPRB's ability to broadcast?
Sangeet Team (host) 11:14:04 AM
Most community DJs would be unable to reach the barge
Cool Peacock 11:14:50 AM
Oh wow no I hadn't considered.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:15:40 AM
Live remote broadcasting is possible for some, but not all
Cool Peacock 11:15:43 AM
Well, I suppose I am considering factors more than just WRPB here, but that's a good point.
Cool Peacock 11:18:10 AM
I take care of plants in Center City for work, so any kind of precipitation makes for a lighter work week kinda.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:19:03 AM
True. I forget sometimes that there is a world beyond WPRB
Rob from Merryland 🦅 11:20:24 AM
Joe, I'm pro snow in the tiny amount that has fallen so far. I'm anti snow if the DC area gets 12 inches: things are shut down, I can't go anywhere, and I have to shovel it off my sidewalk
Cool Peacock 11:22:51 AM
There's one specific thing, when it snows a lot and kind of heavy, and things are shut down, and cars aren't on the roadway, and very late at night you can HEAR the sound of thousands of tiny snowflakes falling and hitting the ground. That is pretty cool.
Cool Peacock 11:23:32 AM
But for the most part, I dislike big snows too.
Matt Sabbath 11:25:04 AM
I like bbqing out in the snow. Makin ribs today.
Cool Peacock 11:26:34 AM
Would you be making ribs if it weren't snowing? Is it like a snow specific activity?? That rules.
Matt Sabbath 11:27:50 AM
Been doing it since I lived in Georgia. Cold As F❄️ck BBQ Club. Open to all! 🥩🔥
Cool Peacock 11:28:23 AM
You're maybe convincing me here Matt.
Matt Sabbath 11:28:57 AM
Lolz it is fun. I also like solar cooking in summa.
Cool Peacock 11:28:58 AM
I finally bought a grill and then promptly stop eating meat haha so I will maybe fire it up and throw on some veggies.
Matt Sabbath 11:29:22 AM
Do it! 🌽🍠🥔
Rob from Merryland 🦅 11:33:21 AM
Snow veggies!
Matt Sabbath 11:34:59 AM
Soak some eggplant and corn in oil and grillemup!
karen swaine 11:35:19 AM
Hi dave, we listen every saturday, but gotta say that it's wonderful to hear the more "unusual" Indian music you play -- this morning especially liked the mandolin piece; . what a shame thaty talented player died so young. Here's to the music and to peace (if only it were possible) in 2024.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:36:44 AM
Hello Karen, good to hear from you again. I wish you all a peaceful 2024
Cool Peacock 11:39:50 AM
Cookies are in the oven.
Cool Peacock 11:41:18 AM
ten minutes until I find out if I blew it or nailed it!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:43:55 AM
making me hungry 🍪
karen swaine 11:44:02 AM
when i heard the deep tones of that surbahar earlier in the show, it brought back memories of the performance by Imrat Khan in Amsterdam in the 70s. it was in an amsterdam church that became a music venue.. i may have been stoned.. but i was an isntant surbahar fan and have several CDs of his... also saw him play with both his sons at some point.. here in nyc or maybe in NL, not sure... time is playing havoc with my memory.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:45:00 AM
Oh yes, I have seen Imrat Khan several times in NJ. He is one of the few that assured the survival of the instrument
karen swaine 11:46:21 AM
oh this drummer!!!!!
karen swaine 11:48:32 AM
food for thought: (re the grill) grilled eggplant. grilled onions. grilled asparagus. grilled zucchini. roast potatos in the coals of the grill. Grilled slices of cauliflower. grilled bread. mmmm
Cool Peacock 11:49:30 AM
Yumm
Rob from Merryland 🦅 11:59:30 AM
We had a great morning listening to this show, Dave!
