I first remember it coming to WPRB on a WFMU comp of great moments in radio in like 2003

It can also be heard briefly coming through a radio in the movie Cat People!

A radio personality known as "The Black Pope". New Orleans and maybe other stations down south?

Searching the phrase "I am a human radio station" just like that WITH the quote marks around it gets a link to a book titled Heaven Before I Die: A Journey to the Heart of New Orleans By Michael Oliver-Goodwin. Looks like that famous broadcast text is transcribed there.

I found an hour+ air check from one of his shows but I'll have to save that for after your show...

What show was it... maybe the Rockabilly guys show back 20 years ago or.. Professor Matt Rhythm of the One FUNK show maybe... where they would play the long "medley" of Blaxploitation film radio advertisements. Fun radio moments. I file Black Pope's self pronouncement in that folder somewhat. Similar vibe as the movie adverts

Someone asked Steve Albini on the socials what 80s album he wished he had recorded. After a second's faux-hesitation, he said this one.

Aren't there a bunch of ZZ Top records where they re-did / electro-fied the drums and those are the versions everyone knows?

Give me all the ZZ Top records but with Todd Trainer re-recording the drum parts!

I would not say those are the versions that everyone knows, no. That was a failed box set. Then they went back to the good ol mixes

"Before 1987, ZZ Top's first 7 albums were not released on the CD format. So, in 1987, to capitalize on the success of the synth and drum machine laden sound of Eliminator and Afterburner, Warner Bros Records convinced the band to go back into the studio and remix the back catalog for a 3-disc compilation of six albums, entitled "Six Pack.""

The idea was to capitalize on the Eliminator onward sound and re release the 70s catalog with the pyong pish pishhhh electro drum sound and it did not work. Then the good ol mixes were made available again on subsequent repressings/reissues from what I remember

Similar to a person that was in Black Sabbath and their married person who erased the bass and drum parts on the old albums because they had a spat with the old rhythm section guys. Then... re-released the good ol versions ! CLASSIC COKE!

Not sure I realized there was a ZZ Top song called "Dust My Broom."

TV Dinners! I even like the chicken if the sauce is not too blue.

The story behind the song "Master of Sparks" was a fun read. Something about riding a tire-less vehicle at high speeds in the desert at night. Rims lighting up the pavement like fireworks.

I could not tell where the last track ended and the new one began. Very nice.

Oh it was even better than I remembered the Master of Sparks story... not a vehicle sans tires. But a human pinball steel cage ejected onto the road....

The song tells the true story[1] of Billy Gibbons and his friend R.K. Bullock who with a workman, welded together a steel ball cage with a seat and seatbelt fitted inside. They placed the cage into the bed of a truck and at night, after reaching a speed of 60 miles per hour (97 km/h), on Highway 6 near Houston (also known as Jack Rabbit Road), rolled the cage out the back with the hapless narrator and friend taking a ride inside. The cage generated a tail of sparks on the road but in its crushed

...condition stopped rolling. Still moving at high speed, the now egg shaped cage crashed into a fence. Both occupants survived relatively unscathed and were awarded the title "Master of Sparks" by the cheering crowd.

Sounds like something out of a Mad Max movie

I have been binging Gabor lately. Most of those 60s 70s lps are a lot o fun. Often binge the related Gabor-Chico Hamilton-Charles Lloyd etc family of musicians. Lots of great cross pollinizations

I know grinderman is a little crazy to play on the radio. But...nick the stripper! Man, a classic. What if someone begged for it?

It's funny, most Birthday Party tracks are actually pretty FCC ok, if memory serves. It's just in Grinderman where Nick Cave is horny as hell all the time

Which is to say that I think I can probably fit in Nick the Stripper before the evening is done

Nick the stripper was a very influential track for me. The music video influenced much of my work to this day.
