Psyched to listen, also this new Arcwelder is a good as everyone said it is!
Brian D 5:02:24 PM
Could count the times this happened on 8 hands
Dan Ruccia (host) 5:02:40 PM
Psyched that your psyched! Also psyched to be on the radio in this here radio slot!
Dan Ruccia (host) 5:03:56 PM
8 hands times 4572 suction cups per hands equals today's date, right?
TAndy 5:04:17 PM
Ohi. I'm waveing all 8 hands toward the general direction of the barge right now
Rob from Maryland 5:05:38 PM
Hello Dan and everyone. This new Arcwelder was great!
Brian D 5:06:16 PM
And... and... "not being too chic to be bereft "
DSM 5:07:16 PM
Sooo no human radio station...but octopus radio station! Howdy Dan
Dan Ruccia (host) 5:09:47 PM
I AM A CEPHALOPOD RADIO STATION AND I"M NOT GOING TO TELL YOU AGAIN
Carlos Ramone. 5:10:33 PM
@DSM. Where is the human radio station segment from? Always very happy to hear it
Dan Ruccia (host) 5:11:25 PM
I first remember it coming to WPRB on a WFMU comp of great moments in radio in like 2003
TAndy 5:11:46 PM
The Kraken has taken over the Barge. I repeat. The Kraken has taken over the Barge.
DSM 5:16:54 PM
@Carlos, I've only ever known it from Jon's show. Not sure the origins...
Jon Solomon 5:18:11 PM
It can also be heard briefly coming through a radio in the movie Cat People!
Brian D 5:24:56 PM
A radio personality known as "The Black Pope". New Orleans and maybe other stations down south?
Brian D 5:27:51 PM
Searching the phrase "I am a human radio station" just like that WITH the quote marks around it gets a link to a book titled Heaven Before I Die: A Journey to the Heart of New Orleans By Michael Oliver-Goodwin. Looks like that famous broadcast text is transcribed there.
Carlos Ramone. 5:28:37 PM
@ Brian..SIRI knows it all

That second photo!
Dan Ruccia (host) 5:30:24 PM
He really is the transmitter, the antenna, etc
Jon Solomon 5:31:09 PM
I found an hour+ air check from one of his shows but I'll have to save that for after your show...
Brian D 5:32:21 PM
What show was it... maybe the Rockabilly guys show back 20 years ago or.. Professor Matt Rhythm of the One FUNK show maybe... where they would play the long "medley" of Blaxploitation film radio advertisements. Fun radio moments. I file Black Pope's self pronouncement in that folder somewhat. Similar vibe as the movie adverts
Carlos Ramone. 5:33:15 PM
From the voice i had always pictured a younger person…sometimes I am disappointed when I see what a person 9n the radio looks like
Brian D 5:33:27 PM
Great delivery, great camp yet confidence.
Jon Solomon 5:33:30 PM
Sounds like Matt, who I emailed with a couple days ago. All is well with him up north.
Brian D 5:38:09 PM
Tuned into Matt's Rhythm of the One funk show every week. Always a pleasure that
Brian D 5:39:49 PM
"It's a record. It's round..."
Brian D 5:45:29 PM
ZED ZED TOP! That bottom end they got on these recordings. Lil ol band
Jon Solomon 5:46:07 PM
If that's not the best Hellripper -> ZZ Top segue I hear today, I don't know what will be.
Brian D 5:46:08 PM
And that phased vocal or whatever that is. Total riding the school bus song here for me
Carlos Ramone. 5:47:02 PM
I was blown away by FANDANGO..live on one side..studio on the other
Dan Ruccia (host) 5:47:48 PM
Someone asked Steve Albini on the socials what 80s album he wished he had recorded. After a second's faux-hesitation, he said this one.
Jon Solomon 5:48:49 PM
Aren't there a bunch of ZZ Top records where they re-did / electro-fied the drums and those are the versions everyone knows?
Jon Solomon 5:49:04 PM
Give me all the ZZ Top records but with Todd Trainer re-recording the drum parts!
Brian D 5:49:23 PM
I would not say those are the versions that everyone knows, no. That was a failed box set. Then they went back to the good ol mixes
Jon Solomon 5:50:17 PM
"Before 1987, ZZ Top's first 7 albums were not released on the CD format. So, in 1987, to capitalize on the success of the synth and drum machine laden sound of Eliminator and Afterburner, Warner Bros Records convinced the band to go back into the studio and remix the back catalog for a 3-disc compilation of six albums, entitled "Six Pack.""
Brian D 5:50:43 PM
The idea was to capitalize on the Eliminator onward sound and re release the 70s catalog with the pyong pish pishhhh electro drum sound and it did not work. Then the good ol mixes were made available again on subsequent repressings/reissues from what I remember
Jon Solomon 5:51:12 PM
Someone put all the originals up here too...
Jon Solomon 5:51:14 PM
http://deege.free.fr/zztop/
Brian D 5:52:50 PM
Similar to a person that was in Black Sabbath and their married person who erased the bass and drum parts on the old albums because they had a spat with the old rhythm section guys. Then... re-released the good ol versions ! CLASSIC COKE!
Jon Solomon 5:53:42 PM
Not sure I realized there was a ZZ Top song called "Dust My Broom."
Brian D 5:53:47 PM
*Erased the drum and bass parts and had new musicians come in and overdub new parts - that is
Brian D 5:54:08 PM
TV Dinners! I even like the chicken if the sauce is not too blue.
Brian D 5:55:32 PM
The story behind the song "Master of Sparks" was a fun read. Something about riding a tire-less vehicle at high speeds in the desert at night. Rims lighting up the pavement like fireworks.
Jon Solomon 6:00:31 PM
I could not tell where the last track ended and the new one began. Very nice.
Brian D 6:03:36 PM
Oh it was even better than I remembered the Master of Sparks story... not a vehicle sans tires. But a human pinball steel cage ejected onto the road....
Brian D 6:03:38 PM
The song tells the true story[1] of Billy Gibbons and his friend R.K. Bullock who with a workman, welded together a steel ball cage with a seat and seatbelt fitted inside. They placed the cage into the bed of a truck and at night, after reaching a speed of 60 miles per hour (97 km/h), on Highway 6 near Houston (also known as Jack Rabbit Road), rolled the cage out the back with the hapless narrator and friend taking a ride inside. The cage generated a tail of sparks on the road but in its crushed
Brian D 6:04:04 PM
...condition stopped rolling. Still moving at high speed, the now egg shaped cage crashed into a fence. Both occupants survived relatively unscathed and were awarded the title "Master of Sparks" by the cheering crowd.
Dan Ruccia (host) 6:04:22 PM
Sounds like something out of a Mad Max movie
Brian D 6:04:37 PM
It's pranks like that where all make it out high fiving and ok.
Jon Solomon 6:08:11 PM
Bouncing to family dinner but we'll be listening. Thanks for a great show, Dan!
Dan Ruccia (host) 6:08:41 PM
Enjoy dinner, Jon!
Dan Ruccia (host) 6:11:43 PM
I was watching the first episode of season 2 of Our Flag Means Death and I was totally floored when this song started playing
Brian D 6:13:42 PM
Loving the whole eve but last half hour or so espesh
Kai 6:24:39 PM
play mizrab by gabor szabo i heard on the radio while driving through fog and it was eart
Kai 6:25:03 PM
earth-shattering lol*
Dan Ruccia (host) 6:27:09 PM
I'll see if I can track it down, Kai!
Brian D 6:30:18 PM
I have been binging Gabor lately. Most of those 60s 70s lps are a lot o fun. Often binge the related Gabor-Chico Hamilton-Charles Lloyd etc family of musicians. Lots of great cross pollinizations
Dan Ruccia (host) 6:43:27 PM
Hope this is the right version, Kai! I guess Szabo recorded this song a bunch of different times
Kai 6:46:06 PM
yesss it is now hearing it again its kinda gothic i love it so much
Dan Ruccia (host) 6:50:55 PM
[Stomps on pedal named "My Bloody Valentine fuzz"]
Matthew Robinson 6:55:14 PM
nice song Dan! Great show tonight :) Good evening everyone!
Dan Ruccia (host) 6:55:47 PM
Hi Matthew! Welcome!
Alessandro Medici 7:19:58 PM
Shioiit
Alessandro Medici 7:21:16 PM
I know grinderman is a little crazy to play on the radio. But...nick the stripper! Man, a classic. What if someone begged for it?
Dan Ruccia (host) 7:24:02 PM
It's funny, most Birthday Party tracks are actually pretty FCC ok, if memory serves. It's just in Grinderman where Nick Cave is horny as hell all the time
Dan Ruccia (host) 7:26:49 PM
Which is to say that I think I can probably fit in Nick the Stripper before the evening is done
Alessandro Medici 7:27:35 PM
Ha! What a project that was.
Alessandro Medici 7:28:08 PM
Nick the stripper was a very influential track for me. The music video influenced much of my work to this day.
Kristin Belz 7:28:14 PM
whoah this is Rosali? so sludgy! i love her "solo" stuff but this is great too.
Alessandro Medici 7:28:31 PM
(If you havent seen it, watch it...worth a listen)
Alessandro Medici 7:28:47 PM
Also...great show, man!
Kristin Belz 7:29:35 PM
oh so it's her plus Jason Gerycz of cloud nothings. thanks for playing.
Dan Ruccia (host) 7:29:59 PM
Kristin: Yeah! I love when she goes into full guitar hero mode. Have you heard her band Long Hots?
Kristin Belz 7:36:15 PM
@dan no i haven't hear that band. she's touring now and i'll see her this month in portland - don't know who she's touring with - a band?
Rob from Maryland 7:38:55 PM
My wife is quite happy to hear this Birthday Party song! Thank you, Dan! And hello everyone!
Dan Ruccia (host) 7:39:33 PM
Oh cool! I've been really bummed to miss like all the shows she's played around Durham over the past few months. Looks like she's gonna be backed up by the Rose City Band in Portland. No idea who she's touring with, though. Should be a great show!
Dan Ruccia (host) 7:40:04 PM
Happy to oblige, Rob and Alessandro!
Alessandro Medici 7:40:45 PM
This is so rad. I love to hear this on the air waves...thank you!
Alessandro Medici 7:41:25 PM
Also, kudos on the Ken Nordine transition a few songs ago. Super rad.
goshupon 7:44:58 PM
yo wassup just tuned in. boutta make some dinner to the playlist so lets get ~infused~
Dan Ruccia (host) 7:45:47 PM
Hey goshupon! You're timing is perfect: I'm playing a song from a comp of music for cooking
TAndy 7:46:18 PM
Yo Dan, great show tonight and always great to hear you back on the air. Thank you so much for the varied playlist tonight, take it easy!
Dan Ruccia (host) 7:46:36 PM
Thanks, Alessandro. I do enjoy that wild Ken Nordine flexi infomercial thing
Dan Ruccia (host) 7:47:07 PM
Hey TAndy! It's always nice to pop in randomly! I'll be back filling in for Jon on January 3!
goshupon 7:47:23 PM
and that right there is why wprb is ALWAYS the right choice
Dan Ruccia (host) 7:59:09 PM
Thanks for listening and chatting, y'all!
